Ant doesn’t realize that people will say similar things about this current era in 30 years. Pundits will be on ESPN talking about how scoring in the 2010s and 2020s was inflated by players using non-basketball moves to draw fouls, performed uncalled travels and carries, and padded their stats on nights where the opposing team load managed.

How did NBA popularity 🚀 during that era without skilled players? Wtf was everyone watching mediocre play for
@marklumar2034
@marklumar2034 21 день назад
This question is actually more about marketing than it is skill. David Stern was a genius when it came to promoting the league and it was a time before the NFL was a juggernaut. Could also argue that having less parity made and no social media made it more interesting for fans to tune it to see the elite players dominate as opposed to now where the league overall is more skilled and balanced out and highlights can be viewed anywhere at anytime making it feel more watered down
@mauricewells7838
@mauricewells7838 21 день назад
@@marklumar2034but is the league really more ‘skilled’? It’s for the most part 3 pointers and pick and roll. I do agree that not having social media back then may have played a part in the popularity of the game growing because it created more anticipation for the games. However the flip to that is that the players still had to play and produce a good product. Now days players have better nutrition, travel accommodations, recovery and still miss games.
@marklumar2034
@marklumar2034 21 день назад
@mauricewells7838 yes the league is definitely more skilled now. Its not a slight to former players its just natural progression like i said. The game has grown and like you said players have access to better nutrition, travel, doctors, etc. Theres better training regiments and more demand for players to be able to shoot, dribble etc. I think im 20 years the game will be even more skilled then it is now its just how it goes. But you could also say if older players were around today they'd be much better too and if players now were born 30 years ago they wouldnt be nearly as skilled
@mauricewells7838
@mauricewells7838 21 день назад
@@marklumar2034 i respectfully disagree, however I don’t wholly blame the players. I think the heavy importance of the 3 point shot has taken away from the game. Not to many guys have a mid-range or back to the basket game. Now that could just be a preference thing and I may be in the minority on that. But analytics (heavy emphasis on the 3 ball) along with the relaxing of the rules defensively have made the game more for entertainment than competitive.
@w.w.1348
@w.w.1348 21 день назад
@marklumar2034 No way you can tell me that being more lenient on the rules of dribbling and traveling, and more stringent on the defensive rules decreasing handchecking and hard fouls, means that players have developed more skills. It takes more skill to find a way to function at a high level in the tougher environment than to function at a high level in the easier environment.

I'm a 50 year old man that's been watching the nba since the mid 80s. I idolized the players of that era and fell in love with the sport because of those players. Saying that to say this, I've heard those same players speak down on the players and play of the guys playing today. Once you open that box up at some point these great players today of their own era are gonna start talking back. It can't be OK to let players from yester year crap on the way the game is played today and then say hey wait a minute, you current players can't talk stuff about the older guys. The players were great then and they're still great now period.

The NBA has a PR problem: how to remember the past without being held prisoner by it. There are too many podcasts and sports shows with old heads like me talking negatively about today's players. The 40-and-under fan is tired of hearing about 30 years ago every time a player from today does something great. The NBA is a business, and it needs its new era to have its own legends and mystique without us old-schoolers tearing it down.

I'm 50 years, lived through those eras & is as old school as they come. However in this case with all the pundits my age & older upset about Anthony Edwards comments about Jordan's opponents, CRY ME A F×CKIN RIVER! For almost 20 years now I've seen & heard sports media constantly put down The NBA's top stars to prop up Michael Jordan. If growing up you're constantly seeing older people diminishing your favorite players & their accomplishments by comparing what Jordan did in the 90s eventually you're going to resent that. Then once you look at the whole picture & see there's some mythologizing in those years, you're going to become resentful to a point. When Kobe passed Jordan on the All-Time Scoring list there were some in the media who felt compelled to remind everyone that Michael Jordan was better. Not to mention every single LeBron accomplishment comes with Michael Jordan rebuttals. I'm sure Ant has an even greater appreciation for LeBron after the Olympics & how this man will be 40 in December & still a top player. Its not like we don't have data of a 38, 39 & maybe even 40 year old (I'm not sure if he hit 40 before retiring) Michael Jordan playing in the NBA & how he was good but not close to great & with a 3 year retirement rest. These young stars constantly get Michael Jordan thrown in their face but not the whole career just the 6 championship seasons. You're gonna get some pushback from some & it's entirely the fault of the older media who is now complaining about young stars diminishing the older era. Y'all are simply reaping what you sowed 😂

