Dude, HUGE PROPS for taking a product provided for review and being entirely honest. I watched your review while wearing a Modmic 4 with my finger on the "buy now" button and you gave me exactly what I needed to know
The ModMic wireless was the best thing that happened to me both for gaming and for work related communication. I love my Bose qc35 but Bluetooth isn't quite there in terms of transmitting high quality stereo audio with a mic input. The ModMic allows me to use these for gaming/calls using my computer (for calls this means that I'm not treated to the artifact ridden mess that is the "communication mode" of Bluetooth headsets)
I have a pair of Sony bluetooth headphones and tried to do the same. Use them as bluetooth headphones + the modmic wireless attached. Turned out, bluetooth have massive latency - too much for gaming, especially fps games. How did you manage to get around that problem? I bought a pair of RF 2.4GHz wireless headphones instead.
@@rBennich For low latency Bluetooth you really need AptX hardware, Both in the headphones and phone or computer your connecting too. Audio quality on my Plantronics BackBeat Pros is great for wireless with no perceivable latency. Unfortunately the microphone doesn't work in high quality mode and will drop to mono if you use the microphone built in. Which is the reason I watched this video, to find a great wireless microphone. I may have to keep looking as it seems the modmic wireless isn't the way to go. The sound Isolation test didn't seem to show that it filters out background sounds and I'm in a shared home office where other voices or speakers could be picked up easily. That and their isn't enough low end in the microphone.
Finally someone with an authentic demo. No audio processing or bells and whistles. Just the real deal. Thanks! I do wish the manufacturer included some different attachment systems cause would be interesting to see if it could be used mounted to a monitor, or even the shoulder. I'm so tired of wearing headsets for hours on end in long conference calls. Perhaps they should extend the mic arm as well if it's crucial to be up close with very short distance, would make it more flexible in terms of attachment ideas.
I do appreciate you mentioning the ModMic 5. It allowed me to hear the difference on my noise cancelling headphones. And frankly, I cannot tell the difference between sound from this video with the sound from your review of the Antilon ModMic 5. Yes, one can tell the difference between the two within this video, which suggests a microphone placement may be a key factor in recording one's voice, something you pointed out. Again, thumbs up for the review .
Just saw your fix for the clipping!! Thank you so much it was driving me crazy because I still had headroom and was really confused why it was happening. This is on the modmic 5 btw and I was experiencing a similar issue.
Thanks for this review, loved the extensive audio tests. :) I'd love to see more wireless microphone solutions for headphones. I use wireless Sennheiser headphones (it's an old model, one of the earlier digital radio headphones) and I would love to have a microphone directly attached to them... but the ModMic Wireless doesn't convince me, not at this price. If it was like 50 bucks cheaper, then maybe. But for over a hundred dollars (at least where I live), this is not good enough imo. :(
Wonderful review as always Bandrew. The Antlion Modmic Wireless is rather unique, and I can’t think of any alternatives? The Astro A50 Wireless have a good microphone but are soooo uncomfortable.
For that price I'd rather spend on some quality standalone microphones like the AT2020 tbh, but I guess some would love the convenience of having the mic right on the headphones. Also I noticed the outro, I'm looking forward to it!
I have one. The boom pivots on the mic axis, and pivots again on the magnet axis. The button requires quite a bit of pressure that contributes to the thing coming out of adjustment while you are using it. However it also does that on it's own without touching it. Very janky, while also being the best thing I can find on the market of this device type. It doesn't compete with a GSP 670 though for mic quality. Probably a good bit of opportunity for competition...
the question is... With that high price, how long will the battery inside it work? Otherwise you will need to buy another "expensive as hell" mic after maybe one year.
👋. Hey Bandrew I really love your vids and how you edit. Can you try to do a review on some of the Audio Technica mics? I have one but I would like to see how it would sound with your adjustments. I connect my Audio Technica Pro 31 to my iRig pre to my iPhone so. Thanks
Thanks, great video! Quick Question! I have the Sony XM4 and want to buy this mic to use as a combo. Can the microphone connect to 2 devices just like XM4 does? Please reply, thanks!
Are you sure switching the mode the mic was on actually took effect? They sound exactly the same to me, and the keyboard sound is just as loud in your test.
There's now seemingly a 'ModMic USB' that I can't find ANYBODY talking about or reviewing...Hmmm. antlionaudio.com/collections/microphones/products/modmic-usb I searched because I just watched your recent 'Best/FAQ series) talking about the poor sound quality with the 3.5mm inputs on Mobo's.
