Back in 2014 this little 7 year old girl first struck a world dumb with a talent that most said was God given. She became known by many as "The Barefoot Princes of Music". Throughout her years growing up we all where mesmerized by this little girl with the Old sole and the voice and stile of Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday. By age 12 we all knew she was destined to greatness and many in the Music industry where reacting either by vying to sign her or hoping to silence her. Cover after cover she brought back hits that the music industry either could not duplicate or match and she did it with her own style and not only matched them but made them better in a way that was humble and showed respect to those that she copied. Every one was whispering and wondering what would happen when she got older, could she wright her own stuff and could she sing fresh material or was she just a mimic. Most of her fans knew the answers to those and we have waited. Any one that sings as she does from a place of Joy in the art, respect for those who she has learned from and real Happiness in her ability to make others feel happy was destine to greatness. Her secret weapon was faith in her self, her craft and her family. She never thought about the money only making beautiful music. Now here we are, She steps out on the stage still barefoot, still the pretty young girl we all love but she has her own voice now, her own words that she has begin to express at the age of just 15. With them she has gone from the Bare foot Princes Growing in to the confidant caring and thoughtful Queen of her profession. How can that title be hers, She embodies all the best qualities of those she benefitted from, Heart, strength of commitment, and character. A real love of her talent and her art that is not driven by greed but of the pure desire to do what she loves and in a way that embodies all the best traits of her idols and mentors. To this I can only add, Long Live the Queen.
I've fallen in love two singers in the past 2 yrs or so with completely different skill sets......Angelina and Tatiana of Jinjer. They bring a smile to my face and few tears as well. I always follow excellence when I see it !
What is it that makes Angelina so special? It's almost mystical. But what I am able to recognize is that she allows herself to be vulnerable and resonant the melancholy in the lyrics. So when she is delivering a "sad" song, she seems truly sad herself. I know she is living a very happy life, but somehow she is able to go to that "sad" place while performing. I've seen her do it over and over. Then she flashes that charming smile and waves goodbye. Leaving many of us with tears in our eyes. Of course, with a song like this that she wrote with a very real purpose, the sadness comes from actually experiencing the lyrics. As she said after recording the first lyric video, very real tears were running down her cheeks while she was in the recording booth singing. Even when I attempt to explain how she makes us feel so deeply, for the most part she remains an enigma. That's the mystical part of Angelina. Like you, I have tried to understand what it is about her that makes her so unique, and I agree with everything you said. She has a true artist's sensibility. Another factor I believe is that she has the ability to absorb and accurately produce subtle vocal nuances from the voices of great artists like Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and many others. This might be related to the very early start she got. The other thing is that she is totally fearless when performing. There's no sign of nervousness or inhibitions.
The simple answer to your first question is "Because it is Angelina" and I realise that that sounds trite, but it is what I truly believe. Angelina does not just sing the emotions because that is what the lyrics suggest, she "lives" the emotions as if she has experienced the event, regardless of whether she has done so or not.
I sit reading the lyrics to the song and then listen to her sing those lyrics with the passion and emotion the songwriter was aiming for and it passes right into your soul. Very few songs, FreeBird and After the Loving are two for me, really hit you deep inside to wear you actually share that emotion, but with Angelina it’s every song. So amazing it’s beyond words. I love your reactions, you can see mine are the same. With our age difference it pleases me to see that so many young people love Angelina’s singing as much as I.
I have never heard a singer who connects so immediately with her listeners. You’re hooked from the first line because of the authenticity of the emotion and Angelina’s immersion in the lyrics. Add in that magical voice-and she is the best singer I’ve ever heard. Truly once in a lifetime.
You pointed out something that I think puts Angelina on her very own level.... Not only does she have an incredible voice, and a deep understanding and connection to the song, but the most amazing thing for me is that she is able to do it Every. Single. Time. She never misses. No matter what song, no matter what genre, she will pull you in and hold you captive for the duration of the song. I can think of no other artist that I have ever heard that can achieve that level of excellence as consistently as Angelina Jordan does it.

I love when she has only one or two instruments in the background so that her voice shines through. But of course she can hold her own with full brass or orchestra too. True versatility!!!

Great review, and if my mom was still alive, she would have loved this amazing young lady. My mom was a famous singer in the Big Band Era from the mid 1940’s thru the early 50’s, and my appreciation for quality singers has always been near and dear to me. Angelina is a once in a century singer, and may she be blessed for a long time.

