Are you coming back? I'm waiting.
Okay, is this adaptation Persuasion in essence? For me, no. If I switched off I enjoyed the piece - not love - but enjoyed.
However....
Persuasion is one of my favourite Austen books, the maturity, self reflection, the romantic tension, the longing, so many things...so many things I found missing in this piece personally.
I understand their choices but this does not mean I liked them. I felt the scenes between Anne and Wentworth by themselves removed the tension we feel build in the other adaptations/book due to the fact they are not allowed a moment together to shout everything they have felt apart and now back together.
I wanted to edit it because I found it visually delightful and despite the hash up of destroying some well loved quotes and modern tweaks I still wanted to see if I could capture Anne and Wentworth in this edit with the material; the longing, the waiting.
I am going to joining @trash_rom_lover on her Trash Romance Central podcast to talk about this Persuasion and will link the podcast here and on my channel once live next week.
How are you all feelings about the adaptation?

I actually appreciate it that they got their moments to talk to each other, while I do like the silent longing and pining of an angsty second chance romance, 8 years have passed, they were in love with their past selves, and as much as Anne likes to say nothing much had changed about her, it has, same with Wentworth, the more with him. That's the beautiful thing about a second chance, that you get to rediscover the other person and fall in love even deeper with who they are in the present. I do agree that this version was kind of a mess and while the confession scene wasn't as powerful as the others, we got to see their longing, the regrets of a decision, the acceptance of it and an attempt to move on in those moments together. Plus I liked that we got to see a bit more after that final kiss. aaaaand finally, kudos to Cosmo Jarvis for letting us see those cracks in his supposed indifference/loathe towards Anne. I did not see that in the 2007 ver, that seems to be everyone's favourite.

I loved the main guy in this movie. Just for the looks he gives her. They melted my heart. That was the best part of the whole movie. That guy needs extra money

Agreed. He looks at her the whole film as one looks at a lover, or something they wish to eat. How do you miss his looks of longing, want, desire, anguish, envy, and love. People so often miss the unsaid.

Great yearning on Cosmo's [Wentworth's] part! Also love that Ann couldn't see that/him until his beautiful letter. My favorite part of the book as well -

I totally agree with you! Though the movie definitely had moments that made me want to scream into a pillow, I didn't hate it and I definitely thought it was visually stunning. And I love your edit! The colors look really nice and the whole vibe is so pretty and brings a bit more romance back into the picture. 10/10 ✨

I actually really liked the film. I have read the novel and watched the 1995 and 2007 versions but this is probably my favourite. Anne in the 2007 film is much to timid and I couldn’t understand why Wentworth would yearn for her so much.

love this! I actually enjoyed this movie a lot! I understand the criticism it's been getting but I thought it was fun, didn't take itself too seriously (plus I'll always support integrated regency casts, i love that Bridgerton has opened the door for that) fantastic work as always, hope you're feeling better!

It seems to me that whenever a beloved novel is adapted, book readers are more or less obliged to disapprove of it unless it's strictly truthful to the novel - and if you do happen to like it, you have to include some sort of disclaimer. I don't understand why. Whether an adaptation differs from the source material does not change the quality of the novel. One can very well love both the novel (as I do) and the adaptation (as I do as well). I thoroughly enjoyed this film in spite of the many alterations from the book. It isn't flawless, but I have yet to see a film that is both completely truthful to its source novel and actually works as a standalone piece of fiction.

Gorgeous video. But lord I wanted to love this film. I… just couldn’t. Anne isn’t Anne. Wentworth isn’t Wentworth. No tension, no real longing and desperation. The film felt so hollow. I’m so disappointed because Persuasion is one of my favourites. 2007 will remain superior

I'm not in love with this movie, and it's by far my favourite book ever. I didn't hate it though. Wentworths clothes confused me, hes an rich officer in the navy but dressed like a farmer. The fact people wanted them to get together when he first came back, they are supposed to be looked on by others as acquaintances. It's where the romantic tension comes from. Mr Elliot as a character seemed likable which diverged from the book... Henry Golding maybe just isn't capable of being unlikeable. I know the modern language probably bugged people but I didn't mind it so much. That said, the 2007 version had flaws too... well one particular one. Rewriting the end and removing the letter writing scene and then the prolonged run through Bath.

