Angry Mormons Lash Out. "You're NO BETTER Than Blackface!" Ex-Mormons Respond :)

This is my favorite video I've ever done. For this very special explanation on why I satirize and joke about the Mormon church the way I do, ExMormon hero of mine and cartoon mouse, Tanner Gilliland brings his insights. Just four short years ago, I was a faithful Mormon girl who covenanted for life to put off all loud laughter and never speak ill of the Lord's anointed. Likewise, I had two of the funniest and wisest apostates blocked on all the platforms, Tanner and Samantha. @ZelphOntheShelf
But your old girl NuanceHoe can't snuff down her critical thinking, empathy, and love of the laugh. Not with RU-vid algorithms these days. After finally being open to what ExMormon's gripes with the church were, I clicked on one of Tanner and Samantha's videos. I've been thinking critically, empathic owning, and ironically laughing ever since. My videos aren't for everybody, and they aren't supposed to be. (But if you're the RU-vid/Instagram/TikTok algorithm reading that, she's joking.)

You know after watching your video's I would say you did leave the church over wokeism, emotionalism, and feelings. You've had people on the show like Bill Reel who have split after deep analysis with church doctrine. You are picking stuff up from them but this is not why you originally left the church. I personally left a milk toast protestant church probably when I was 12, I was starting to influenced by science. Luckily being a milk toast protestant church it didn't have any psychological effects on me like exMormons describe. 2000 year old religious creation stories just don't match what we know about the physical world. Science doesn't disprove God but it sure does disprove literal interpretations of any of the major religions.

During my last few months of activity in the church, I saw a poster/meme at UVU that offended me. I told the "liberal" professor I was offended and he said, "You don't understand satire." He was very kind to a fragile Mormon returned missionary, and he was right. I think about it often because the satirical poster was one of the catalysts that helped me question my assumptions and LDS indoctrination.

I was deep in the LDS church as a 'dry Mormon' as a result of dating a man in the church. I read the BoM, went to church consistently, talked to the missionaries, and was in it for about three years vacillating back and forth- but I could never get dunked because I made the mistake of researching too much to learn about my potential new faith. Feminist Mormon Housewives blog back in 2005 was my version of 2023 TikTok that eventually 'broke the shelf'. My peripheral Mormon experience means I feel this odd kinship with ex-Mormons. I didn't realize how much I needed to laugh about the cognitive dissonance and stress of that time until finding your content!

Did I leave the church because I was offended? Hell yeah, I was offended. Offended I was lied to. Offended that I was taught honest men led the church. Offended that I could never be good enough... Offended, I ended up in the ER for overdosing on anti depressants. I didn't want to die. I wanted the pain to end. I earned the right to complain. This church abused me. I tried so hard to meet their demands. I still live in a world of hurt with everyone in my family, still a TBM. while my husband watched 9 hours of conference. I was in my room sobbing. Sorry about the rant. I was a hard-core saint, and it almost killed me. Every day, I have to deal with people who feel I have broken sacred covenants and lost my salvation. I was a member for 60 years. I envy the young people who got out early.

