Like you Chris, the Hotel Cafe version was my favorite. The more I listen to this jazz version, the more I like it. It is currently #9 on iTunes jazz top 100.
Hands down this is the best version of this song & it's not even close. This is ready made for a movie sound track, IMO. Stunningly beautiful from the Queen of Jazz.
Chris, I think this version sounds like it's from a 1950's jazz club, and the record should be on a 78rpm shellac disc. (That's the highest compliment, in my opinion). Angelina has raised the bar so high I don't think anyone else will beat it.

OK, I'm 100% sure that this is the killer arrangement and version of this song. The others are good to superb, but this one is just exceptional. What is needed now is some serious investment into a great video which also tells the story of the song; and the planning of an international tour. This could be the breakthrough for Angelina, because it should win over any jazz lovers who have yet to learn about her, and because it is so unlike anything in today's charts that it SHINES like a beacon. We need to start requesting this on the radio.
By the time I watched your reaction here, I've listened to this jazzy version about 132 times. It is the best version for me. She is about to go really big. Her career in 2024 has gone in only one direction. Up.

This is simply an incredible performance. When I first heard AJs interpretation of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" I was blown away. I was in tears... What's she going to be like in 10 years? Now we know... I'm so glad to see her go back to her roots. I know, for her career, she has to pursue pop. But, this is where she belongs. This is so good on so many levels... She's one of a kind.👣👣💕
Chris, whenever you hear raves about an Angelina song you know going in it's going to be fantastic. And that's exactly what this was. If she was already popularized as a top vocal superstar this song would immediately go to the top of the charts! Hopefully this vocal masterpiece by Angelina will receive the recognition it truly deserves. And, at the same time Angelina will receive the attention of all those who haven't discovered her yet.

Wonderful reaction Chris, I'm perfectly in tune with your emotions, every time I listen to it I get emotional again. She literally left me breathless, I love Angie and I am more and more in awe of her unstoppable musical evolution, I would never have expected that at her age she had already reached such a stratospheric level of vocal perfection. What she creates in that indescribable jazz version is absolutely astonishing, even for the apparent ease with which she does it, in fact the instrumental accompaniment is little more than a simple pleasant decoration, her voice alone is enough to reproduce the emotional effect of an entire orchestra. What an extraordinary artist she is becoming, I understand well why Toby is enraptured by her talent, being able to collaborate with a singer like her leaves a boundless space to the imagination, you probably can't even think of what vocal wonders she can achieve. Currently, this version of Bad Valentine on Piano Diaries Is tracking at number 9 on iTunes top 100 jazz tunes! Lady Gaga and Frank Sinatra along with Louis Armstrong encompass the top seven or eight. Without them, Angelina is in the top top position! As it is, she is living with the legends.
This arrangement is much harmonically richer than the original (and even with some big differences) and AJ has more room to be herself = an exceptional jazz singer !!!
not only does she re-imagine classic and hit songs into her own style, she even re-imagines her own songs into something completely new and refreshing.
Her absolute best song by far in my humble opinion. The world needs an entire album full of songs re-imagined in this jazz style. multi-platinum, grammy-award-winning guaranteed.

I remember how surprised I was when I first heard this lovely lady sing. It happened again when i heared this latest 'jazzy' version of "Bad Valentine". Everything we love about Angelina comes out in this beautiful and, I suspect, final version of Bad Valentine. I loved every version, especially that first introduction in the LA cafe with Toby. But they kept changing it up with each new venue. And they were ALL wonderful with subtle differences. Unril now. No more subtleties, we now have a "jazzy" version. Here she seems to be paying homage to those wonderful jazz singers from the past, and in the process showing off all those gorgeous colors in her magical voice and resulting tweaks to the melody which you hear from the piano. You're just mesmerized by how crazy good this rendition is. I loved it. But as you say, Main street, maybe not so much...not yet, anyway.
This reminds me of the style she displayed on My Funny Valentine 16, but even at a higher level now 2 years later. My Funny Valentine 16 was my favourite performance by her ever now it's this one for sure. This is really a masterpiece vocal display.
Hello Chris. This is beyond brilliant. This is highest-level vocal genius. I understand your concern about the heavy jazzy feel with regard to its potential for mainstream popularity but, perhaps somewhat paradoxically, every review and every comment I've seen so far has been extremely positive. I, like maybe a large proportion of the average listeners, am not particularly a jazz specialist or aficionado, and yet I was completely blown away by this version, as has EVERYONE that I've seen comment on it, and I have yet to come across anyone who did not agree that this is the very best version yet of this amazing song.
This performance is just stunning. Not only the smoky sultry jazzed up rendition, but she manages to take one of her own songs and really shift the emotions being conveyed. In the first 3 it was more about being strong and explaining why the other person just doesn't measure up and deserve her love. Here, it's such a different feeling - this could be Sad Valentine, I think much more about self-doubt and remorse for what she has done. A-Aron does get into how she does this musically. And agree with you - she's a genius, and her collaboration with Toby is showing signs of being a match made in heaven ... I hope it is long-lived. Who knows what additional brilliance is going to come out of it.
Great points Steve. With that first listen I was more focused on the jazz techniques themselves but with further listenings I’m seeing that there is also that other level of how she uses those techniques to change the message and mood of the song so much. A big part of her genius is how her singing is all in service of the song, making the song the best it can be. She takes so many just average songs and makes them great. And of course this song is great to begin with!
Lol! I would have been surprised if you had been able to wait for a full video. This is so good! It hits so differently than the others. Sultry, jazzy, cool, and so many other adjectives (the same problem with all of AJ's performances- not enough descriptive words). She is flying high!!
To me she changed the entire feel and intent of the song. The earlier versions sounded like a "bad girl" attitude. This one sounds like a sad girl, remorseful, sorrowful. What a change. What an amazing artist she continually shows us she is.

Note that Toby released this on His KITE label. He’d said they’d recorded 6-8 songs but her label haded released any of them. Earlier I’d seen this Jazzy version was #11 on iTunes and #8 on Spotify. Those are the kind of numbers the radio stations et al. Look at.

Robert, there’s some logic as to why she would come to Pittsburgh, say at the Stage AE? 2400 seats inside. Pittsburgh is centrally located from a lot of cities, Chicago, Cinn, Cleve, phila, nyc, Baltimore, D.C. Canada, etc. 🤞

My favorite version will be when she performs this with the piano and an orchestration of strings behind her during the grammies! Hardly anyonebody on my algo have reacted to this. TEE, THE european guy that I cant remember is name right now and Shakes. So far nobody else. Possibly because you have to dig on her channel to find it, idk. When I heard this a couple of days ago I was so shocked I had to play it over and over many times. I could not really get my mind around it because the previous versions had set my expectations. This is so far beyond what I could have imagined it was like my concept of reality seemed to shift and leave me looking for something to grab onto. Your comments about the marketability of this version may be right, because the world's not fair and I can accept that. But, not really. It's REALLY not fair. After watching your reaction I had to return to the source and play it about 5 times, all the way through. That happens whenever I see a reaction (like Pontus' reaction) to it. I can't get enough. She's passed through into another dimension and dragged me into a world I don't recognize. I really love it, though.
