This is such a terrible expectation to put on someone and it feels like a very old school, ignorant comment. Criticism like this is not something that really SHOULD empower someone. People grow in spite of it, not because of it. And others are crushed by it.
I remember reading about some "where are they now" lists and apparently Julie did get her own textile company or something. And like? Good for her?? Love that.
Yeah she like procures, or manufactures textiles and then sells them to companies that make the clothes (probably more money in that honestly) and I’m super happy for her. She could have done that and still modeled, Tyra! Lol
Did he really say “I don’t like when a model thinks she beautiful, let us tell you that.” This show was just straight toxic waste floating through our TVs
Right?? Like what was that?? 😭 I'm glad I never met any toxicity in my modelling, this is like all bad stereotypes ab this industry, as if it was some bad sitcom.
All men think that way. They hate when you think you're attractive. They want all your self esteem to come from them. Not just them but him specifically. Like each guy wants you to rely on his thoughts of you for your self esteem
Those girls are freaking beautiful, periodt! I remember some years back on Tyra’s talk show, she was made VERY upset because the press took unflattering pictures of her on the beach, in a bikini after she had gained some weight. She made this HUGE spectacle about how awful shaming women for their appearance is… And that is totally true, but perhaps she could have taken her own advise to let the “criticism” make her “better”
@Jena F and yet she still looked amazing. I’m going to press X to doubt the whole you need to wear more makeup because of the darker skin thing entierly.
@@MissCaraMint seriously, she looked fantastic. Make up and no makeup. All of the women are so gorgeous. I hate how the show tears them down to have little to no confidence. It's heartbreaking.
Also am I crazy, but during Yaya’s retouched photo it looked like they lightened her skin?. They always seem to do these things to the women who are darker skinned….
@@ajsmiley1311 I thought the same thing, it also wouldn't be the first for the show. They love to throw racial motivated anything in to make the girls feel lesser than. "You're to dark." "You're to light" "stay out of the sun it's making you darker." "Go in the sun, you need to get darker." It's disgusting.
Seriously. I felt so bad for her in the episode where she was looking at herself in the mirror to practice and couldn’t stop crying because she felt so ugly. Janice especially was brutal. They keep talking about taking the critism and applying but how do you take someone saying your before and after look like an Alfred Hitchcock film and laugh?
They really did her dirty though!!! I think she had much better photos and they would always purposefully pick worse ones to break her confidence... Tyra is such a loathsome human being for those types of stunts. Even notice @5:39 how great a lot of her photos are... That one the show froze on was 10 times better than the one they chose as her "best"...
Damn they literally kicked her out just because being a model wasnt he first on her list, honestly being independent and having your own business is far more empowering than just being a model. Very strong, have to agree good exit.
Good on her for not settling for what will most likely just be some limiting modelling career. I hope she is successful in manufacturing and hopefully supporting better modelling practices, now that she's gotten a glimpse into how toxic the industry can be.
@@blossomscene they seem to do that a lot. These “criticisms” seem to come from envy and insecurity they didn’t think of it first. Tiffany was abused for her gap tooth and then in later seasons they literally created a gap inbetween a models front two teeth🙄
Don’t get me wrong. I am always for women doing whatever they want but why are these beautiful women being critiqued by women filled with plastic and people that can afford thousands of dollars worth of skincare
My thoughts exactly. Especially Janice who is practically fake in almost every square inch of her body with all the plastic surgeries she’s undergone. She wishes she could be as pretty as those girls.
Janice Dickinson was truly gorgeous, stunning as a young lady and I think now she's envious of women who are still young. I wonder what she would have looked like if she took good care of herself and aged naturally. We'll never know.
Well more than half of that models are more relatable than all that judges combined, especially the way the male judges dressed lmao... And then there's Tyra with that hair 😂
People wouldn’t be scared to take off their makeup if people like those judges didn’t exist. Society complains when people use makeup because they’re “fake” and aren’t showing their real skin while when someone has skin imperfections they encourage them to hide them and be ashamed of them Also, I kinda liked the start of the episode! The photographers were encouraging the models, everyone seemed to be so confident and happy Aaaaand then it went downhill
@@lesleymbuyikayembe7553 They said people LIKE those judges, not those judges. Even if they don't watch the show, they can still be criticized by OTHER people LIKE those judges.
