Sage: Did any kid actually care about Ash and Misty "will they, won't they" relationship? Yes, yes they were kids who cared about it. I should know, I was one of them
Okay, the reason Misty is angry at Lawerence (The Villan's name) is because of the way he's going about it. Pokemon Trainers catch pokemon sure, but they give them plenty of freedom and it's not like they just catch them and store them (atleast not in the anime). Lawrence meanwhile essentially plans to just keep the birds as displays. Litterally keeping them trapped in those cages just for him to stare at whenever he feels the need. Very notable difference.
not much of a difference when you realize most of their pokemon stay stuffed in pokeballs. Newer versions may skirt that, but it is a cockfighting simulator
@@thefanwithoutaface8105 Not all cockfights are to the death. Granted that's kinda like saying you don't do any crimes in GTA because you, the player, aren't sent to jail. Pokemon as a franchise *are* cockfighting simulators. And some Pokemon fans know this and still enjoy it, which I respect.
This and the first movie's criticism of capturing and making Pokemon fight was actually an edit done by 4Kids to simply it. For example, during the battle between the Pokemon and their cloned versions, Jessie and James have compared the fighting to harming oneself. Seeing yourself in both the past and the present, all the while reflecting on their own existence. Linking it to their own situation, since they hurt their old selves with the job they took and not feeling good about it at all. Here, the reason why Lawrence kidnapping the Legendary Birds is seen as a bad thing is because the movie's main theme is about living out your own existence however you see fit, but taking into consideration other people and living beings and respecting everyone's values. That is something he didn't do, because he merely saw them as things to collect as oppose to living beings that should be cared about.
It’s probably why the 3rd movie manages to hold up so well. From what I gather, there was very little about the story or themes that changed, so even watching it over a decade later I still enjoy it.
I believe you mean a man of culture as well ('-' ) I also fell off after gen 2. Gen 3 and after felt like a massive drop in quality. Although I did enjoy the Detective Pikachu film..
@@smurfjegeren9739 Gen 3 was in improvement because it allowed you to use a water Pokèmon so explore the water at your whim. Not to mention it allowed you to make a home base in certain spots so you wouldn't have to go to PC's to store your Pokèmon, and you can buy stuff to make it more homely. Though I agree. Everything after 3 was a decline in quality.
@@Green-Raccoon777 I think its a purely subjective matter. I honestly didnt care much for these changes, and speak from a point of pokemon design. Gen 3 wasnt anywhere near as bad as later gens, but I feel thats where the slide that ended in literal garbage bags with eyes started.
It's amazing how in a matter of generations we've gone from a culture that held "the putting away of childish things" as a sign of maturity to be strived for, to one that cherishes the relics and the feelings of childhood to the point we've got entire schools of thought that examine the core concepts, forever searching for new insights into the phenomena.
Ok. So...as pokemon nerd that's now in their late 20s and is perfectly aware that they probably should have grown out of this...I feel the need to mention something about the lore of this franchise that explains the whole "Pokemon weren't meant to fight thing". It's been well established, even from the very first game, that pokemon ARE supposed to be companions. They LIKE to fight and the reason they go along with trainers instead of turning on them the minute they're let out is because with a trainer they are given a relatively safe and controlled environment in which to grow stronger. That's why we get messages about them not being tools or not being meant to fight to the death. Humans and pokemon have a symbiotic relationship with each other and have for centuries, so when this kinda stuff comes along it's basically seen as them fucking with the natural order. That isn't just an excuse to hand wave away the fact this is glammed up dog fighting. It's a well established part of the lore....it's just that it's not well established in every single movie. Like there are bit here and there, in the games and random dialogues and moments in the anime.
I will never forget getting both my parents to take me to see this at the theater. Both of them were asleep halfway through. I was a little embarrassed but I knew it wasn't their thing so I understood. Was actually the last movie I saw until I caught 3 on a local station late at night and the special broadcast of Destiny Deoxys in the last days of the show being on local channels. I miss back then but not for the show or the games, but the memories and experiences during those years. So many things happened and changed so fast that it was hard to adjust. I still have trouble with coping and functioning as an adult.
10:36 - I was quite invested in the Ash/Misty relationship in my youth, but I honestly don't know how normal that was. 19:51 - Best use of "Evergreen" since Cowboy Bebop.
This ship was really cemented for me by the song on the Pokemon Soundtrack CD which had Misty sing an entire song about how much she wants to confess her love for Ash.
Yep, but it was a big deal for Bennett. He had put a lot of effort into it and, despite his best attempts, RU-vid took it down twice and almost flagged him with a copyright strike which would have put the whole channel in a bad place. Bennett mentioned he was seriously considering other options outside of RU-vid before trying to upload it a third time.
"It's not like I'm your mother and you're ten years old" ... Thats... kind of a quirk of the pokemon franchise. The Novelization of the First Movie makes it clear that in universe, the age of legal adulthood is 10 years old. I mean... think about it: a pokemon licence is a drivers license, a hunting license, a flying license, a concealed carry permit, a license with which you can rent other modes of transportation, and an EMT certification (you need some credentials to be able to diagnose and apply medicine). Heck, in the manga, White (the femalr protag from Black and White) is a 16 year old CEO who goes on to help found pokemon hollywood before she turns 18. ... Pokemon's world is fucking weird.