I respect your point and I appreciate the fact that you’re older and have your viewpoint. Im 27 so I’m closer to the younger generation I started watching bball in the early 2000s but was put on game by my father and I also loved bball so much that I enjoyed the history of the game as well and used to watch nba tv back when they actually showed the history of the game with nba hardwood classics and the other documentaries that had. I understand the point that your making but my counter to that point is all of the criticism that this new era gets is 100% deserved and all of the critiques I hear about the modern day era is just simply true. To your Kobe point it is known that Kobe wanted to be a Michael Jordan clone is it not? He definitely did an incredible job of doing that but people have eyes and can tell while he’s the closet thing we’ve seen to Mike he doesn’t have the freaky athleticism that Mike had and that was the difference not to mention the efficiency. LeBron came in literally with the goal to erase MJ’s legacy it was being talked about recently by former players how LBJ literally said his goal is to make ppl,forget about number 23 and his actions have reflected that 100%. wearing number 23 alone and trying to remake space jam are 2 obvious examples of that goal. Also what lebron is doing at this age dosent matter for his goat case because longevity has never been the golden standard in how we rank athletes Kareem had the scoring title for all of these years and most ppl had Jordan ranked above him and we never even heard the scoring title used in goat arguments because it was always understood to be a longevity stat. This is the only time we’ve cared about a player playing at 40 and it’s clearly because lbj and his supporters know he cannot pass MJ based on accolades so they have to move the goalpost to longevity. Jordan is the golden standard of basketball so of course his name is going to be mentioned when trying to elevate players to his status that have not accomplished even half of what he has done. Another problem this era has is morals the older generation critiques how players today have the Luxury of team hopping that the athletes of the past did not. It was unheard of for a prime all star/ HOF player to up and leave the team that drafted them in the middle of their prime and go stack the deck with other elite talents in order to stack the odds in their favor against the league so of course older player and fans bring that up because it matters. Could you imagine if Jordan gave up after losing to the Pistons those 2-3 years and went and teamed up with Hakeem or Barkley or Magic etc. it would’ve broken the league, now image he did that and LOST the first finals appearance after stacking the deck and the reason he lost is because HE preformed badly. The point I’m maki g is the criticism is valid and I’m not a 90s era fan but I know the history of the game and can clearly see today’s game is a watered down product. Would love to get your thoughts on my points as I think this is a very interesting topic.

