Eh, the fear was mostly only present to the end of the Kruschev years, it kindov mellowed out and just became a bit shit. Oppression became less common and the main issues were state propaganda impeding progress, failure to compete and a system more concerned with keeping itself in power than benefiting the people. So it could've been worse(for the Russians themselves at least) , but it could've been a whole lot better too

"In god we trust" was added onto money in 1956. under god in the pledge of allegiance in schools was added in 1954. And People began going to church more regularly around the 50s and 60s. This was because of the Soviet Union partly. At the height of the Red scare the US wanted to be as opposite to the Soviets as possible. They were "Evil Atheists" So we had to be good god fearing people. Thus God was stamped on everything for a while.

Not because it was French who bravely fought the nazis(I know, some did, credit goes to De Gaulle and many others), but because L'Internationale was the Soviet Anthem until 1944. Learn history, kids.

Because it was made by russians, independently of their political inclinations (as we all know, many gifted russian musicians were coerced by the communist party into helping the communist cause). And this piece of music transpires that amazing over-the-top dramatism we, not-russians see in the russian people.

Love Russia and the Russian people (disagree with many of their modern policies), love Russia's mighty industry and ability to band together for something as triumphant as the USSR. It's just a shame that it fell apart, but that's not to spit on the Soviet Union's legacy. Setting the standard for socialism, driving the Wehrmacht back to Germany (being a great aid to the allies, who couldn't have come from the other side without the help of the Red Army), and the accomplishments in space. Hopefully, the Russian Federation can abandon its religious crusade and focus on the things that really matter. Great anthem! You can really feel the pride here, and rightfully so.
Putin more or less merging church and state, declaring themselves the 'moral compass of the world.' I'd rather see Russia as a secular state, but the Russian people seem to be returning to spirituality.

That's just the people's sentiment. As you've said, religion is returning. The church and the state are different in Russia, it's written in the constitution.
