Another Cyclist Dies in the Middle of a Race.. 

Update : the police investigation has concluded that André died after a fall caused by a bloody puncture between 80 kilometers and 100 kilometers per hour after the statements of the cyclist Jaka Primozic, the only witness of the accident. Rest in peace my friend André.

It’s both ironic yet appropriate that the channel that does such comical goofy commentary on the surface, can also put out an extremely respectful and poignant and classy commentary when something like this happens - thank you for honoring this man’s life

How lovely that someone speaks out and presents a visual obituary of a person who gave everything for the sport he loved. Nowhere have I seen or heard anyone show their respect in the same way. This sport is so beautiful, captivating, and at the same time incredibly merciless when it takes a young person's life in such a harsh way. Thank you for showing respect. RIP Andre - may I suggest a memorial wall outside the UCI headquarters with the names of all those cyclists who have given their lives to entertain us. Cycling is the most dangerous of sports. The organisers and money makers have a duty of care that they have ALWAYS neglected.

We all dream of a long healthy life, while we know we all can be ripped away in an instant. André were ripped away far to soon but in the middle of doing what he loved and burned for. I hope the ones close to André can find some comfort in him being healthy, in nature and in a winning position when his number were out. Honour to his memory!

And a cyclist died on the streets of Dublin today. Just saying. Once you mount a bike you are unprotected and it's a risk whether you are a pro or on your way to work. Stay safe all and best of luck.

Going downhill is part of cycling and there is little reason to hurl abuse or blame at anyone. This will happen from time to time and it is a reason to further respect the riders that take risks to build their palmares and live out their dreams of professional sports. Rest in peace, my scandibro.

It's off topic but the UCI are absurd for fining JB for smooching his wife.

I live in the mountains and descend on an almost daily basis...( at a reasonable pace) . If descents are included in the races it is impossible to make them safe, rock walls, huge boulders , barries , and big drop offs , you can't cover even 2% of it! Either you neutralise descents or don't do them, otherwise it is inevitable that accidents and tragedies will happen. To all the fallen rest in peace.

On uk TV the tour de france was advertised this evening for itv4 and nearly all the clips were of crashes, blood , burns and drama , actual cycling was not in the advert , reminded me of the old days of Formula one before they made that sport safer . I thought it was a Netflix advert !

Heres my take on it...cycling should adopt a similar method as in motorsport..theres a reason why a safety car is deployed in motorsport..so i say..whenever there is a mountain to ride up...take the time of each rider at the top..deploy a safety car at the top of the mountain to safely guide the riders down at a minimum speed...then when the riders reach the bottom then the safety car can be withdrawn and the race can continue.

I am not a dedicated follower of everything in cycling, but my awareness of the cavalier attitude of race organizers toward layout of courses over the past decade is very keen. Certain stretches of downhill runs should never be approved for races. The risk to safety of participants is too great. Perhaps governments need to establish legal liability laws that put individual members of these race organizers personally responsible for their decisions on racing routes that are likely to cause riders to exceed a safe speed. Before today, I am sorry to say I did not know Andre Drege. And I am now very sad I will never know more about him. But as fans, we need to pull together to force cycling to make better decisions about where to race. Hopefully, Andre's family will soon see that his death brought about a safer sport for future participants.

With car drivers glued to their cell phones these day you are a lucky cyclist to survive a ride whether it is training or just riding. While racing at least everyone is going the same direction and unless you want to dress riders up like motorcycle road racing riders with leathers and air bags there is going to be dangers that cannot be ruled out . No doubt this cyclist dyeing is a dark day for racing! Prayers to his family!

Thank you for bringing humanity and decency to a for-profit sport. I'm not an expert at all, but wouldn't it be possible to use safety nets in areas where crashes are likely to occur during descents? They could be repaired and reused constantly during this and other races. My heart and prayers go to André's family and friends and to the entire cycling community. RIP 💔

Condolences to his friends and family. Not as many racers died even when they races sans helmets... Perhaps having a director screaming in their ears to go faster and race pacing that has increased so that they are on the rivet much of the time has contributed to racers taking too many chances. There was a time when racers controlled the race rather than greedy directors trying to maximize the team value.
