Pretty much, but I'd make one of his super moves a giant cannon that fires HOMEEEIIING LAAZAAARRSS! Because let's face it, the only mech in Anime history that was truly American was the original Gunbuster.
Maxter’s design had to grow on me, like most of G Gundam honestly. It’s as absurd as it is stereotypically racist, which is part of its charm ironically. It’s so ugly, gaudy & triumphantly proud of its look that it (and Chibodee himself) couldn’t be more American - what’s not to love?! Lol
"If you were American, would you design a Gundam like this?" Uh, have you seen our military equipment? The only thing preventing an M1 Abrams from surfing, playing football, and buying a ranch out in Texas is the fact that it's not alive. And don't even get me started on the B-17.
To be fair Im surprised they didn't go more crazy an over the top, Wheres the Bald Eagle jet pack that shoots red white and blue rockets from its wings?
I would maybe go for something with a basic MMA look with light weaponry like pistols however it’d have a support unit which is an eagle wing pack but the talons are heavy arms custom levels of heavy weapon and the tail feathers would be funnels that fire missiles all in red white and blue colors
When we are talking an ‘American’ Gundam design that follows the stereotypes people assume, it goes only one of two ways: bunch of crazy like the Maxter (with the option of it looking a bit like a sports car and/or packing a bigger gun like, say, the Heavyarms’ mini gun or the Dynames’ sniper rifle) or grim-dark “all mission no frills” militaristic (which technically would make it a ‘regular’ Gundam design in a series full of unorthodox tongue-in-cheek models).
The A-10 Warthog and the Gau-8. It has a gun that puts out so much bullet that it MATCHES the thrust of one of the engines. It's also a plane so tough that some have landed missing most of their wings and with no hydraulics because they still have physical controls as a backup.
So, fun fact, I live in the netherlands, every single anime fan I know of out here, wants "Nether Gundam" to be released as a model kit, they love the fact that it's literally a windmill. Because they know it's taking the piss.
It's like when they stopped airing Speedy Gonzales on TV because they thought it was offensive, and then Mexicans complained and they had to bring him back.
Honestly the only part thats really bad about the gundam is the name . Had they called it desperado gundam i think it would have been less frowned upon.
As a mexican, I LOVE TEQUILA GUNDAM! It comes back with revolvers and a guitar?!?! AWESOME!!! It's like when people were crying "Cultural appropiation" with Mario Odyssey and the poncho. Mexicans embrace that stereotype and see past it. Speedy Gonzalez is not racist, he's a fast mouse, that helps his friends, gets the girl and always outsmarts that Gringo cat Sylvester.
If memory serves, Mexicans actually protested when the Political Correctness Police (American) wanted to get rid of the character or at least stop featuring him.
The whole "cultural appropriation"/"overly-sensitive crybaby" attitude seems to primarily come from the Anglosphere (US, Australian, Canadian, British) and some Western Europeans. From what I can tell, peoples with a history of Spanish colonization (so Latin American countries, but also Filipinos) actually don't usually mind these kinds of stereotypes, especially if it means they get represented at all (and hey in this case, you get a freaking gundam to represent you, how is that not awesome, even if it doesn't win/isn't the main characters). To get them offended would actually require showing these stereotypes in a very negative light (like if Neo-Mexico's pilot was a dumb, crass, drug addict or something). But by themselves, exaggerated visual caricatures like Tequila Gundam aren't bad (just maybe tacky).
You beat me to it. Tequila Gundam celebrates our culture it doesn't offends us. In fact its more insulting to hear people despising it for looking like it does without being in our shoes. EDIT: I ate a word by mistake but fixed it.
I actually thought it looked pretty cool. Definitely can see it being "problematic", but there's something very bad ass about it- like it speaks to my 14-year-old self that's still in the back of my head somewhere. Edit: AND THEN I WATCHED MORE OF THE VIDEO AND SAW NEO-MEXICO. Jesus... that's uuuhh- Go Jay-Pan, you beautiful isolationist bastards, you.
