After dominating rock radio in the mid 70s and emerging with a big comeback in the 80s on MTV, Ann Wilson and the band Heart entered the 90s with the multiplatinum album Brigade which contained a song that became Hearts biggest hit in years. A song that Ann Wilson hated. Up next the story of Heart in the 90s including their other band the Love mongers and Ann’s experiences with the grunge movement on Professor of Rock.

Heart entered the 90s with confidence. After a rough go in the early 80s, they had a big comeback with their self titled album of 1985 along with the number one single These Dreams thereafter. Bad Animals followed suit with the 2nd biggest single of 1987 with the bombastic classic Alone. As they started the new decade with their 10 studio album Brigade. It continued their chart success that dated back to 85 with their self titled Heart album. Brigade peaked at #3 on the album charts in both the US an the UK while peaking at number two in Canada, Finland, and Sweden. The lead single from the record helped carve out his success.
All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You. was written by legendary producer Mutt Lange and was said to have been written for Don Henley. Apparently the song was first recorded as "All I Want to Do Is Make Love to You" by Dobie Gray in 1979, Heart’s rendering of the song was a smash. going all the way to #2 on the billboard hot 100 half out of the number one spot by Madonna’s Vogue.
Believe it or not this is Heart's biggest hit in most countries outside of the US and the UK, as it hit number one in Canada, for a week, in Australia and reaching the top five in New Zealand and in several northern European countries. It was also nominated for a grammy for Best Group Pop Vocal Performance, another shocker, It is the only one of the band’s singles to have been certified Gold by the RIAA.
Ann tells the story of this next as well as forming the love mongers and recording music for the Soundtrack for Director Cameron’ Crowe’s love to seattle and the music scene. called Singles. Ann talks about her exposure to the Grunge scene with many big bands from the era recording at the band’s own custom built studio Band Animals in the early to mid 90s. Some great stories in this exclusive interview with Ann.

It's a shame you are not on regular tv so you can get national coverage. You are THAT good. I'd say up there with Casey Kasem and Dick Clark. Your voice is unique in which you bring in the viewer. Many props for bringing us so much information that all of us never knew, but is always intriguing to the creativity of making songs and how or why they were made. Please do the youngsters in world a great favor and pen a book with all this info. It would be a must read for historians of music.

The funny thing is, I think Ann underrates it by saying it's about a one-night stand. The protagonist was using the guy as a means to an end. He got what he wanted, and she got what she wanted (and needed, due to shortcomings, pun intended!). It was a win-win! Very cleverly written. How does it even work if you switch to a male protagonist? 🤔

So much truth to that.... at least performing These Dreams, What About Love, etc. gave them a resurgence and boost to the next level. They still do some of the "hits" that were from outside writers live, with better arrangements, being that's what a lotta the folks paid for. But that insipid All I Wanna Do has been dead and buried, with plenty good reason, since I guess the nineties? They've not done it the three times I've seen Heart in the 2000's much to my relief.

Ann Wilson is my favorite vocalist, period. There is no gender involved in best singers to me. My second favorite is Robin Zander. When I saw Cheap Trick open for STP in 1997, I was shocked how he could still hit those same notes he hit back in 1977, and there were no effects (I actually also saw Cheap Trick open for RATT in 1988 and Robin Crosby had a pitch corrector for sure). Check out the video on RU-vid for Heart at CalJam. My goodness, Ann goes beyond the album even. So cool you got all these interviews with her. I always wondered what the song order would have been on "Little Queen" had the contractual rift with Mushroom not happened and the songs on side 1 of "Magazine" would have been in the mix. That would have been a deadlier album with "Heartless" and "Devil Delight".

I have a different take on this - a Heart song that didn't get a lot of airplay but I LOVE it. The song "Allies". It starts slow with the 'classical' sounding piano and tastefully builds... then it falls back to Ann's flute solo only to return to action with those cavernous drums that explode into the final chorus. I get chills listening to that song to this day.

dreamboat annie was their most folk-rock song, more folk than rock, and the reprise version was more country than rock. so yeah, if you're a rocker then it's not a song that you will like very much. but i liked how heart would play around with various styles, like sylvan song and dream of the archer.

But it has nothing to do with her not wanting him to feel emasculated (which, if he did feel that way, just makes him a little bitch a anyway), the woman in the song didn't care about her boyfriend/husband, just about getting what she wanted. I always loved the groove and vocals of this song, but when you break down the lyrics, they're kind of creepy. So, funny story. I'm a dee jay/ karaoke host, and one of my regulars use to sing this song (doing a pretty good job) just about every week when she came into the bar. I ended up introducing her to a guy (Zach), who became her husband (Yes, I dee jay'd their wedding reception :) ). Soooo... Anywho, one night.. a few years ago... when I wasn't working we were just hanging hanging out drinking beers, and this song's lyrics came up in conversation. So basically we Zach and I were like talking about how weird a song it was... about a woman cruising for a guy to have sex with so she could get pregnant and have a baby because her husband was impotent. So Kristen (The singer) was totally denying that's what the song was about and we had to look up the lyrics on our phones and break it down for her. She was so mad at us.... and hasn't sang the song since then. lol.