@@amandadublin3129 I’m not upset by the “modern” take on things - the language, the clothing, etc. My issue is that the characters seem rewritten and don’t resemble the characters from the books. Anne is quiet, observant and capable. Her strength comes from her internal fortitude and ability to remain steady and clear headed, practical throughout difficult circumstances. Frederick is hurt and pining, but he hides it beneath layers of indifference and civility. In this version the characters are so different and don’t represent their book counterparts at all - and it’s not “a new take” - it’s actually completely different characters. So it’s not even related to their book selves. Anne is unrecognizable as this condescending, outwardly eye rolling, disdain for her family evident and on display type of character that has nothing to do with who book Anne actually is. Wentworth judges Anne at first sight, then changes his mind about her without any real reason to do so. It’s before Louisa’s injury - so he does a 180 without any development in the story to warrant it. Longing and regret is such a huge part of Persuasion and this film has nothing resembling that. 2007 isn’t perfect I agree - my issues stem mainly from the choices the director made. But RPJ and SH are amazing as Anne and Frederick

@@amandadublin3129 yes and 2007 totally messed the crucial meeting in Lyme with Mr Elliot. If you didn’t know the book you’d have totally missed it. This version was an attempt to modernise a classic. The characters were barely recognisable. Wentworth looked like he was going to cry all the way through and imagine telling Anne that when he was in danger at war at sea, he would think what she would do in that situation!!!!! Attempt to pander to modern female audiences again. Mr Elliot was too likeable & fun, Wentworth wore his heart on his sleeve & Anne was knocking back bottles of wine!!!!! Having said that Mary was v funny & tbf I thought Dakota was a charming heroine, just not Anne Elliot. If we can forget this was meant to be Austen & it’s just a quirky modern take on period romance, it was a nice way to pass a couple hours.

The fact that I love your edit more than the whole film because the ANGST & SOULFUL YEARNING is missing in the 2022 version. Can you also edit Persuasion (2007) in 'Young & Beautiful' by Lana Del Rey? I so keenly felt that version more. Hoping for good edits of that version too.

Disagree about the actor who played Wentworth his face showed so much pent up emotion his love for Anne was so sad for him ever time sneak Elliott touched his love you felt he could have punched him the Elliott in the BBC Adaptions was better because it showed just how sneaky Elliott was

You did them way more justice than that movie did. Thank you for creating this beautiful edit with the little truly good stuff they gave us (especially cinematography). I felt way more of the longing and yearning in your 3 minute edit than in the entire 2022 adaptation. And now I‘m looking forward to hearing you tear this whole thing apart on Becca‘s podcast, hahah. Though, tbh, it wasn’t horrible as a movie in and of itself…

EVERYTHING was wrong about this adaptation. (Well, maybe the opera singer was okay. I wanted tot give her some credits but her long notes lasted way too loooooooooooong) Dakota cóuld have been a good Anne if she was handed a good script. First and foremost: Are you really okay? Been thinking about you! Happy that you're back. I like this video. It máy even persuade (!😉) me to watch the movie. I saw the trailer and I was like: oh NOOOOOOO, this doesn't look good. This looks like they have butchered my most favorite J.A. book.... so I haven't watched it yet. Other J.A. fans have been pretty vocal about it too and none of them were positive about it . So, I was like : Nope, not going to. Not worth it. But your work is making me kinda want to watch it....(the fact that I'm almost 100% sure it is going to be a dissapointment is keeping me from watching it.) This video was really beautiful! ❤

Getting there, still testing positive for COVID but less of the symptoms now - just extra sleepy still! Thanks for checking in ❤️❤️ If you go into it knowing it isn't a faithful Persuasion you may like it and enjoy it more, if I switched off my Austen head I laughed etc but viewing it as Persuasion will be disappointing for sure 😂

I did like this version - especially Wentworth - it just broke my heart whenever he looked at Anne. And I liked Dakota Johnson as Anne. Her Anne wasn't a milksop!! I say all this being a Jane Austen fanatic - I have read all her books - Persuasion being my favourite, seen all the TV and movie versions. I don't get all the negativity!!

Please, remember, when Pride and Prejudice came out, when Darcy came out of the pond nearly naked. We, Janites, were shocked. Then Mansfield Park came out with scenes explicit. That wasn't in the novel. Well, here is a new Persuasion, with a real Wentworth, weather beaten, scarred with salt sprays, not handsome. And Anne, finally realizes she has a chance to win him back. Positively, a different Austen. Maybe we should look at Jane a little closer. This is her last chance to show her real self to all of us. Is she Anne or Wentworth or both?....e
