Anthony Mackie and ‘Altered Carbon: Season 2’ Cast Say Stack Technology Is “Horrific” And “Exciting”

The world of ‘Altered Carbon’ opens up in the show’s second season, which arrives on Netflix in February. There are new characters to meet, new worlds to explore, and new sleeves to wear. Anthony Mackie steps into the role of Takeshi Kovacs, played predominantly by Joel Kinnaman in season 1, whose Stack now drives a militarily enhanced sleeve with super-human strength and the ability to summon guns directly to his hands merely by raising his arms. It was a lot to prepare for and, yes, Mackie admits, he got hit by a few stray guns trying to pull off the moves on screen. Ahead of the series’ return, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with the stars of ‘Altered Carbon’ season 2 - returning cast members Renée Elise Goldsberry (Quellcrist Falconer) and Chris Conner (Poe), as well as newcomers Mackie, Dina Shihabi, Simone Missick, Torben Liebrecht, and Lela Loran - to learn about new alliances being formed, who their characters are (or how they’ve changed), and whether they see Stack technology as something something to fear or something to embrace. Plus, Mackie gets candid, opening up about how Disney+’s ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ will do things for its two lead characters that the MCU movies never could.

This show is amazing it really is an introspective look at how much a person can evolve through countless life experiences but still remain true to the heart of who they really are. I don't think the point of this show is to get attached to one particular actor playing the role of Kovav but instead we're suppose to bond with Kovac's life story.

I think thats just how hes betrayed since in most scenarios one might get caught off guard by something by kovacs reacts swiftly and tactfully. Like hes done it all before in a sense.

Its amazing to come into season 2 as Anthony Mackie and exhibit the same chemistry as the original Kovacs (Will Yun Lee) with Quell. They really convinced me that he was the same person living in another sleeve. Some really intense moments between Quell and Tak in Season 2.

Yes. That’s a thing in the show that makes you think. I always thought that way too. But just after watching the show you get used to this thought so fast. It kinda just becomes normal. The perception of things for humans can change so fast. Like with the virsus now. What’s normal can change faster than we realize. Today one thinks uploading your mind and let body die is still dying. Then it becomes a thing and one will just accept that you’re your mind no matter where it is because uploading it becomes normality one day.

Macki carried season 2 with Chris Conner (AI Edgar Allan Poe) all the other characters in season 2 especially Trepp were forgettable and boring except for the AI Dig. When the the newer charcters were in danger you felt nothing. When the older characters made a short appearance you actually become sad at how boring this new season is. I even actually miss the villains and annoying characters from Season 1. Also what happened with the multi culture, multi language, multi religion sexyness from season 1? There was spanish, chinese, japanese, arabic language and culture plus, Buddhism, Catholicism, Christianity, Islam, and all we get is 2 sentences of 5 words in Japnese and 5 seconds of Japanese rap in the background (only cool part). Also why the super censored nudity ? Why should I care about a random kid that shows up for 2 mins in the whole show and somehow stepped on a land mine in the city that million of ppl walk thru everyday and everynight. Why didnt we learn about Mackie body's past like in the first season with Kinnaman's body, what happened to the original Mackie body's stack and how does he get army splicing and upgrades and not even one of the top army generals doesnt know how? What happened to looking thru Kovacs eyes and seeing all the cool holograms and cyber punkiness ....

@Sergio Díaz Nila oh damn, that is so true I forgot about that, CTAC and Envoy trained Kovac with the upgrades should easily beat CTAC upgrade Kovac. Plus how did CTAC upgrade Kovac know how to use all the tech when he hasnt seen the advances in tech for 300 years? Even CTAC/Envoy Kovac had problems with new drugs and technology in season 1

You weren't paying attention then. They literally explained it while they were fighting. Envoy Kovacs training stopped at envoy combat training. The post envoy Kovacs had that training plus his experience fighting and killing envoys with that training.

I see some comments on how Joel's ver of Takeshi was more towards being a hardened man, emotionless, even Mackie said so himself. But I highly disagree, despite his supposed "emotionless, seen it all" attitude, there was a nuance between his relationships with Poe and Reileen, and it showed in the acting. The acting never swung from "cold b*stard" to "sappy brother/friend", it always found a good middle ground. Season 2's acting definitly swung alot more especially when it came to Tak's relationship with Poe. There's a difference when you're being an *ss to someone you care about, and someone you don't care about. Tak definitely cares alot about Poe, but it really didn't show in the acting. May not entirely be Mackie's fault, I get a sense from the entire season that the cast/crew/studio probably had alot less time and budget to get the show filmed, so the connection of the characters/actors hadn't been built/fleshed out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this season, I was a bit skeptical at first with Mackie, but I think he developed the role as takeshi very well and boy did It ramp up at the climax. I could rewatch season 1 and 2 easily.

