I have been taking collagen for a couple of years now and have noticed improvement with my 71 year old skin. It has improved even more with the addition of glycine (about 4 to 5 grams a day) several months ago. A little while ago I was told I look like I'm in my fifties. Now, I don't believe that, but I might look a little younger than I am. The important thing, is it has helped with my overall health, my joints and tendons hurt less. My resistance workouts seem stronger with these two added supplements (and creatine). And for skin, and overall health, I eat clean, use a sauna regularly, and also use red light therapy. I think health is about doing a whole lot of things correctly together.

Or maybe just drink bone broth which is full of collagen and glycine and still a somewhat "real food".
@davidjordan2011
@davidjordan2011 Год назад
@@wocket42 Certainly, consuming bone broth can't hurt and will help to some degree. However, the statement that bone broth is "full of collagen and glycine" sort of folds back on itself because collagen tends to be 30 to 40 percent glycine, anyway. In a broader perspective, however, there is reason to consume additional supplemental glycine on top of any collagen (or bone broth or gelatin). Glycine is "nonessential" but synthesized in very small amounts in the human body, about 3 grams per day (therefore is really "conditionally essential"). Scientific research indicates additional glycine aids in the deposition of collagen in connective tissue. An additional amount of 12 to 35 grams is recommended. Besides supporting collagen glycine several other benefits (including synthesis of glutathione and creatine to beneficial levels). More information is provided in the recently published The Collagen Cure, DiNicolantonio and Land, published earlier this year. The book is relatively dense with useful information and citations.

Unfortunately, what I'm learning is some good healthy supplements and practices affect people and men/women differently. For example, I have ocular rosacea. I used to spend 20 minutes in the sauna 3x per week because I read it helps detox and a whole array of things. Then I read that heat, strenuous exercise (I'm a cross-fitter) and a few other things aggravate ocular rosacea. Also, collagen can cause anxiety in some people. From what I'm reading and from talking to guy friends and my research, it seems to be that these things affect women more. I assume you're a man by your name. I also learned that what protects men more from sensitivity, is testosterone. Men do not get dry eyes like women as they age.

The studies showed STATISTICALLY significant improvement when taking hydrolyzed collagen. But all this means is that it is likely that there was a statistically detectable improvement- but not necessarily anything that you or I might notice. As a matter of fact, the screenshot you showed indicated about a 0.35 (units unknown) improvement but a standard deviation of more than one, obliterating any possible meaningful improvement since this means that in 59% of the cases, the improvement could swing to about one or minus one . And there would be even a greater swing it the rest of the cases. I looked at those blurry photos and I couldn't see any improvement. I wouldn't jump on the collagen bandwagon just yet. There seems to be a tendency of this website to endorse supplements, only to withdraw the endorsement later on.

Maybe if your only goal in taking Collagen supp. is cosmetic differences. For me, I do weights at the gym (since 2013) and in 2019 did a house renovation where I messed up my left knee pretty badly (my own fault) that's a chronic problem now. When I stop taking the collagen pwdr, within 3 days I'm feeling pain in my joints and have less movement in my knee. The diff is very noticable when I don't take it for a few days so for me, it's important and any cosmetic benefit is just a bonus 😃
@robertlipka9541
@robertlipka9541 Год назад
@@violetfem1808 I would also add glycine to the collagen. Glycine is cheap and taste is ok. For the reason, find the following journal paper: High glycine concentration increases collagen synthesis by articular chondrocytes in vitro, acute glycine deficiency could be an important cause of osteoarthritis; Journal: Amino Acids. I also add proline, lysine and NAC to make a custom mix (for various reasons). However, I think adding glycine is the key. I am using it for the same reason, an old knee injury causing pain. I also get very quick results. However, at the same time I also take other things, as above, plus cur-cumin and chondroitin. So, I am not 100% sure which one or what combination provides the strongest result.

Hi Dr. Brad Stanfield. I've been taking Hydrolysed collagen peptides for 7 months, and noticed great benefits in skin, hair etc!.... But the real change has been in the last 2 weeks when I added home made bone broth to my regime along with the hydrolysed supplements! I've always gone with the idea of synergistic relationships, so I take all of my anti ageing supplements at the same time as my fruit and veg smoothie (which contains the fruit and veg etc that all of the molecules are found in) This has worked amazing for me at 47 years old male, with constant amazement from friends,... But what I've noticed in the last 2 weeks that is most relevant to this video, is that my joints don't click anymore, and my ankles don't feel sore for the first few seconds when I jump out of bed in the morning! (And it's a raised bed on a mezanine!) Even when I was a teenager my joints (wrists and ankles) clicked more than they do now!

I'll happily share the recipe on here, just share it and make sure that the like of the Dr check it out to make sure it's OK, as surely there will be complications for certain conditions. So I don't want to share it without the nessessary professional advice. I take it with most of the now known anti ageing supplements.

