I love Ann Wilson's voice but I don't know if I would say it's the greatest in rock history. That would put her above Elvis, Sammy Hagar, Brian Wilson, Steven Tyler, Fats Domino, Pat Benatar, and so many more that I just can't think of right now. No Doubt that she belongs in that discussion but I'm not sure you could say she's the greatest.
British people are so stupid, everywhere they go they claim are british. No one care and your opinion doesnt makes it more valid if your british or not.
At the 1 minute mark when her high note elicits the big crowd cheer, I don't know how on earth she keeps it together. If I did something that caused 80,000 people to start cheering at once, I would just start laughing uncontrollably. I guess that was makes her a pro! Anyway, LOVE this woman.
I am moved to tears every time I watch this SPECIAL woman sing our National Anthem. Even though I have seen Ann Wilson in concert many Times, near the top of my bucket list is to see Ann sing our National Anthem in person.
I understand everyone has a right to an opinion. Clearly though if you listened to her through the years like I have you would know her style. This song was performed correctly and follows her vocal pattern of how she has expressed her craft. True Artist! The end was Rock and Roll!
I totally agree with you that ending was her signature thing that she does with her voice and maybe it didn’t match what the actual song should’ve been based on tradition, it was her putting her twist on it and there was actually nothing wrong with it even though people try to demonize it just saying
There never has been, and never will be a Voice that can come close to Ann Wilson, except maybe her sister Nancy....the badASS Guitarist!!!! The two together are the most incredible Harmony i've ever heard in my 50 years.
Freaking masterful! To make truly great music you have to take risks and be true. Ann has bared her soul for us in every single performance, for decades. Raw real rock n roll power here, thx for uploading. Best rendition ever imo
I hope that everyone in that live stadium knew the greatness of a God-given vocalist that was singing so beautifully for them. I LOVE Ann Wilson and love this rendition.
I see how so many people ASSUME they know how Ann Wilson, a professional singer for over 35 years and counting, who is in the walk of fame, with gold and platinum records, an icon, screwed up the song, who the hell made everyone professionals all of a sudden? This is why she has had a recording contract for so long, she knows wtf she is doing. Ever thought, maybe, this is how she planned to sing it? Ann Wilson is AMAZING and the very BEST singer there is in female history!
someone thinks she screwed up singing this?? Really? REALLY? Someone needs to be dunked into a tub of hot oil and fried like an oyster! Ann kicked this tune in the ASS!! She's f-ing the best female vocalist ever!
Bill Randolph totally agree! Damn, she has been singing her entire life...vocals can get worn, to which I do not feel hers were in this. I think she did an amazing job! Beyond her career, she is a wonderful, loving person as well. A very private person, that's what I love most about her. People who think they know more about her and her life and don't, make me sick.
Bill Randolph she is the greatest ever. totally agree! BUT lets be real...she completely fell on her face on the land of the free part. every vocalist has a bad run once in a while, and this was hers. nobodys perfect ALL the time. even though ann usually is. just a bad day, throat might have been a little rough that day, maybe she meant to start out a little lower so the high part would be easier. but once you start, you cant change keys then, ya know?
Ann sang in F#major. She didn't over shoot the high note (C#) as some claimed, but ad libed up to F#, held Eb, then descended C# (high note) on down. All in F# major scale. Ann miss a note by 5 half steps? Not happening. Intended ad lib as others have done when singing SSB. Excellent job Ann.
thank you very much for this upload and you are very right, when you say, "this is how it's done". The best rendition of the US national anthem I've ever seen /heard! Nobody has ever come close to doing it as well as Ann sang this. I love this and I'm not even American. Beats the hell out of anything Beyonce, Madonna and others have ever tried doing. It even gave me goosebumps. :)
She's fabulous, and I don't see where anybody has any right to say that she "flubbed" anything ... She sang it with some rock & roll stank on the last stanza, but she sang exactly what she intended to sing.
nobody in their right mind would intend to sing that "land of the free" part like that. she fucked up and tried to go to high....no big deal. shes still the greatest ever. but come on lets be real here. that was a completely fucked up part. it happens to everyone once in a while.