Their horrified reaction on some of natural unretouched photos is absolutely disgusting. No human being have smooth not textured skin. It's so no okay to make just seeing pores and a bit of the undereye skin being a different shade as such a big problem. I hate how they blamed the girls about their skin, since not everyone born with good skin. Some are difficult that is hard to work with. and no amount of good diet, water, sleep and cleaning habits can transform it compile
@@trekadouble757 but there are many types of models. Not every model going to have their naked faces photographed like this. Being judged on your skin when nothing is wrong but they make it seem like it's horrible, is just not it
@@trekadouble757 I was thinking the same. If you are offended easily, modelling or whole entertainment business is not your place. It is all about looks. Don't join it if you are struggling.
I’m constantly dehydrated and never ever ever get pimples, never washed my face besides in the shower. Like people give the worse advice, my heart breaks for people who have issues with acne or texture. Hugs to you guys, as a person with chronic illness and disability I feel you guys with people telling dumb advice
Same. I sometimes drinks lots of water other times I forget. I eat lots of sweets and often do the crime of not taking off my make up before bed. People compliment my skin. Water helps already healthy skin, but it's not a cure.
Ummm…asking for a friend, but are you supposed to wash your face other than when you’re in the shower?…. Again, totally for a friend. I’d, uh, definitely never think that’s the only time you’re supposed to wash your face…
Dude, I’m someone who also has a chronic illness but has never dealt with acne in any realm! I’ve also struggled with an eating disorder so I have not always eaten the best or drank water and never really had more then a couple of pimples at one time. But I get so much unsolicited, frustrating advice for how to deal with my autoimmune disorder and just in general, we should all just stop assuming for others. Hope you’re doing ok with your illness.
I wish someone like you would’ve made videos like this when I was a teenager. This show was THE standard of beauty for my 14 year old, impressionable self. When the judges would rip into these gorgeous models, I felt so ugly, fat, and disgusting because if those women were ugly, fat, and disgusting, then there was no way I should have any confidence at all. I’m so, so glad I found your channel. It’s cathartic watching these videos. 💙
Jessica I love you, as someone struggling with a skin condition that is permanent due to a genetic disorder, I can relate to the constant comments made about our faces, I hope you know that you're beautiful and your skin isn't the only thing that makes you beautiful. Please don't let anyone else ever make you question yourself, or prevent you from going out and enjoying yourself, you deserve the world! You look much happier now and that makes me happy to see =)
So sad that they judged them so harshly with their bare skin. There are so many things that can go wrong with your skin that can make you insecure. I’ve suffered with eczema my whole life, which was particularly bad when I was a kid. My skin would always be red, peeling, and split open with wide bleeding fissures. It was so bad on my hands that I couldn’t bend my knuckles. And I would always try to hide my hands under long sleeves by pulling them down. Plus it feels like your skin is on fire and incredibly itchy, and sometimes you just can’t help scratch and scratch until it hurts so much you can’t bear to scratch any more, even though it still itches like crazy. It’s taken years and years to get it to be under better control, plus lots of money invested in trial and error of products, medicated creams, etc. sometimes people just need to learn to be quiet rather than give useless advice like “drink water.” My niece has it as well, and people would always comment about it when she went out to her parents or me or whatever adult was there. And she’s not dumb, she could hear and it bothered her. No one wants the things you’re uncomfortable with to be the thing people always notice about you and comment on first. One time when she was 4 I told her how pretty she looked because we had gotten dressed up to go out, and she turns to me and frowns and says “I’m not pretty! I have eczema.” Absolutely heartbreaking, and if other people had just minded their own business, and not always commented, then she never would have felt that way about herself.
Janice Dickinson is the WORST. She is so critical...so condescending....she has no filter and not in a "brutally honest" way. She's like a mean girl from high school.
It’s disgusting how these girls were treated just for having skin flaws. I have eczema too (hands and feet) so I’ve gotten a lot of comments as well, or people asking if I’m contagious. I’m the beginning is was so annoying but now I don’t hide it and I’m very open about it. Still haven’t found a cream that works yet of course. Hope you and your niece find some peace in having eczema and do the best you can. It runs in my family too and my boyfriend has it as well.
This!! I have had psoriasis for about 5 years, luckily not very badly, just on my elbows and small patches elsewhere, and yet still I get comments SO often, even from family members. Comments are often "are you okay? that must hurt" (because the patches can get very red) or "you should try E45, it worked great for my dry skin"... I have scales, not dry skin! I got these so often especially a few years ago when my elbows were really bad and contact with any liquid (even water) was agony and would make my elbows lock in place. Aside from this, I get the grossed out comments/looks too. I can't understand why anyone would judge something on a person that is temporary - same with pimples. They go away, and they're uncontrollable! So what basis is there to judge on?!