I’m a Christian but I’m so comfortable with doubting, researching, questioning, learning about other religions and ideas… I’m not afraid because I’ll either be protected from something untrue or my beliefs will be strengthened. My best friend growing up was forced into Mormonism after losing her father to suicide, the church preyed on her mother in a vulnerable time. She had SUCH a hard time when I knew her. She couldn't do the things the other kids were doing or wear the same clothes, watch our movies or listen to our music. She was banned from seeing me for a year because her mom found out my grandma let us watch Disney movies. It was fox and the hound, my grandma even tried to think of their 'no magic' rule. She began cutting herself deeply in middle school and her mom pulled her out of school and we lost contact. She reached out to me recently and has a son, a husband and is completely detached from her mormon family. It's been fun reconnecting as adults and realizing we're actually super similar even now 15 years later! It was hard to watch someone go through the Mormon church cycle of abuse and denial growing up, I couldn't imagine living it. You're hella strong is all I can say and that's not enough.
@Geoplanetjane
@Geoplanetjane Год назад
Brava to you and your friend. I went through something similar growing up with a mom into puritanical pentecostal type churchgoing. So as this abuse began, I somehow realized my possibly only way to escape was to get into the best college and one as far away as I could with a scholarship, that is what I did. Ended up in New York City at Barnard, the women’s college at Columbia University. Got through it in 4 years and have led a pretty sensational time ever since. I did at one time join the LDS Church but I never bought into its beliefs. I did in an effort to try to save my first marriage. I stayed in for awhile, left, came back did the temple thing, married a convert in a temple, etc but then we both blew the cult once they got going on the anti-gay stuff, proposition 8 etc. So I realize what a farce it is. So how can I find your Jesus video? I am back as churchgoer, but Episcopalian, which is great. Superb music, some Gregorian chanting, liturgy very close to that of Catholic. Traditional but learned approach to the Bible and belief on Jesus. AND, female priests and bishops (real bishops with cathedrals), gay priests and bishops. the Eucharist with actual wine. No guilt. Priests and bishops required to have actual theological education, in many places actual Episcopal schools at all levels including academically fine high schools and boarding schools and at least one college/university. It’s the only church that is simultaneously traditional, aesthetically appealing, charitably oriented, truly spiritual, and progressive socially.

I hate how common of a story this is. My mother was also pray/preyed upon (pun intended) after my father died. I have been atheist as long as I can recall my own memories, but I joined anyway because it seemed to make her happy and bring her peace. And for a while, it did. However, she was "encouraged" to tearfully confess in front of the entire congregation about her...I don't know the safe YT word for this... removal of her not yet born child between me and my sister due to being both ectopic and being exposed to a radioactive therapy before she knew she was pregnant that likely rendered it unviable. Something she was already massively traumatized by, as it would have been a wanted child. Being made to treat it as her greatest sin and being barred from taking sacrament for 2 years only turned that into an unhealable wound she still cannot talk about 30 years later. As for myself, the trust that was placed in church leadership by my mother led to me being S.A.'d at the age of 9 by a member of said leadership. I had no idea what was going on due to shock, I just went along with whatever adults were telling me for a weeks after the fact, so other members of the leadership (not actual legal authorities mind you) encouraged me to "forgive" the man as that was the godly thing to do. So I did. All that happened was I got a written apology and we moved wards. My understanding of the facts is that the man was also perpetuating similar behavior on his own children, and yet despite being aware of this and the other victims, to this day said children and wife are still by his side. I only recently confessed the extent of what went on to my mother, as she was under the impression it was just touching. It wasn't. She's also put that in the refused to talk about bucket, but I guess at the very least, she and my sister (another longer story with the LDS tbh) are no longer active members. Widows do seem to be a favorite of the church.

the entire analysis of equivocating minor inconveniences to racism hit so hard because we had a very similar experience with a transphobic, antivax, 'vaccinations cause autism', etc. neighbors. when we tried to explain the discrimination against trans people they literally *immediately* said that mormons were discriminated against too "just look at joseph smith, you know the tarring and feathering" (their exact words fml), after we had been standing there for probably around half an hour defending our entire existence with no support from anyone. I thought of a really good comeback to that statement (ofc a few weeks later) and it goes a little something like this, "When in the last week have you been denied service, denied entry, denied access to healthcare, denied the ability to publicly worship, *SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE YOU ARE MORMON*? NOT A SINGLE TIME. And now, when in the last week have i been denied service, denied entry, denied access to healthcare, and denied the ability to publicly live as myself, *SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I AM TRANS*? MORE THAN I CAN COUNT!!!! ANTI-TRANS AND ANTI-LGBTQ+ LEGISLATION IS BEING PROPOSED AND PASSED, EVERY... SINGLE.... DAY!!!!! I've read several ex-scientologists' books and a couple of things (similar to mormonism) came to mind: - in scientology there is a document that forbids "joking and degrading" - also they have changed the meaning of being "reasonable" to something completely negative. (Basically, being "reasonable" is related to questioning the teachings, which is obviously forbidden)

