I went to India 🇮🇳 in 2018 as a black woman I expected a high level of racism and to my surprise they were very cool, of course there was the odd one who carried on silly but on the whole; it was a marvellous experience. India is a beautiful country with so much history and it was certainly an education. Travelled to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Shimla (up in the Himalayan mountains). It’s a shame colonialism still runs so deep in the populations of my fellow humans.

I agree, I see this every day where blacks are arguing about skin color in India. Why are so many blacks so concerned with us. You don't see Indians talking about blacks, whites or other races.
As African, growing up in Africa, I just saw myself as a person and never felt a need to be proud of being African or Black until I lived in the Western World, including Europe and North America, particularly the United States where Black People are upressed and even murdered by primarily White Police Officers, just for being Black. After 3 decades in the western world, including 25 years in America, I'm back in Africa and I have to say Black experience in America made me more conscious and proud of being Black and African. So racism against my race had a more possitive effect on me as a person of African descent. In addition, Black Americans also play a role in the way I feel about being Black because of their pride for being Black and beautiful people.

I'm Malaysian but I have Sri Lankan Tamil (Dravidian) ancestry. Dravidians were the original first and oldest civilization in the world (Indus river valley). However, like I said, India and China remains emerging markets yielding high returns on investments. The goal is for larger percentage of the population to enter the middle class in India, this is happening daily. The difference between the poor in India and the US is different. The poor in India lack opportunity, the poor in the US have substance abuse and other problems but plenty of opportunities. So, I ask you, which system is worse?

Sometimes I wonder if some lighter-skinned people are actually jealous of gorgeous Black skin. Because, even here in the U.S., white/lighter people almost bend over backwards to remind everyone that they have a wonderful skin color. In the meantime, darker-skinned people just go on about their business. Races are particularly threatened by the presence of healthy, beautiful, dark-skinned males.
This really shouldn't be surprising to anyone. They've been discriminating against their OWN Black Indians for decades. The Dalits or Untouchables are the Black Indians that suffered so much discrimination from their lighter-skinned counterparts, that they started their own Civil Rights movement inspired by our Black Panther party called the Dalit Panthers.

This is fake news. It is true that "fairer" or whiter skin is preferable among Indians, but that only applies to people in the modeling, fashion, or Bollywood industry. However, there is no hatred for dark skinned Indians. Hatred is such a strong word. In fact, it is not uncommon for siblings in the same family to have some that have light skin and others with dark skin or any variation in skin color. My wife and I are East Indian, we have 3 daughters and all 3 have different colored skin. Indians vary in skin color, hair texture, height, etc., more so than any other race, even within our own extended family.

In addition saying caste matters is just as disgusting as saying skin color matters .the whole thing is disgusting .my husband's family hates me because even though I'm white my education and social status is not as high as his .but he is divorced from an arranged marriage in which his ex wife met all the criteria but they were miserable and hated each other . I'm not sure about the Indians, but the Chinese built railroads in the West and Canada. They were in the US Naval Academy at Annapolis in the 1860s and Harvard in the 1880s.
East Indians were not in the U.S. during the time period that the railroads were built. They are a new immigrant group that came to the U.S. after the 1964 Immigration Act was passed. It’s amazing that they are now in everybody’s country but don’t want other groups in their country.
@JT-fq2bl do some deeper research, Black Americans were the first to build any railroads and yes they was slavery in the Westcoast under different name and they being black Americans laid iron carried the wood and all that the Chinese simply extended a portion of the house that was already built so they get no credit for the foundation. There are & have been many dark skin mainstream actors or actresses in India but due to colorism they are not always presented in their natural look but rather with heavy makeup but mainstream is now also trying to represent them in their natural tone but now there are more lighter skin actresses so the situation looks more or less the same as before.

I was in India twice in the 1970s and, working in IT, have had many, many Indian (Desi) co-workers and managers. I noted that the euphemism "finding your light skinned girl" means to find a wife. I also noted while in India skin tone was associated with caste. Although caste discrimination was outlawed in India it still existed and was important to many people. The lightest tones were the highest caste (Brahmin) and the darkest tones were the bottom castes including "Untouchables" Dalit and Shudra. Tone was maintained within caste because people typically only married within their own caste and sometimes, within their own sub-caste. I don't know if this is still common in India or not. BTW--When I lived in upstate NY, Indian people were considered White but here in Boston, they are considered Black. Go figure.

Many years ago when India became independent of British colonialism, one Indian politician advanced the idea that lighter people marry into darker skinned people so that this mixture will gradually populate Indians of a uniform brown color. It will abolish color consciousness and make all Indians proud. I was subjected to more prejudice as a boy in India much more than as a dark person by my white American friends. They treated me without any prejudice.

I was born in the US in SC, both my parents and some of my other relative oppressed me because I was dark skinned and all my natural siblings are light skinned blacks even though all us looked alike.
As you can see, I look White. My mother was Black. I work as an Home Health Aide. I've dealt with a lot of White families never a problem with me being mixed. But the one person who gave me problems, a woman from Pakistan.

That is so sad. I was on a cruise ship last year and I saw this color of Coal Black Indian man that was so, so good looking and fine that I went up to him and told him so.