@@holyordersol2668 you know... we could humor them and just take every country, give it an RX-78 and put a flag sticker on it. Mexico gundam is now an RX-78 with the Mexican flag on the shoulder.
As a first generation American whose family immigrated from Mexico, my older brother and I LOVED the Spike Gundam and found it hilarious it was named Tequila Gundam in the original Japanese. We were never offended and my grandpa who would watch tv with us and watched this series would cheer when he showed up. He didn't understand the story or what was being said just liked the fights. But yeah this series is a mess and its a guilty pleasure of my older brothers and mine. We used to watch this after school on toonami when ever it was on. we still quote Domon's shiny finger catch phrase. Thanks Sage fort his great video and a wonderful trip down memory lane!
@@thomasffrench3639 It's not a stereotype if it's everything you love about your culture. I'm just shocked they didn't give the Tequila Gundam its double-barrel shotgun-guitar from the outset.
No I wouldn't. Mine would be even MORE Merican, with Eagle pauldrons, Statue of Liberty crown, Stars and Stripes paint job and giant guns that shoot smaller guns that shoot hamburgers.
I can't enter a G Gundam discussion without Mark Gatha, Domon's Voice Actor, coming up. It's a shame the guy retired, but becoming a doctor is probably one of the most admirable things a retired voice actor has done post-retirement. Anyway, thanks for reviewing what I will forever call Street Fighter II Gundam!
Mark Gatha Also voiced Megaman X in Megaman X8, Maverick Hunter X, the Day of Σ OVA, and Command Mission as well. He was surprisingly good as X along side Lucas Gilbertson’s Zero too.
Master Asia was my favorite thing in creation for the longest time, and after having become intimately familiar with Fist of the North Star years later, he's even better because it's like him and his horse are just trying one up Raoh and Kokuoh. It's so fucking glorious.
G Gundam writer 1: What if they had a time limit match with barbwire and explosives?!? G Gundam writer 2: ...you’ve been watching FMW again, haven’t you?
@@boxtank5288 G Gundam Writer 3: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Why don't we have Domon launch Master Asia like a Kamehameha at a bunch of Devil/Dark Gundam mooks? G Gundam Writer 4: What? Why? G Gundam Writer 3: Because.
Best Gundam Ever. Seriously. No barrier on entry: easy plot to follow, likable cast of characters, FUN VILLAINS, and arguably the best and most colorful Gundams in the whole line.
It mean that you are imbecile 0_0 G Gundam isn't even best super robot, not to mention Gundam what isn't even that genre. Yes, it is surprisingly good show for what it is, but you shouldn't confuse your opinion with the facts. And fact is that G Gundam is a exotic spin off.
@@TheRezro you should reply to the right person. It's not traditional gundam but its still gundam. Also he may not have seen many super robot shows. That said, its his right to have it be his favorite. People will like what they like no matter how you feel.
No, the 1st half if G Gundam is important to watch because how will you understands Domon's redemption arc is you didn't know what his character was like before hand?
G Gundam's love story is one of the few in the series that actually works, and ends happily too. Also close your eyes at 11:52-11:56, and if you didn't realize it's from G Gundam, might sound a little different.
@@Elyseon You talking about when Rain dives out of the Dark/Devil Gundam nude after escaping, and Domon leaps and catches her with his cape covering her body?
6:24 Chapman died of a drug overdose due to all the mental stimulants he took, and he was revived with DG cells. The only flaw here is that the show didn't explain exactly how he died.
From Mexico here ... No problem with tequila gundam stereotypes do not define us .... This reminds me of the time they tried to withdraw speddy González for being offensive to us and here in Mexico we made it clear that speddy not only did not offend us it was our favorite.
