ANTI-TANK CLUSTER BOMB SIMULATION | BLU-108 Skeet Explosively Formed Penetrator vs T-72 Engine Deck

The CBU-97 cluster bomb releases 40 'Skeet' explosively formed penetrators; upon detecting a vehicle below, the skeets fire a hypervelocity EFP down onto the top armour of a tank. The simulation presents the EFP formation and penetration process, against the engine cover of a T-72 main battle tank.
In reality, the skeets detonate from no less than 15m above the target, however this would not fit well into the screen, so the distance was reduced significantly. However, this would have little effect on the results as the EFP shape has already stabilised, as well as the effects of drag being minimal over 15m. The liner of the Skeet has been approximated in thickness and the fragmenting edges, which are present on most images of the EFP, have been omitted (a test model was run which included them but the expected results were not replicated). But, it should be noted that there does appear to be a version with a simple liner (no fragmenting edges), which is shown at the beginning of the video. The engine was modelled a simple 20mm steel-walled shell as the detail of its internal components was unecessary (post armour, being able to penetrate over 20mm of RHA is likely enough to disable a critical part of the engine).

In reality the EFP would detonate a lot higher above the target, however it wouldn't fit on the screen, hence the reduction in distance. Also, the EFP modelled is one without the fragmenting edge on the liner. See the description if you want to know more :)

that is cause the engine deck is thin, it needs to be ventilated as the engine produces a lot of heat, and therefore requires quite a bit of ventilation to help keep the engine cool and stop it from overheating

The MEFP lenses were always an interesting addition to the design, but I'm unsure as to how effective they were as "Soft Target Effectors". Perhaps they serve a similar role to the Lethality Enhancer warhead on the Patriot PAC-3 missile, making up for slight misses. While their shape and mass is poorly suited for deep armor penetration, they would without a doubt defeat BTR like targets while causing considerable behind armor damage. On thick or complex armor impacts, they will likely cause surface fragmentation as they "splatter" that could damage soft auxiliary equipment such as sights or degrade or destroy ERA and NERA blocks.
@SYsimulations
@SYsimulations Год назад
Maybe they deemed that the penetration of the standard liner was more than enough (even if reduced to accommodate the fragments), so they thought how they could improve it in other ways -like the ones you stated?
@Steve-mr5un

@@SYsimulations Very likely. However it would appear other developers deemed the MEFP design superfluous as neither SMArt or Bonus have it. On the other hand, with the current advent of High Density Reactive Materials and experiments with multi layer complex EFP's, it might make a comeback.

@jintsuubest9331
@jintsuubest9331 Год назад
You suddenly has 5 times the welding to do. If it is not weldable, you have 5 times toe clamp/bolt/rivet to do. How is that cheaper? What's the point of wood? Research shows monolithic plate (assuming good quality) almost always provide better performance than thin plate against penetrator of with t:d ratio massively bias toward tor projectile.
@dominuslogik484
@dominuslogik484 Год назад
you would not have 5 times the welding to do, the wood would be part of a largely external structure bolted to the base plate. think of the add on armor done to the Panzer III. another point is that it is easier and cheaper to weld thinner sheets of steel together, especially if that steel has been hardened. as for the the value of the wood, this is more of a theory on desperation rather than something created after 6 decades of constant development and improvement. wood also has the fact that it is a fibrous material and when unable to separate due to being constrained it could have some beneficial effects; though I don't believe these simulations can adequately test that theory easily. On a final note being an asshole was un necessary, plenty of stupid things have been simulated as "what if" scenarios such as a battleship cannon hitting a tank directly.

@@Carryopsis This is not novel at all, DPICM-equipped cluster munitions entered service in the 1970s. These are a variety of weapons (artillery and mortar shells) which contain a lot of mini-shaped charges inside, each able of penetrating some 100 mm of armour, enough to go through the top armour of any tank. A single 155 mm shell contains some 80 submunitions, an M26 227 mm rocket up to 677 submunitions, a GMLRS 404 of them. So, a lot per shell. The one simulated here is a more interesting one as they are "sensor-fused", the round spins in the air randomly while falling and detonates when it detects it's aiming at a vehicle. It also uses an EFP rather than a shaped charge due to these having a longer effective range. Cluster munitions only really sacrifice performance against structures, and are considerably more effective than unitary warheads against anything else, be it personnel, armoured vehicles, or other materiel.
@WelcomeToDERPLAND

Looks at the news from yesterday... Hmm... Nah, it's just coincidental timing. There was an EFP video you did 3 weeks ago asking for suggestions and I think I suggested doing a CBU-97 skeet against the roof of a tank. You've probably had the video ready to go for a few days, just waiting for the usual upload day and the news just happened to be strangely coincidentally related. Its a very interesting simulation. The idea of the CBU-97 itself is genius, combining the area effect of a cluster bomb, but without the randomness of traditional CBUs and with the anti-armour of a more targeted AT munition. I've seen some videos of these being used on missile ranges against old tanks, it's scary but also interesting. Also seen them used on DCS - yeah it's a simulator, but it shows how effective these can be if they worked perfectly and were used in ideal conditions. Once dropped 9 of them from an A-10A on a tank column, complete overkill, the game lagged noticeably, about 20 assorted BTRs and T-72s destroyed.

You can't make it thick or especially volumeous with spaced armour, because you still want to access the engine below. A heavy cover makes maintenance harder. And its already terribly hard to do, on any T tank. A leopard 2 can switch the whole engine in the field in about 45 minutes. On a T-72, its a factory/depot task and takes about a day.