Good review as always. I use this one all the time at work, for Skype conversations and WebEx meetings, and I get only good comments about the sound. I like that the mute button makes no click , so I can jump in and out of meetings without annoying everyone. Agreed the tone isn't as good as the ModMic 5, but it sounds better than some pricier headsets (wired and wireless), and I can use it with my favorite headphones. Speaking of which, there are design issues using it with the Sony MDR7506, because it can interfere with the action of the yoke that swivels down and holds the ear-cups. You need to stick the Antlion magnet well down on the ear-piece. I also had to get a desktop headphone stand that simulates the shape of a head (well, U-shaped), because hanging the headphones on a hook style or L-shaped holder tended to let the ear-covers fold up in a way that, again, makes the Antlion mic interfere with the swiveling yoke that holds the ear-cups (Sorry for the bad description -- you sort of have to see it!) I notice you didn't put this mic on your MDR7506 phones either!
How well does the microphone filter out other people in the office in cardoid mode? As in this video with the keyboard test it seemed to not do anything at all except change the quality of his overall sound (the keyboard was just as perceivable).
In your tutorials you mention how the tone of your voice impacts your mic choice based on what issues you need to overcome. Do you have a video on how to identify these issues? Would you record on your phone? What would you look for?
Could I use this for voice over audio on VR gameplay videos? Like can I switch between headsets (quest and rift-s) and use it on both? Great video and very informative! 😎🤘💚
Hey Bendrew and community, i want to buy a microphone for singing/rapping, now i have to decide if i buy the "SE Electronics SE 2200" or the "Rode NT1". I think the SE Electronics sounds better, but i think the rode NT1 would be better for me. I'm using the Scarlett Solo 2i2 if that information helps. I have a deep voice but if i'm singing louder my voice gets higher. I don't know if something of this would help, but personally i think i should buy the rode nt1 :| Could someone answer me if he has experience?
as much as i like the modmic 5.0, the static and hiss it produces at sometimes is just awful for video and just talking to friends. the modmic wireless fixes that issue for me and i can use wireless headphones to have a fully wireless solution, I think that that is definitely worth the slightly less high quality of the microphone.
While I see the point of the modmic, making your normal headphones into a headset, but I honestly believe it would make more sense to get a cheap desktop mic
Clipping might be in the input stage of the transmitter side, computer only does process that already digital sound. I Think if antlion have adjusted the input gain int the transmitter down it will fix it right up
So the modmike does not have two microphones for noise cancelling. It would have been nice if it could be one mic at the base of the unit. So when it hears same noise on both microphones it cancels that out and only send the difference that the mic at your mouth has. Mobile phones does this. They have one mic at the ear and one at the mouth so it can cancel out noise that both of the mics hear. Does anyone know about any aptx-low-latency transmitter for microphones? I have a modmic 4, so I could use it.
I'm not a gamer... is there any reason to use one of these expensive poopy sounding headset mics for gaming instead of something like an SM58 or a lavalier mic? I can't imagine paying $120 for that thing when it sounds like talking on the phone...
My modmic wireless is picking up waaaaaaaaay more background noise/typing than my previous modmic from 2 years ago. Even in the mode where it blocks out background noise. Anything I am missing??
First honest review for the ModMic, if you check Amazon reviews for this brand you'll see that build quality is a big concern. Personally I couldn't be happier with my Sennheiser GSP300/Game One + GSX 1000 combo. I also think that the ModMic is grossly overrated, anyone would get more value of the Samson Q2u.
Bloody damn new-fangled wireless technology. What was wrong with having a wire that didn't need bloody batteries or recharging. Not the biggest fan of wireless tech as my comfort zone is wired and my 15 year of £15 Sony DJ headphones still have a beefier sound that I enjoy. Not broken so not fixing it. As always, thumbs up and good review!
Hi, thanks for great videos, I would really appreciate if you can help me choosing best gear for my videos: I want to shoot videos with 2kids talking girls and boys. The room is not isolated and I cant isolate from surrounding voices and it is just me doing the shooting with no help. So what best lavalier mike wired or wireless, Recorder, headphones and any other possible accessories that I shall need to do the mission. Note I have 2 cameras canon 5D mark 3 and black magic 4k. Thanks
I'm listening to other tests online that have a lot more body and a lot less clipping. I think you have a dud unit. Antlion are notorious for shipping duds, their QA is real questionable. And their support is of the blame-the-customer variety.
