After making this and answering a comment, I started to wonder if the "ModMic Uni" has, in fact, the newer mic capsule and is more than a simple rebranding to what appears to be an identical product to the 5. Antlion (the makers of ModMic have confirmed; "To be clear, yes the Uni is 100% new. New capsule, new wiring, new RF shielding, new mute switch (partially). Same Uni capsule as the ModMic USB"

The USB version honestly sounded better than the 5, closer to the wireless and your Yeti.

I'd not so closely compare it to the Yeti... but yes, It was a decent match for the wireless's sound profile (I'd expect they use the same mic module at the hardware level) & it was a noticeable step in quality to even the older modmic 5 (I now actually wonder if the Uni has the newer mic capsule in fact, perhaps it was more than a branding change to what appears to be an identical product to the 5).

@@BluntyTV To be clear, yes the Uni is 100% new. New capsule, new wiring, new RF shielding, new mute switch (partially). Same Uni capsule as the ModMic USB.

@@AntlionAudio Is there going to be a Modmic 6 with that new capsule, studio quality as before, and also omni to switch to? Wired 3.5mm? Because it really does sound so much clearer than the 5, it shocked me. (Sadly, the USB one can also not be ordered from you though German Amazon just yet, I might give that a go).

@@Jammet No plans for a "ModMic 6" like that. We're trying to keep our selection very unique without a ton of overlap. The quality difference you hear is largely due to the new USB Analog to Digital Converter we're using, as well as the new capsule. The ModMic Uni is basically exactly what you're asking for, as the omni capsule in the USB is the same as the ModMic 5's (So if you compare them side by side you can really hear the difference our ADC makes). Only the Uni capsule is brand new (which, again, is what is in the ModMic Uni). I hope that is all clear. Got myself a wireless and saw you had one on your HMD in one of your videos so I found this video to figure out potential placements. Had not considered mounting higher and bending the boom around the sensor.

Hey Blunty, how does the ModMic USB sound compared to something like a Blue Snowball / Yeti? Due to the nature of how my workspace setup, a scissor arm + Blue Snowball combo is no longer viable as it gets in the way when I'm drawing on my Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. I'm considering on picking one up, since I don't use a headphone, I'll be attaching the ModMic USB on top of my Cintiq as a Studio / Voice over Mic replacement, 20~30cm away from my mouth. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the awesome review - my Fiancee bought one of these for christmas for me for this year (long story on why we know each others main gifts) and I had asked for a Modmic 4 (not knowing they were unavailable) and she got this and hoped it would be close enough. Wow man, this thing makes the Modmic 4 look like a cheap POS gaming headset mic - I'm SO excited right now. Also, your puppy-dog eyes and your blunt (aha) "I feel like I'm insulting your intelligence, but the algorithm is a real bitch" really hit me and made me happy that a youtuber was so direct about that. Liked and subscribed accordingly my man :) thanks for the awesome content.

Thank you for this video. Awesome video. I just got the gold wireless ps4 headset. I intend to just add good audio commentary while playing games. The gold wireless has a built in mic which actually sounds awful. For someone like me that doesn't ask for too much. Im thinking of getting a cheap mic. First will it work? As I'd have to plug the mic into where the wired port is (audio port 3.5mm i presume)

Good review, Im not in need of one myself, been using the Rode NTUSB for a while now, still in search of a good Mic that can work with the Android phone for when Im on the move for interviews and stuff, the expense has been worth it for me Now if only i could find a handheld like that Sennheiser that worked with Android and wasnt iPhone only :'(

not a huge fan of mic stands or arm mics because they are just in my way when i game, so the usb works perfect for me on a hd6xx with a schiit stack

def sounds better than the 5, but my USB falls off my headset pretty easily. still great to hear the differences sampled right next to eachother in this video.

Sorry for the late reply, but essentially not really. The wired ones are actually slightly heavier (about 1-2oz) due to the cable weight, but lighter if you don't include it. They're all under 8oz (I think 5-7oz is the range off the top of my head)

I thought the wireless one would sound the worse, because the disadvantages of wireless data transfers and all. But it sounds 10 time better than the rest.

I want to put together a nice pair of headphones and a mod mic to make the ultimate gaming headset experience. What headphones and mic would you pair together?

Only issue I can see with the ModMic USB (and Wireless for that matter) is that you need a free USB port to use it, meaning you can’t use it in some scenarios, such as if you want to use it on Switch for whatever games support it (easily done with the ModMic 5 using an audio splitter to separate headphone and mic inputs); and laptops will most likely have a good portion, if not all of them already occupied, meaning good luck using it unless you unplug something else that you plan on using. Again, with the 5, in most cases you have a headphone in and mic in (or if only a headphone/mic combo in, just use an audio splitter).

@mango The real disadvantage, to be clear, is it can't work with Xbox, because Xbox has a physical security chip for USB audio. Also, of course, it can't connect to any 3.5mm device you have laying around (Cameras, cell phones, etc). That's about it though on downsides.

@@AntlionAudio that is odd comsidering the XBoxone is literally a trimmed down Windows box. You would think they would have worked together to make it compatible. Still I can't see these as real disadvantages, as it's not like the other mic options have suddenly disappeared. Just another option to be considered

wow. the USB one sounds awesome. but like 100€???? for unsleeved cables? This would get torn once I run over it with my chair. If that's improved, I'm buying. Dont cheap out on the cables!