Eric Gustin Hehe nope, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Just listened to it again (it's a long time ago I wrote that comment) and I've got no skin in the game one way or the other - Ann's a great well respected vocalist, but I've never been a big fan. But I DO know vocals, and if she'd been trying to go "too high" as you suggest, she would have fucked up in an entirely different way - she would have strained and failed to hit the note, and sounded a bit like she was strangling or her voice would crack ... if you listen that's not what happened at all. What she DID do was OVERSHOOT the note she was aiming for slightly (it's a big jump - the US national anthem is one of the toughest anthems in the world to sing because of it's octave-plus jumps like that), ending up HIGHER than she intended, and tried to pull it back down with a standard rock 'n roll technique called a cadenza. Let me repeat, she overshot her high note and ended up HIGHER than she intended (it happens all the time, it's really hard to hear yourself with all the noise that's going on in a stadium), so like a consummate professional, she rolled it around a bit to make it interesting but got herself back on pitch very quickly, and finished it like a champ. There really is nothing at all wrong with the way she sang it.
Oh my god you've got to be kidding me. It doesn't matter if she overshot the note or if she aimed too high and missed it.(which if its at the top or just out of your range you will either wind up flat or overshooting it and going sharp.) The point I'm making is to the people who are saying she didn't screw up. Its ridiculous. She definitely screwed up. Nothing wrong with it. I've been a vocalist for nearly 20years myself, and it happens. Even happens to the best sometimes. And that higher part isn't out of Anns range. Its just at the top of it(at least on that day in that key, anyway). And when a vocal run is at the tippy top of your range, most people know its coming and try to overcompensate just in case. Making them overshoot it. It can go the other way too. But either way, she still botched that part. And her covering it, well it was a bad cover up, plain and simple. She's still the greatestgreatest. Just not that night, that's all
And I'm sorry, but the national anthem is not that hard to sing. Done it a million times. And done bigger endings than that without issue. Not being all uppity either, just saying, that's all. :)
love Ann, also Whitney - but the best rendition ever is Marlana VanHoose(any version) you should look her up, she was born with Cytomegalovirus causing her to be blind and Drs said she wouldn't live a year. at age of one the virus went into remission(still blind) then at age two, the poor girl was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy - knowing back story will enhance the experience - get ready to cut some onions
The best never rest! Ann, her voice so engraved in all of our minds! "If we still have time, we might still get by. , every time I think about it I wanna cry"...................... 😘😘😘😘😘
+XfuckyouX24 She is JUST AS GOOD as she was 30 years ago if not better. Only thing was, I suppose,.. she was a little nervous and if she would have just slowed it down a tempo...this would have been up there with Whitney's iconic version.
+Joe Schmoe Whitney Houston's live shows from 30 years ago were terrible she was a gimmick and escaped criticism because she was black which was the reason she was as promoted. ann wilson was stupendous 30 years ago but their was little acknowledgement from the media but the concert fans knew she was the best out there 30 years ago.
Also, when Whitney performed it, what the people in crowd actually heard was a pre-recorded vocals of her singing it, too. I respect both singers, Ann and Whitney. But if I had to choose between both, I'd pick Ann. And another thing of note, I don't know any singer out there that can sound even just a bit like Ann. But there are tons that sound a bit like Whitney out there. And I don't believe it is because Whitney is more famous. But because Ann's vocals is very hard to try to mimic.
K Y Anns vocals have yet to be touched in my opinion. I love that people acknowledge her as a legend. I only recently heard Gretchen Wilson's rendition of Barracuda and its as close as anyones gonna get. When Ann hits that "burn burn burn burn burn it to the wick..." 😍
That set the tone for the game....I knew we were gonna win after that....what a great memory watching that & the game...Whidbey was on fire..& then to get the big one..43-8....Damn it feels great...now just need to get some more rings! Go Geno, Go Hawks!!!
thank you for sharing song @kathy gill and i agree. some of the singers of today need to take note that synthesizers hide what he/she cannot sing! true acapella is true talent!
If she was a contestant on a talent show and put in this performance I think the judges verdict would be along the lines of "excellent, strong and tuneful voice, but towards the end mangled the star spangled banner". Having said this, she is undoubtedly one of the greatest female vocalists of all time.
The comment below me stole the words right out of my mouth, I still have chill bumps, ann Wilson puts her heart into her singing much respect much respect. God bless
I have a question has anyone ever heard of @Eric Gustin? ... Yeah neither have I. Ann Wilson is one of the greatest rock n' roll voices male or female of ALL TIME! She nailed it. "Land of the free" was not botched. There have been many pros who went off key singing the SSB and she is not one of them. Go back to singing in the shower.
This women has been my idol ❤ she has so much talent power and control in her voice she gives me chills when I hear her amazing talented voice she has and the best voice in the history of Rock and Roll !!!!