G Gundam has always had a special place in my heart. Back when Toonami was on Cartoon Network and Gundam Wing was on I couldn't get into it mostly because to a 9/10-year-old me, I was not really interested in the war and politic talks that the shows go on and on about and while the space battles were cool it wasn't enough for me to stick around. Then G-Gundam came around and immediately I was hooked from the first episode. It has the action, the kick-ass characters and awesome Gundam designs that the kid me didn't even care that they were based on stereotypes while nowadays I just laugh at. I love this show and made me a Gundam fan. While the rest of the Gundam shows didn't click with me with Iron-Blooded Orphans being the exception, G-Gundam still holds up for me and I do go back to it every now and again. Also favorite Gundams: Shining/Burning Gundam, Master Gundam, Dragon Gundam, Shadow Gundam, Mandala Gundam, and Nobel Gundam (Yes it's a Sailor Moon Gundam but I still love it! Oh and Allenby is best girl hands down!) But yeah love G-Gundam, wish it had a continuation in the anime, and while there are some manga for the show I've yet to find them. Anyway, thanks for covering G-Gundam and see ya next year Sage!
Just so everyone knows ( especially you Sage) GGundam is a Go Nagai plot: The story of a deadly machine used to help humanity, brother dying / sacrificing himself, plus the overly dramatic hatred of pilot flowing into the robot being piloted- was used in Mazinger, Getter Robo, etc. The director/ creator of G also directed some of Nagai's other anime titles, and even was inspired by his character artstyle. Finally, this director also created the fantastic reboot ova of Giant Robo in the 90s! Go watch the Anime Hero's channel for FULL coverage on Go Nagai titles and influence.
Go Nagai has next to nothing to do with Getter Robo. The Getter Robo Saga is Ken Ishikawa's baby. All Go Nagai did was suggest to Ishikawa to make the robots combining mechs. Also surprised how you're not mentioning the "With Mazinger you can become a God or a Devil" line being taken literally with the God and Devil Gundams.
@@badwrongfun5541 Ken Ishikawa was Go Nagais assistant and Go was the originator of that title ( Go Getter Robo). Ken added more to that concept. This still falls under my topic of G being a Go Nagai type of story so why are you bringing up Ken Ishikawa? I would add G Gundam is a GoNagai/Ken Ishikawa story but thats too wordy and not a lot of people are familiar with both.
21:43 in the universe there is a regulation that says that no Gundam can be designed to explicitly represent its nation key word being *explicit* . so in essence each Gundam is either designed for the pilot or in a stereotype. And Nobel Gundam was of Alenby's preference so yes she liked the cutesy design.
15:24 This was because each of the 4 fighters thought that their own reasons for winning the tournament was more important than defeating the Dark Gundam. They each have a change of heart after Domon manages to defeat them one by one.
This review was alright, better than I would expect even. I think the narrative issues you brought up aren’t really issues cause they make sense in the context of the show and what the characters are going through. The first half while more motw, does serve a purpose in building up to what the show has in it’s characters and setting. As for the designs and outlook on other countries, Yeah it is obviously stereotypical, but in the show itself it’s not really done to offend or even joke around. The intent of it never came across as malicious to me, especially when one of the themes in the show is nationality, which plays a big part at the end of the show in how all the mobile fighter gundams unite to fight the dark gundam. That said , I can agree Imagawa is a big factor in how G gundam turned out the way it did. The fact that he went through all of that and turned it out as well as it did, is something that makes me appreciate the show more than I did. For me, G gundam out of the AU timelines is easily the best, besides Gundam X, and up there with Zeta as my favorite in the series. It does have it issues, sure, but with it’s story, characters, some of it’s design work, and the fantastic music by Kohei Tanaka makes it imo one of the best mech shows of all time.
The first half does a good job at establishing the main and supporting cast. It also serves a purpose in-universe as Domon is still in his obsessive phase and is going around beating up other representatives to find out of any of them has had contact with Kiyoji. It's definitely NOT pointless. Among other things, it shows that Domon is a hothead who can be callous to those closest to him but does have a heart. He's simply traumatized and with a massive murderboner after what happened during his absence and believing his brother was responsible. Plus the Super Mode is powered by rage, and his handlers have no problem in psychologically torturing him with hallucinations in order to keep him on target.