I've always been interested in the Mormon church as an outsider, because I was raised as a Baha'i. The Baha'i Faith was founded in 1844, very much the same era as Mormonism. I don't think it's a cult any more than most other religions (although there are rules about not associating with former Baha'is, I don't know anyone who follows them), but I no longer believe. I had Mormon friends growing up, and I thought they were all very sweet and morally upright. As one of them left the church, I started to see how much pain it had caused him, with cognitive dissonances causing him actual physical pain as well as psychic. I had to cut off some Mormon friends during the push for equal marriage and more recently during the BLM demonstrations, as they were repeating hateful church rhetoric. One of them felt the need to hide her son's disability because she felt judged by other members of the church for having a child with a developmental difference. It's cathartic for me to better understand the things that the church has perpetuated that drove those wedges between them and society at large, and myself personally.

I really love listening to your story and I am not Mormon - I was raised Catholic and I was involved in what people referred to as “new age”groups - sometimes they became a little cultish. What I love about this is that you folks are taking the gospels seriously and seeing clearly how this church (and I would say many other Christian churches) are hypocritical. I love Christian scripture (and I don’t believe in Christ the savior) - especially the parts where Jesus speaks - cause it speaks about living a life in spirit and love without craving validation from the external world, and it’s institutions. Jesus was not a church- goer and did not go in for a public display of faith.

It may be a very simple point that makes sense of why alot of things are considered bad in the LDS religion. Your happiness should be definded by your ability to make the Leaders happy. It is a little further hidden by trying to disguise it as being about making God happy. Therefore other things that bring you happiness, not directly by following me, are extremely dangerous lest you realize you can be happier not following me. Hence "wickedness never was happiness" to discourage people from realizing the church isn't the only source of happiness. The sad thing is that most people complaining about being misinformed are choosing to believe misinformation over truth. That is the irony right there.

1:02:00 Can I suggest you be thoughtful about how you use the word “narcissism”? Narcisitic PersonalIty Disorder is often caused by trauma; many victims of the type of abuse that are called “narcissistic” themselves have NPD. It can be hurtful for people with NPD to hear that word used when words like “abuse” or “egocentrism” could be just as or more descriptive. NPD and even narcissistic traits are not equivalent to abuse.

Sounds like she is more in it for the money unlike you. Following her logic you could sue her for being discriminitory. The really sad part is that the real difference is that you put it out as your opinion and it is probably closer to truth while she defends something taught as truth that is probably actually lies. So much irony in her insulting you showing how she has nothing better to do than insult. Maybe you should just answer back that if she were to sue you would be forced to counter sue that the church should be blocked for their hate. Oh wait you likely wouldn't because you gave up those horrible ways.

People aren’t saying “you’re afraid to talk about Islam” because they’re violent, in Europe people have gotten their heads chopped for being critical of Islam, not in America though, no one is thinking that. They’re saying it cause Islam is viewed as a minority group religious & racially, in America they are & ppl are saying you’d get “cancelled” for talking about a protected class. It has nothing to do with the people responding violently.

Most of us just talk about what we know. I don't expect most people to know enough about Islam as they should to do a good critique or satire, and they don't meet enough Muslims for it to matter to them
@Geoplanetjane
@Geoplanetjane Год назад
Please note. There are tons of ultra orthodox muslims in the US; in every large city, especially in places like New York, New Jersey, California, Minneapolis. They are not kindly disposed to satire about their religion or their prophet, in fact that can get you in HUGE trouble. Witness the attempt last year to murder the great muslim author, Salman Rushdie, because years ago the Iranian Imam put out a fatwa, essentially a death sentence against him, for any muslim to take upon himself the willingness to actually do it, simply because Rushdie wrote a novel the imam declared to be sacrilegious. Last summer a crazy zealot actually made an attempt against Rushdie, stabbing him multiple times to the extent that he lost the sight in one eye, a seriously injured hand , and other serious injuries that almost killed him. Also, the penalty for leaving the Islamic religion is death. That, I believe is why there are so few muslim converts to any other religion.

Personal opinion here: While I wholeheartedly agree with your message during the back and forth between you(Carah) and Raven. I feel like you are sinking to an unnecessary level with the voice you are using to characterize her comments. As a mother of teenagers, I have found it's unproductive to exaggerate in such a way, if your real objective is to help her see behind the curtain of mormonism.