@@mikelinder8976 constructive criticism is always valid, my point was when you're constantly presenting a whole different as the gold standard without faults to put down a current era & you've been doing it for well over a decade, pushback & resentment is going to be inevitable. Rob brought up JJ Redick's comment about Jordan facing plumbers & janitors but failed to mention why he said that. Redick, like most players of the last 10-15 got tired of hearing how tough the old school was & basically saying the modern road to titles is easy in comparison. He didn't say that out of spite for that generation. Was he wrong? Sure, but not totally. Michael Jordan's Championship competition gets more embellished as the years go on. There were HOF players on those roads for sure, but their teams were nothing special & that isn't an opinion of someone trying to prop up today's NBA, his Bulls were the betting favorite in all 6 Finals. Yet I heard them propped up to be something they never were when people would talk about the competition LeBron faced including 2 dynasties in the Warriors & Spurs. Out of his 10 Finals his team were the betting favorites only 3 times. Even Kobe had to tend with a Spurs Dynasty & The Celtics Big 3. This isn't me downplaying Jordan's 6 championships in any way, but propping up his competition making them something they weren't is weak. Not only Jordan's competition but his own teammates get downplayed to prop up this debate. The biggest Scottie Pippen detractors out there are Hardcore Michael Jordan fans lol. To hear them tell it Michael Jordan took 11 G-Leaguers to 6 Rings & act as if the Bulls are a Lottery team without him when the 93-94 Bulls prove thats bullshit. That was the team a year after Jordan's first retirement that sent 3 players to the All-Star Game (Pippen, Horace Grant, BJ Armstrong), won only 2 less regular season games than the previous team & made it to game 7 of the second round in the playoffs where they pretty much got robbed vs The Knicks. Lastly, me being alive & watching all this, I can tell you for a fact that it was the 90s that started the softening of the NBA. The real rough & tumble NBA was the 80s. David Stern took a lot of the teeth out of hard-nosed defense at the start of the decade & the technical foul started weeding out hard fouls too. Funny enough, some said it was to give the star of the league at the time Michael Jordan, who had yet to win a championship, an advantage over the current back to back NBA Champion Bad Boy Pistons, who Stern really didn't care for being the face of the league because he felt they couldn't grow the game like The Showtime Lakers or Bird's Celtics of the 80s did. No they weren't saying it was rigged like dumb fans today like to say so often, but the rule changes helped the Bulls no doubt & I believe put a quicker end to the Pistons as viable championships contenders.

You ever think about something logically? How about when you've watched or played a sport for 30 years wouldn't you say you've seen a lot and are better equipped to judge talent and ability? I'd say you're young and immature if you think in you're extremely limited experience that you know more then seasoned NBA vets of all previous eras who all put MJ as the greatest ever and the 80-early 2000s as the best and toughest era of basketball played because of the focus on both sides of the court. If I could turn on a game now, which obviously I won't and see people being dedicated to there craft on both sides of the court, dribbling the ball for once, playing hard ass defense, being physical, driving the lane contested by a few big dudes , I'd tune in every game but today's basketball is not that. The ratings prove no one wants to watch this 3 pt contest with half court Carries and no defense. You can say whatever you want but I'm telling you out of experience that people are not interested in the soft, lack of skill play of this era. It takes skill to play both sides of the court, this era does not have it and the people have obviously spoken. The ratings tell all. No one cares about any of these new players. Maybe it's not there fault because they can't change the rules back to the way they were but basketball peaked and steadily declined after the early 2000s.

Y’all are so far up Michael Jordan‘s butt. RIP Bill Walton tells a story of when he heard Michael Jordan and Will Chamberlain arguing. Wilt Chamberlain ended the argument with saying they made the game easier for you and they made the game harder for him. There are rules that were in place for Jordan that y’all don’t even speak of. You talk about not watching the game and trust me I have. nobody ever from your generation brings up illegal defense.

The need to trash 90's basketball came because you oldheads that keep saying this or that guy wouldnt be able to play in that era, that players were getting beatdown every game like it was MMA and saying that the everyteam had lockdown defense. When in reality if you WATCH the whole games not highlights, players were slow as hell, almost nobody couldnt shoot a lick and if somebody had Kyrie or Curry handles they wouldve been arrested for witchcraft Ant didnt sound more stupid than Oakley when he said Giannis wouldve been a bench player in the 90's You spent 2 decades overrating old basketball and trashing this generation, now its their time. @@Taj_Rahine Skill is a function of time as skill is honed and the techniques used to hone those skills are measured more accurately due to the modernization. Data flows freely in modern times. @@chrismartino3519 All you're doing is committing a logical fallacy, and making a lot of false assumptions. Many NBA players and coaches report practicing less than players of previous eras, not more. And from what I know today's teams scrimmage less even when they do practice. You're making assumptions about modern players watching more videos and ignoring things like modern players spending less time in college. What you described is certainly a narrative, it's an illogical narrative to support your bias about modern players being better.