I don't think Mexicans really care about Tequila Gundam's design. They look at it as endearing as Speedy Gonzales. Yeah, they recognize it as a stereotype, but a laughably flattering one, Especially considering how alot of Hispanic humor tends to be crude and politically incorrect. As for themes of inspiration, The Shura Empire from SRW Compact 3 and OG Gaiden seem to have taken a cue from G Gundam, built an entire culture based around Kung Fu fighting Super Robots designed after Demons from Hindu and Abrahamic Demonology, and infused characters and tropes from Fist of the North Star Into the Mix. I Kind of see now how they fucked up their own world after 2000 years of martial arts themed mech warfare and decided to come after Earth. In regards to Gundam Wing being more popular than G Gundam, I find this quite disconcerting, seeing that I find Domon as a character more entertaining than all five of Wing's "Gundam Boys" combined. Yeah, he's an Idiot, but he's an amusingly insane one.
I'm Mexican American and I can tell you myself and all my Mexican relatives love speedy and my brother and I and even my grandpa from Mexico LOVE Spike Gundam and find the Japanese name both hilarious and awesome.
@@barrybend7189I think hes the best on the terms that hes got a sunnier disposition apart from the other pilots. Duo stands out among everyone else in that he isn't as dour compared to the other 4. That and Hajime Katoki's rendition of Deathscythe Hell is fucking Bad-ass. Duo is sort of a living Oxymoron. the Grim Reaper "Real" robot piloted by a Cheery Catholic Extrovert. Kind of like me, an Flirtatious, upbeat, Latina at the helm of a war machine that looks like the Madcat mated with the mobile infantry armor.
"If you were American, would you design a Gundam like this?" Y E S Also Tequila Gundam going full circle and becoming an American stereotype thanks to Tequila Gundam Desperado Amazing
I still have no idea how Domon’s dad planned to restore Earth using the powers of the Dark Gundam. Aren’t DG Cells akin to a virus and detrimental to living beings? I really do see how something like that would be beneficial to the planet’s wellbeing.
@iKarith I believe the term is "Refuge in Audacity." It hits a point of being _so_ ridiculous, so absurd that one can't feasible take it seriously, especially since it's clear it's not mean-spirited or meant to disgust or offend.
13:03 Domon was mad at Rain for letting Allenby get captured after he JUST told her to take care of Allenby. The second time, Rain told Domon to not come after her because of Rain's guilt.
The strangest complaint people had for G Gundam was "You need to know martial arts to pilot the gundams" as opposed to learning it through the manual like in other series?
Which is a weird thing for them to complain about when you consider pilots effectively control every movement of the Gundam, meaning knowing how to fight is kind of important.
Oh come off it sage. I don't believe for a moment that a lot of people were offended by G Gundam. Hell, I think a lot of people enjoyed seeing their cultures, which are rarely seen in anime, being presented. Like, I'm sure there are tons of kids from mexico who LOVE tequila gundam, as he was their countries representation in one of their favorite shows. And the Tequila Gundam was BAD. ASS. And the Build Diver's version was even MORE bad ass. Also, please do a LITTLE bit more thought when denouncing things. Portugal was a clown because CARNIVAL. You know, the HUGE catholic holiday they celebrate? Really the only point you had was Sweden's Gundam. That was done purely for fanservice. The Swedish gundam should of been a gundam that was loaded with weapons, and was hyped up as this huge threat, but malfunctioned as soon as the fight began.
HangmanVa I’m saying that some of the Gundam designs for other countries, while not offensive, are lazy. Also I thought the clown motif would fit Italy more, since that’s the birthplace of clowns and Catholicism.
"The Swedish gundam should of been a gundam that was loaded with weapons, and was hyped up as this huge threat" As a Swedish person: no. Just no. If the Sailor Moon cosplay hadn't been an option, the logical Swedish option would have been some rusty old junk that looked as if its glory days were in the 60s, with either a Volvo, Saab or Scania emblem on it. No guns at all, the pilot spends all his time trying to reason diplomatically with the opponents and/or convert them to feminism. I mean let's be realistic, Sweden hasn't been a serious military threat to *anything* for centuries now. A surprising amount of the population don't even want us to have a military - or at least not a military-military, they want a non-combat special rescue something-or-other. Like the lifeguard, but with access to all-terrain vehicles.