Chrono Cross is a mess of a game with a monstrously unfocused plot a far too many characters that have absolutely no relevance. The gameplay is good but the fact that there's no exp system makes any non boss battle tedious.
So, this seems the perfect place to leave this comment: Yu-gi-oh: Several thousand monsters over the course of six generations: nobody bats an eye. Pokemon: About 800 after seven generations: everyone loses their minds!
@@chrisbuttonshaw2088 You are aware that you literally wasn't capable to cough all Pokemon on the first place, aren't you? Beside two version of the game with different set of characters, some Pokemon's are only acquirable through trade tiger and with few other you need chose per game. With Mew being literally inaccessible if you didn't have uncle in Nintendo. Whole thing was anime commercial slogan, what never has anything to do with the content of the show. In the games themselves Oak ask you to cough as many possible types as you could for his taxonomy research.
Thanks for that Ballad of Fallen Angels thing with team rocket, I almost started choking from laughing so hard. You're great. Never stop bringing the pain LoL [Solo]
thanks for the re-upload of this one. I watched literally 1 minute before and was going to rewatch it before it was pulled. Nice to get a chance to watch it.
Thank you for bringing up Marren. As a kid I remember being totally confused by her and why the group talked to her like she was a part of their adventures for a long time. I thought that I had missed a ton of episodes.
Good for you that you can reipload this. I remember that my mom taked me to see this movie. And she fall sleep while watching it. Still I enjoyed the movie and didnt notice she was sleep until the movie was over LOL
That's because she's not a tsundere, she's a Shortank. They're fairly old hat and aren't really done now, but it's why she doesn't hold up as a tsundere. You're jamming a pentagonal peg into a square hole.
This was a great episode Sage. It was fun, insightful, and had good charm, and that bit over how you learned to read hit right at home, as I learned to read in order to read Super Nintendo Power magazines. Great video!
So glad that Sage was able to post this. Like Sage I lost interest in Pokemon around the age of 13 when Ruby and Sapphire came out but regained it back around 2009. Since then I have become a devoted fanboy once more to an ever greater degree. Still Pokemon the Movie 2000 has always held a very special place in my heart as it was the only Pokemon movie that I ever owned on VHS. Wise words at the end there Sage. I'm sorry to hear that you can't feel that sense of wonder that I had lost for so long as well. It's really an indescribable feeling to watch the anime or play the games and feel like you're ten years old again.
Been playing the games since Red & Blue first came to the states. I still play them all & can't wait to try out Sword / Shield. I have all the movies, have the cards, have the manga, plushies.. I hope that sense of wonder you talked about never leaves me. Also, thanks so much for reposting this. Your dedication & stubbornness are greatly appreciated.
Lawrence the Third's name is shown in the novelization of this movie, and the other trainers names are given in the novelization of the first movie. The trainers names being: Corey( Red Coat) Fergus(Tank Top), and Neesha(Pokeball Necklace) Also, in the Japanese version of Pokemon 2000, we find out Jessie and James's ages and their relationship.
8:47- Well, Misty is one of the eight Gym Leaders in the first section of the entire series and not Ash's iconic girl....pal that hangs around him for large parts of the long anime seasons before going away for long sections for other girls to take the role. So it's natural that everyone has some knowledge of who's who in the Gym Leader list.
Yay I finally got to see this review. I am a huge Pokemon fan to this day, and the first three movies ruled my childhood. Lugia is one of my favorite legendary Pokemons and I love that flute song at the end. Great review Sage 💖👍
This is one of your best review sage! I still love pokemon to this day, and while the hype did fade after the third Movie and My Adventures into more Mature Anime would begin, I never lost my sense of wonder for the series. I can still watch the original first season and still have fond memories of when I was a kid, running through the fields, forest, and wetlands of my home town having adventures with my friends.
Oh my god you actually got this back up. I missed it the first time and thought I might never get to see it. Good review of a movie that hits me right in my nostalgia. I still love that end scene so much. I honest to god don't remember Misty going on so much about not liking Ash in the anime. Was she that bad there too? She really was my first experience with tsunderes. At least Misty wasn't the violent sort, so it's somewhat more tolerable.
@@sarafontanini7051 That really depends on personal preferences. There are a ton of Digimon that I think look just better designed then almost any Pokemon, and then there is Sukamon.
Ehhh, more like 4Kids... or Viacom... I forget if Viacom owned 4Kids. Either way, network channels suck the fun out of everything that ever brushes the word "critique."
I feel like with pokemon, you're either in it for the long haul, or you stopped somewhere around gen 2 or gen 3 (gold, silver crystal, or ruby, sapphire emerald). Myself? I'm in it for the long haul. I've been in fcking DEEP since Pokemon Ruby back in the early 2000s.
It is in fact common knowledge that Gen IV was huge down-step in the franchise, with it coughing up again with Black and White, where they changed approach.