I like Mackie but season 2 was absolute garbage.. i mean wtf kind of scenario was that... i just lost interest after a bit.. plus there were no memorable scenes eithers.. season 1 had several epic scenes surgery room massacre, cage fight, the asian assassin scenes,..etc so many.. Mackie as Kovac was a very poor choice.. he seemed so emotioneless and not interesting to me, his tone of voice was constantly the same, wasnt funny, wasnt vicious, wasnt angry,..etc as oppose to season 1 we could really relate to the actor, he seemed so natural, smoking, drinking, chilling out, cool guy with certain relatable traits.

I think season 2 is good. I think when there was so much time in between seasons I kinda got attached to season 1, but after rewatching season 2, it's growing on me. Visually very good. People need to give season 2 a chance, all of the new characters did an amazing job.

Loved season 2 a lot more than season 1. Characters, actors, pacing, lore, and excitement for next season was better than season 1. I hope they continue to lean into the lore of this universe.

If you read the books then you'll forgive season 1 for it's toning down, somewhat, because when the motion picture rights were purchased by the same people who made the matrix I thought never will this be made film, not as is. As for season 2 good actor choices, source confusing script, and all those situations where the character would not be caught dead in (dudes an Envoy come on...) not forgetting all the contradictions as well - but I did like the reference to the book which would have been in the first season with the torture scene on Kovac (writers reason for not including as is was very sound) but now on the tech and the statement that women can take more pain and then she's strapped to the rocket and her feet are burnt off (that is a deferred reference cleverly done.) I have the same view on season 4 of The Expanse (it's like someone put it in a box and nerfed the character nuances along with the societies in which they enact... And considering the budget of Sci Fi compared to it's new producers I think that's just crazy crazy, so no BlueRay purchase of that, got first 3 seasons though and had to watch again just to get rid of the fail forward.)

Just finished season 2, and I still stand by my assessment that Mackie did well. The writing was lacking in a lot of areas, but I fully believed Anthony as Tak. I love him as an actor. His chemistry with Poe and Quell was fantastic. That last scene between him and Renee just about killed me, I can’t stop watching it. And the fact that this is a sci fi show that had three black leads meant so much to me. So sad this show got canceled.

I have to say Mackie was way better than I thought he would be, but he doesn’t hold a candle to Joe Kinnaman. Part of it is also the change in the character of Kovacs, the change of the atmosphere in the series and the lack of good storytelling thanks to inability of the new writing/directing crew. Bring the main guy from Season 1. Season 2 was trash. Started as a great show and then they started catering to the demographic.

This guy killed the character of Kovacs. Terrible choice - There are better actors out there who could have copied Kinnaman's speaking style and mannerisms. I had to stop watching. It made me mad.

But then I realized that Kovacs is an Envoy, he was taught to fit into any situation in any body. That made it more tolerable to see him making terrible decisions. But his decisions are also the writer's fault.

this season was a HUGE disappointment. couldn't finish it. loved the first season but this feels like a completely different show, retains none of kovacs mannerisms and appeal. feels like a cw show...sad

Go read the book. Kovacs is changing his sleeve every time, so if you don’t like the fact that the main protagonist is changing... you can stop watching the show ._.

No, you go read the book, they change "sleeves", their personality doesn't change. Mackie's portrayal is what was criticized, not his appearance. And if you don't like the comment, don't read it.

@@Alex-qu8tq well said people never give anything a chance I swear. I think Mackie did really well considering the fact he came from Marvel movies. Maybe something could've been fixed but in all honesty Mackie did really well and I can't see who gets to play the last envoy next.

I don't mind them changing the actor but takeshi is a brooding guy with a 1000 yard stare and morbid sense of humour just didn't get that vibe with Mackie. I wouldn't say he ruined it but he just didn't suit

Addicted to Reality just finished it. Season was meh. If the first season was a 10 for me this was like a 7. I was delighted to see that Poe has his DHF cause I thought we were going to follow quil’s story for season 3 and that would be a snooze

I hate this guy.Was looking forward to second season untill found out this guy is the main. Literally any other actor would have been better. If they wanted a black dude to be the main then any other black actor in HW would have been good.

S1 was a masterpiece in terms of tone, acting, sets etc. But season 2? TRASH... Mackie ruined it for me and i like the guy, but he was TRASH in the role, the season felt like a bad CW ripoff

Immediately rewatched s1 after finishing s2, s1 is better. A much grittier take on this cyberpunk future, yet a very well told poirot-esque murder mystery.