Yes, I agree with those who say that she has a rare gift when it comes to the connection with her listeners. Yet, she is hardly played anywhere. Not on radio, not on TV, never being promoted anywhere, except for a few articles here and there, and some input on her own website. The marketing of this young artist is close to catastrophic, to be honest. It is almost as though the industry wants to keep her a secret. Unbelievable.
I had understood Republic Records was going to do a world wide promotion for her upcoming album. Let's give them that chance and IF they fail then us angels WILL be devastated. I am hoping her album is released before the Grammy's on March 14th so there will be a lot of buzz about our barefoot angel.
@@andyschnell58 Oh, I will certainly give them a chance, but I mean seriously... Not even her native Norway give her the time of day, honestly! But, we should remember that one of the biggest metal bands ever had the same problem. They were almost never promoted anywhere, yet they grew to become what they are: Iron Maiden. So I will wait patiently, but not with satisfaction.

I am happy to see that one of Norway's biggest newspapers write about her today. She is giving an interview where she talks about the hard times she is currently going through, and the notion that the bigger artist you become, the more lonely you often tend to feel. (Just look at Freddie Mercury... "I get so lonely, living on my own".) I encourage the fans to keep supporting her with all things good! Keep promoting her, and introducing her to others, and make her grow! She is also confirming that she is giving out a record later this year! Hopefully the promotion will be as good as the content of the record!
Land animals....I live in the desert😄 She is Instantly Identifiable. I like this version much better. The emotion pours out of her and you can see it here. Few people are better live than recorded...amazing. The flavors she puts into her voice makes her unique, definite strength of hers. Can't wait to hear her as she matures.

At 6 ft. tall she is ready to go from the model's runway to the concert stage in a New York Minute. Definitely can see her grandma's Persian DNA in her. No matter the genre, she pulls you into her heart.....and you go willingly. Personally, I'm fascinated by the chameleon who changes exterior color to match its surroundings. I think of Angelina as a human chameleon of sorts. She changes her exterior with regard to vocal presentation, depending on what the song calls for by her.
I think this is a fantastic song. What I really like is the minimal amount of orchestration this and many of her interpretations have. Just a piano and a cello with very few notes between them with her voice carrying the number. She has a direct route to my feelings with her inflection and the emotion she infuses into her songs. You are 100% correct. She understands the meaning and knows how to brilliantly convey it. Disclaimer: I just love everything she does and I am incapable of having a objective opinion. She does no wrong.
It is so simple and she captivates you by her powerful singing, so you hardly notice the piano or the cello. They are there, but still it's almost as they're not. Magic! And so emotional performance.
I fully agree with your comments about AJ being a great interpreter. She has amazing technical skills but one never feel like that she uses them just to show off. Her way to use effects(melisma, vibrato...) is very tastefully and add to the emotional delivery of the song. Somehow even though her covers are very personalized she always keep true to the song. She is really gifted.
Thanks for such a sensitive review of Angelina! For me, Angelina infuses the lyrics with the right amount of emotion, not too much, not too little! It makes her vocal story believable and draws the listener in.

Seeing her sing, in this beautiful black & white video is absolutely wonderful, after having listened to her voice hundreds of times in the previous video with the drawings of her grandmother, to see her now interpret her song with such skill, even changing it slightly is absolutely fantastic, full admiration for her evolution, as a person and as a singer, it is impossible to break away from it. This is a very sweet and very intense song dedicated with infinite love to the missing grandfather and to all the people who have lost someone, but it is also a song full of hope, with beautiful lyrics, especially if you think it was written by a 14 year old girl ❤️ ❤️
I not sure how, I missed this reaction. I know it’s from two years ago. One of the magical things about Angelina , she is at home on the stage singing for her fans. There is no way to fully describe how much better she is live.

Animals, I like to do what they do on the Discovery Channel, underwater would be really interesting. I've never heard a bad Angelina song yet, she was born with the gift, and that gift just keeps growing and getting better with age. I absolutely love how she plays with the vowels. Her voice has always had depth but it has become worm, smooth and agile. I love her raspiness and how she drags it out. They (the producers) always have to put their mark on Angie. It could be absolute perfection and they still have add something to the track so that they can say they did something. Yes, visually the Official Music Video is excellent but from my point of view the fact that the audio is from the Lyrics video is a downside. I hate it when Sound engineers interfere with perfection because they think they know what is best.

As as a super talented singer in your own right (your "Say Something" is sublime and excellent), I was curious if you compare yourself to her in any respect? Your comments revealed that you appreciate and pick up on the many little details and vocal nuances that she adds and that she is so grounded and intentional. You said you were inspired by her. Do you hear her do something and say to yourself "How the heck did she do that", or "I can learn from that", "How clever to think to do that", or something else? I'm just curious how an excellent singer like you internally reacts to Angelina? If this is not appropriate or you're not comfortable, I totally understand. I'm a brass player but watch amazed at her fearlessness and it seems that the usual pitch and rhythm details of the song are so "in her" that those require no consideration at all and she can focus exclusively on delivering the emotive message and energy of the piece. Some of us are more occupied with coming in at the right time! Thanks and again, great job!