"It's not my country that's being stereotyped like this" After literally just explaining how his country is being stereotyped like that just like every other country. I don't even know what point you're trying to make
7:45 George was obviously inside his gundam while it was underwater. It was only when the cockpit rose above water when george opened the cockpit and exited the gundam onto its hand to challenge Domon Kasshu to a match.
@@tenkuken7168 i dont think that bandai would make a real grade g gundam kit maybe a master grade but if they make a master grade for a g gundam kit it would be a more "relevant" mobile fighter.
Just so you know, a lot of us Canadian Gundam fans (especially members of Gunpla Montreal) LOVE the Grizzly Gundam (Lumber Gundam in the original Japanese). We honestly think it's badass and looks badass. Happy New Year to all!
I disagree. I believe that it’s offensive that our gundam wasn’t designed like a hockey player with a red and white colour scheme, with a hockey stick as it’s melee weapon, a goalie net as a shield, retractable ice skates and a giant cannon that shoots out maple syrup on the back. It’s outrageous!
11:44 except when he uses the sword to push back the shadow gundam's blade. This is when Schwartz Bruder tells Domon that he needs a serene state of mind to use the super mode whenever he wants. he also cuts 3 death army machines in half with one cut later in that same episode.
I would argue G Gundam's soundtrack is just as iconic as Zeta's. It still has plenty of masterfully executed sweeping orchestral pieces, jazzy noir, rockin and extremely triumphant/intense battle themes. Here's some that are INSTANTLY recognizable as G Gundam: "Strongest Card - King of Hearts" "A Clear Mind/Burning Palm" "The Powerful Person from Neo Japan" "Winner's Elegy" "Enormous Ambition" "His Name is Domon Kasshu" "Complicated Airframe" "Defeated Partner" "Dancing in the Wind" "Neo Hong Kong Landscape" "Roaming" "Spanning the Globe" "Decorated for a Courageous Heart" "Beware the Scheme" "Endless Journey" "Darkness Comes Down"
Sweden’s Gundam with a girl because one of the stereotypes of Sweden is that it has drop down gorgeous blond women. If you just did some research you would have known this.
I think Bruder is a suitable name for the character, as it is likely more of an homage to Darth Vader (close to father in German) than any sort of hidden thing. A fun lampshade, like Racer X.
As a Mexican, I find Tequila Gundam hilarious and a lot fun! And I would go visit a Mexican colony in the shape of a Sombrero in a heartbeat! Always loved this show for how ridiculous it is
15:11 This was because each of the fighters wanted to achieve their dreams more than defeating the Dark Gundam. They couldn't afford to make hasty actions and get thrown out of an obviously rigged tournament. The only way that Domon was going to convince them is by defeating them and earning their respect. Each one of them says they'll help Domon after they have been defeated. This is where the message of "communicating with your fists" comes from."
heres a summery of my reaction every time he criticizes G Gundam. NO YOUR WRONG! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT! ITS PERFECT! NO MOM IM NOT GONNA CLEAN UP MY ROOM!!!!
i feel the same way too G Gundam is a memorable work of art it has flaws in some spots especially in the last season where they really dont do well in staying within the gundam fight "rules" but its a work of art nonetheless. Never before in my life has an anime moved me to tears like this one did as a kid it moved me and rewatching it as an adult a couple years ago I can still stand by my opinion that G Gundam was and always will be the greatest Gundam show ever made.
Oh wow! I remember watching this RELIGIOUSLY as a kid on Toonami/CN... and yet now I remember nothing about it but the faces of the characters and "Shining finger" and the old guy who took down gundams with his own hands or something. And I think he turned evil or something. ...and some guy with a mask? So mysterious.
You think G Gundam was insane...the director, Yasuhiro Imagawa, has a knack of directing some insane stories. Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still, Shin Mazinger...the first 3 episodes of Shin Getter Armageddon.. Well, he also the writer to Virgin Fleet....but we're not holding it against him..