Hey Bandrew!! Can you please make a video about teaching us recording with lav mic on a smartphone and compress and edit on free software like audacity. Please
Shivam gupta that’s easy af, mate. Just record with your Lav mic on a recorder app on your smartphone. If you use iOS, even better as you can use the in built voice memo app. Then, transfer those files to your PC or laptop (I am not sure how to transfer from voice memo to PC, but you can use google drive, I guess), and use a DAW. I’m not familiar with the interface of audacity; I use FL studio. But compression is rather easy. Maybe, you can watch a few videos on how to compress on RU-vid, and learn the tricks.
@@theindiescourge1936 I have a poco f1. Recording and sendingit to my laptop is not a big deal but the editing (compression, distortion, equaliser, reverb, eco, other stuff) is a mess with me.
I'd rather not. All the Antlion ModMics I've tested are too silent and have too much noise cancellation involved. And I have a soft base voice, so that's a big no no
Ha the modmic 5 still sounds the best. No wonder they discontinued it. They want to charge people more money for an inferior product. The fact that they put a microusb instead of USB C on the wireless version is just insult to injury
Is it just me that thinks the wireless version sounds terrible and cheap compared to the wired version? It sounds slightly better than the headset mic, but still quite nostrilled and compressed compared to the wireless. I obviously understand it has to be compressed a bit for the wireless, but it could also be much better when comparing to how good wireless mics for stages can be.
Why the heck is it compressing audio so much just because it switches to cardioid mode? And it didn't reduce keyboard clicks at all! That is depressing... :( Honestly, when you switched to cardioid, to me it just sounded like higher compression rate and lower quality in general. mod mic 5 wired (OMNI) > Modmic 5 wired (Cardioid) >> Mod mic wireless (OMNI) > Cloud II >>>> Mod mic wireless (Cardioid) The mod mic 5 is legendary good! It is possible to make very good wireless headphones; i.e. signal/data stream is not the issue for good audio. So why it is so difficult to make a good wireless mic? Thanks for the review!
@Andrew M. Sheppard I simply don't care for the Yeti. Plus, too many yahoos out there in the gaming world don't know how to set it up for the best sound.
@Andrew M. Sheppard Hahahaha! Alright, rant over. Lord knows the choir hears enough about that mic to last for a decade. XD Yeah, for gaming I like the slightly lo-fi characteristic of this headset. I game occasionally, but nothing requiring more than two other fellow players.
I have trouble turning this mic on. Anyone have that issue? Takes like 2 minutes of me pressing the button and re inserting the power cable before the blue light turns on.
I can't review what I don't have. It's not available anywhere, so I'm not able to do it right now. As soon as it's available I of course will be reviewing it.
Mine gets warped / distorted every so often regardless of what usb port I use and whether or not its on the extension cable. Gave up trying to fix it after a few hours and requesting a refund.
@@user3.0tdi don't get used to me replying this fast, but yeah I'm alive! Personally I love the RS 175. I've had zero issues so far. I have a small apartment, but the range works where ever I move. Bathroom with a closed door is no problem. Just ask away if you want and I'll get back to you in the morning!
@@user3.0tdi I use them for gaming 90% of the time and I have experienced zero problems with latency, I mostly play csgo and footsteps is not a problem. There will always be more latency when comparing it to a wired headset, but I don't think I've ever even noticed it. I use a 3-5mm jack and have never tried an Optic Cable. The sound quality is fantastic! At least when you switch from a regular gaming headset like I did.
i had the modmic 5 and recently bought the wireless one. the feeling of not needing to weigh down my headphone cable with an aditional cable was alot more worth than the slight audio difference. but then again it depends what you do. i just game with friends on discord and so on and they sure dont care too much. while if you are making videos or streaming where you are talking alot then it can be another thing.
damn... 120$ wtf. and it doesn't sound that great either :c hyper x cloud is a bit less harsh tbh. but both are so harsh. the wired one is 10000x better why is it so hard to send audio wirelessly when we stream freaking movies at 4k 60fps this easily :|
I hear no difference between the two modes... Bit sad :( But really good microphone just a bit expensive. I thought funny, that he's mentioning a Sennheiser... Even Sennheiser gaming headsets sound like shit...