If you are that desperate to get pregnant, sleep with some guy who you know is fertile and clean, and not some stranger who might be neither. Picking up some random guy to get you pregnant is about as moronic and dangerous as it gets.

I’ve always loved the sound of “All I Want to do is Make Love to you”...actually really listening to the lyrics kinda ruined it for me. I mean, it comes down to using a strange guy to get pregnant secretly. Creepy for sure! They’re a great group, though and they still make it sound good even if the lyrics are creepy AF. 😁

As Ann Wilson said in the interview I'm no prude about sexuality but that song was wrong on every level. It really did creep me out using a strange guy to get pregnant not telling him until you're face to face however many years later. Then the song implies without words that she told the man she's in love with it was his.

I think when the pregnancy element is taken out, it's not weird or creepy, but natural. But as the lyrics are written, that just makes is so uncomfortable. A lot of women have wanted a guy they didn't know, just as men feel the same about certain women, that's normal from time to time. But the whole "sleep with a stranger so you can get pregnant" is just.... strange. No one thinks like that lol

I listened to Dreamboat Annie over and over as a kid. I would look at the album cover and swoon. I imprinted on the vibe of the songs at my tender age and that probably wrecked me for life, but whatever. Saw the Lovemongers perform at the NW Music Awards in 1992 at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. Seeing them made up for the fact that zero of the bands that won awards that year showed up (Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC, et al) "Battle of Evermore" cover opened it up and that experience is indelibly etched in my brain.

I managed to see Heart live back in 2011 (they played my city on my birthday. Awesome wife got me tickets to see them). Ann Wilson still kicked ass with vocals. This was spot on. To me, Brigade was the ultimate Heart album, combining the best of their '70s and '80s sounds. But that huge big single--yuck. "Under the Sky" is one of the best Heart songs ever--so glad he specifically brought that one up. Lovemongers were very cool too. Nice job.

My two favorite Heart songs are Barracuda & These Dreams to me both these songs show of Ann and Nancy's vocal talents off so very well. Layne Staley was one incredible vocal, his voice was spine tingling for my when singing Man In A Box. it still gives me chills when I hear it. these are songs that when you hear them, everything mentally and emotionally come flooding back full on rush, as on the day you first heard them! R.I.P. Layne And Rock On Ann you area talent next to none!

I was an 80's kid and loved listening to Heart and my mom liked their music as well. She is always cool with listening to new music but when "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" came out....I watched the premiere of the video on MTV...I didn't like it. I hated it. In fact, every time it came on MTV....I switched to VH1! I got that a woman was making all the moves and at first, I thought, "cool, ok..." but further into the video...nope. Not cool. Mom saw it later and was disgusted by it. She thought the band had waaaaaay more clout than to let a song navigate their career. However, when we traveled to Seattle, we listed to the Bad Animals album (yep via cassette....the old school COOL way, thank you) and she really enjoyed that album! I love Heart, I love Ann Wilson (one of the most iconic voices to ever bless everyone's ears), I love Nancy Wilson(one of the most iconic guitarists ever to bless everyone's ears)!!! I love that this band, through all it's changes and different musical avenues ,were more concerned with making music they enjoyed! I never thought they were the type to bow down to a conglomerate studio and do someone else's bidding....they paid their dues, time and time again. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

There are a lot of Heart tunes that I enjoy and "All I Want To Do....", while not the soaring vocal power ballad, is one that I grew to really love because it was their tune, but quite unlike their previous hits. Artists sometimes confess their feelings about a tune like this.....Cher said of "Just Like Jesse James" that it had too many words and felt it was too country which amused me, but both tunes stand on their own merits.

@@michaelburke5907 Both are pretty amazing, and maybe I’ve missed some of Ann’s range. Linda though made so many choices regarding covering so many styles!! I felt like many songs she looked at, decided what she wanted to do with it, and just did it-seemingly effortless results. She had the range, the resonance thru her range, and as much or more control over what she wanted her voice to do as Streisand did. Style can challenge muscles differently. I had some generations of family where everyone sang, their parents started teaching them as children. I’d think it builds a different kind of strength across each person’s range, from so young-sort of how in medieval times boys were practicing with heavy swords and bows from so young their strength Far exceeded that of modern boys taking these up as hobbies now. On the other hand-wow Ann was 70 in this interview!?!? And even her speaking voice sounds unchanged!