Hey, as a Mexican, a gundam wearing a sombrero wielding 2 guns is AWESOME!!! Really, seeing something from our culture (that is not being used for jokes) in the media of another country is really good for us. The thing about national cliché is that they quickly identify something that makes that nation what it is. It's part of their culture. Heck, I can think of another design for a Mexican Gundam: A Luchador Gundam would be cool. But... if you want to make it EVEN cooler (and not fall for that cliché stuff)... make an Aztec Warrior Gundam. Of course, many wont KNOW what an Aztec Warrior is, but that's a way to teach them.
11:50 When Domon Kasshu defeated the dark Gundam for the first time, he said the following "It's vanishing. My anger and sorrow. My revenge is vanishing."
One of the things I never understood about the show was how they had a violent convicted criminal who regularly terrorized the populace with his damn robot as a national representative.
@@barrybend7189 I'm talking about that scumbag Michelo specifically. That guy should have been jailed the minute Domon beat his punk ass. The other colonies mostly treated their representatives as people worthy of respect and would not let a common thug take the spot. Of course there was the clown, the assassin, the Berserker system and Neo Russia basically imprisoning their competitors to steal their gear...
It's the Colonies that choose the Gundam fighters, and they don't care what happens down on earth. Doesn't matter if it's a criminal, long as he can win.
yes i grew up watching gundam wing on cartoon network when i was growing up in elementary school before i would even use to go to school itself i wached music videos on both vh1 and mtv before going to school those were the best days of my life as a elementary schooler my mom would allowe me to lisen to whatever i wanted as well
25:31 This point right here? Exactly the reason I don't rip on the Adam West Batman. Yes, it was dumber than a post and took nothing seriously... which was exactly why it was clearly so much fun to work on that it won audiences over. Batman the comic book was already over when that show aired. And the show's monumental success resurrected the comic. Modern Batman owes everything to Adam West. Sounds like G-Gundam did the same for Gundam.
What makes the Dark Gundam so terrifying is that initially it should’ve been destroyed when it hit earth, but instead it turned it into one of the most Powerful and deadly Threats that ever existed in the Gundam universe. It was pretty much “Lavos” in Chrono Trigger. If it had won it would’ve found it’s way to other colonies and consumed them. Also the fact that it let Master Asia exist with it without DG cells is really shows how intelligent it is, it was willing to let those live a life for the Dark Gundams survival and consumption of others.
G gundam is literally one of the best shonens ever. Both those OP's as well . . . Tells you everything you need to know and leaves you psyched & floating for the episode.
I swear, you're the only person that can shit on my childhood shows, make me agree with you but love those shows even more. Bravo, good sir. Thank you.
Considering there have been manga only gundam's for the series, that might actually exist. Though looking at the wiki I only find the P-143S Pescatore which is, bird inspired?
What's funny though is that there are now actual American and Japanese fighting robots, and the Japanese one is all sleek and futuristic AS YOU WOULD EXPECT, and the American one is huge with a big eagle on it, AS YOU WOULD EXPECT.
The thing about the Gundam designs is that the Gundams essentially are mascots for their home colony. If the pilots of the mechs had those same stereotypical designs, that would be pretty offensive. If Tequila Gundam's pilot was an over-the-top Mariachi, that would be bad. If Zebra Gundam's pilot was an African Tribesman despite this being set in the future, that would be undeniably playing into a racist stereotype. But those Mariachis and Tribesmen are a part of the history of those nation's identities. If the Japanese would give their mechs heads based on Samurai helmets, why wouldn't Neo-Mexico make their Gundam based on one of their own cultural figures? Anyone labeling the show a "problematic fave" is a little much given how much worse others have done with the same idea (basically every "world tournament" story has the exact same issue).
This series was amazing.. Gundam Wing was my first real taste of Gundam, but this was my favorite as a kid.. Yet again I have the same DVDs from back in the day as Sage. I heard the gold box (second set) was super expensive these days.. lol, I remember paying like 29.99 for 3 or 4 episodes of Lupin the 3rd or even a couple years before that Dragonball vhs lol.. thanks for the trip down nostalgic lane and content Sage
Jester Gundam felt like they had already decided on the idea of making an episode about Chibodee being afraid of clowns and shit and just tacked whatever country they hadn't used yet there.