Is it very quick - say only 4 weeks and you are back to where you started, or does the effect last much longer, and if so how long? It would be good if the Collagen levels remand high for a reasonable amount of time after a course of supplementation. This could mean that you only needed a booster course of supplementation from time to time.

Many thanks Dr Brad for the valuable information 👍 I have a question , since I am vegan I got a plant based formula which delivers the precise levels and ratios of the main collagen building blocks hydroxyproline, proline and glycine plus the full spectrum of amino acids and vitamin C , do you think it would be as effective? Thank you

I looked at the list of vitamins you are currently taking and I'm taking almost the exact same things. B12 is the only thing missing from your list. B12 helps with building red blood cells and many other really important things and most people do not get enough. I figure I could use all the red blood cells I can get to help build that collagen.
@JustLIkerapunzel
@JustLIkerapunzel Год назад
Yeah but you shouldn't take B12 randomly. Get your labwork done to see if you have a deficiency! You can take too much of a good thing. If you're eating an omnivore diet you're very very likely to have a health amount of B12 already in your body

I'm late 40s, perimenopausal, and my nails and hair had become more thin and brittle to a noticeable degree. I'm lucky in that I didn't have major wrinkles yet, but after taking collagen for a number of weeks - along with my hair and nails becoming thicker and stronger, my facial skin does seem a bit better in terms of glow and overall suppleness. * The bonus is it seems to help some muscle aches and pains I was beginning to get too! I used to take a glucosamine + chondroiton supplement (which did help) but honestly, for me, the collagen works better! Collagen is one supplement where results can actually be seen and felt rather quickly. * There are different types with numbers or Roman numerals you'll notice on packaging labels - make sure a supplement has the appropriate type for what you're trying to accomplish AND make sure it's "hydrolyzed" as he says. You can either choose a collagen derived from "Bovine" or "Marine" - but I stick to Bovine because the Marine type tastes 🐟 fishy! Yuck.

I ordered collagen after watching this, not just for my skin but my knees. I have patella femoral syndrome from a brutal summer job treeplanting when I was 22 (you know, when you're not thinking about the long-term effects of, like, anything on your body) and stubborn pain there that could use help. I'd also like to forestall any other damage I may have done on that job, since afterwards ALL of my joints ached, and one of my hands was swollen so badly I couldn't have used it for one more day on the job.

Interesting that you say you mix it with a morning smoothie. The collagen I take says to avoid eating with food, especially any protein, and to take with water only at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Curious as to how that compares with mixing with a smoothie that I assume you are adding creatine and maybe protein powder to?

Collagen peptides derived from animal sources typically contain very low amounts of tryptophan, methionine, and lysine. These three amino acids are considered essential, meaning our bodies cannot produce them and we need to obtain them from our diet. Collagen is primarily composed of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, which are non-essential amino acids. While these amino acids have their own benefits for connective tissues, they are not abundant in tryptophan, methionine, and lysine. Source: Chatgpt

Collagen is not a complete protein as it is missing several key amino acids. I would not include collagen in the total protein count if you are aiming for a certain goal. Collagen is a fantastic addition for the high amounts of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline it contains (rare in the Western diet), but your primary protein sources should be some combination of eggs, beef, fish, chicken, dairy (including whey protein), etc. as these are complete protein sources with ideal ratios of amino acids. Of course, aim for grass-fed beef, pasture-raised eggs, wild-caught fish, etc. when possible. Best wishes!
@Simon-talks
@Simon-talks Год назад
There’s no need to only count “complete protein” as protein….. your body combines essential amino acids and nonessential amino acids to build everything that it needs. So all you need to do is count total protein at the end of the day…..

I am wondering, if it's worth it to try to decrease the break down of collagen. Some people take it on a empty stomach. There are also a lot of natural substances likewhite tea, which exhibit anti-elastase and anti-collagenase (elastase and collagen are enzymes, which break down collagen), activities.

Unfortunately we cannot completely stop aging at this time but a combination of good genetics and certain supplements goes a long way to really slow it down to a trickle. I'm 38 but people think I'm 10 years younger than that. I think looking younger runs in our family as we all look younger than our ages, at the hospital when my mother gave birth to me they could not believe I was her 5th child, my mother was 43 years old but they thought she was way younger than that. Avoiding lots refined sugar and alcohol plus keeping out of the strong summer sun are also important as the sun ages you more than age itself. Of course you can always supplement with vitamin D3 in combination with K2.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 11 месяцев назад
I was pretty impressed with the effect just getting rid of refined sugar and too much processed food had on my health. Two things. At 44, 15 years of hot yoga and also not getting whacked by sunburns in my youth have definitely helped my appearance. But people always thought I was younger when I was like 20 so there's genetics involved there too. Also, getting treated for a horrendous narcotics addiction with intravenous NAD+ when I was 40 had a stunning effect on my health and repaired not only my neural connections, but showed just how much crap had accumulated in my body, especially my gut due to gluten intolerance. Now I do it whenever I can afford it, every 4-6 months.