I also have eczema and its never easy. It takes a lot of work, given that there are a lot of things that factor into how your skin reacts. Dealing with a skin condition as far as I'm makes you absolutely beautiful and anyone that says otherwise is just being hateful and insecure.
Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the judges just randomly picked names out of a hat to decide who goes home each week! 'OK, who's getting bullied this week? Kelle? OK! Make her feel terrible this week!'
They really did Kelle so bogus. Legit played mind games with her. I remember seeing clips of Kelle practicing her poses in the mirror and she would just break down crying. That deer in the headlights comment really broke her. I felt so terrible for her.
hey Jessica I know this is a video from a few weeks ago, and I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it already, but you are so incredibly brave in opening up about your experience with cystic acne. while I never experience it first hand, I was talking to my fiancee about it yesterday and how many people talk about how incredibly painful and uncomfortable it can be. I never would have known because your skin has always looked flawless from what I've seen in your videos! you're an incredibly sweet, gentle soul, and I'm so glad that you continue to make videos like this. ❤
I wanted to thank you for being so open and honest about your own skin issues and how you dealt with it. I was born with Ectodermal Dysplasia which affects the pigment of my skin as well as my hair, teeth, and severe lack of sweat glands. I was teased relentlessly growing up, but it also helped me become stronger - but that doesn't mean that the bullying was acceptable or warranted. I've been watching a lot of your videos on ANTM lately, but this one literally got me teary eyed when you shared some of your personal pain you've dealt with - it shows that you are beautiful inside AND out! Many blessings and thanks again for sharing!
It's crazy how little people in general know about 'bad' skin and what causes it. My sister and I came from the same parents but she got the oily skin and I didn't, I watched her try every acne treatment under the sun through her teens, even being on birth control (which was kind of a big deal for a 14 year old in an Uber religious house) NOTHING helped and I figured that would be my fate too but I got off with just a handful of zits and I spent waaaay less time on my personal care. My dissolution with the beauty industry/standards came early as I watched them shatter my older sisters confidence and sense of worth. Because of something she couldn't control no matter how desperately she tried. I don't wear makeup to this day.
I have mix skin but have the baby face going on, I've never had acne or had to wash my face often in the teenage stages nor did I wear make up either. I belive it was after that phase and reaching adulthood in which I suddenly developed cystic acne. It was crazy, I knew nothing about skin care, zero knowledge that washing your face was suppose to be a daily thing. Yes it was hard it felt like just accidentally grazing my skin by a movement would cause a pimple zit to burst. I've tried different products not sure what did what and slowly learned about a day/night routine. Skin products did not cure my acne, vitamins did for me. It all starts from the inside, I firmly believe that. I understand everyone skin genes hereditary is different, it's just educating ourselves what works and what doesnt. Unfortunately no one tells you or talks openly about acne is a natural thing that comes and goes, it will never disappear its learning to control it. This was just so dehumanizing telling the models natural skin is disgusting when I'm pretty sure their goals being a model would have focus and priority in taking care of their skin already and probably already work hard on that.
I love how Tyra was so big on "what you see in a magazine is not real life" yet hammered on these model's normal skin. Not everyone has perfect skin lol!
Every single comment you made related to me SO much. I grew up with bad skin. Its cleared and gotten better but only in the last few years and I am 30. I still have hormonal acne. And I over think everything. More so then, but still do. Walking into the resturant..where I'd sit, if the lighting was bad, if I'm sweating to much and my make up has come off. EVERY single thing. Thank you for being so kind and letting people know they are NOT alone. Love you for every post you make. I live in Durham Region - I'm also a professional photographer. I really enjoy seeing your posts come up. Thank you again.
As someone who has suffered with acne and rosacea, I know the sting of comments from people “trying to be helpful.” I am forever thankful that my mom, who has had some of the same issues, rarely wore makeup. You can still be confident and beautiful, imperfections and all, without makeup. It is quite freeing. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing about your acne. Your confidence will inspire someone else to value themselves more for the beautiful person they are.
I have rosacea to i think, cause my cheek area under my eyes is always on the red side, maybe my forehead a tiny bit, needless to say, my face doesnt have a nice even skin tone cause of that, it doesnt even look nice and smooth, not since i was a kid anyways, plus idk whats up with my pores, they r always on display all over my face pretty much, i had a friends kid say my face looked werid pretty much, plus a co worker asked me if i got a tan, im just like, yea i wish thats what it was. Then another co worker adds, oh no her face is just red, she always gets a red face when i talk to her... like ok then. Just annoys me
Wow, you actually had cystic acne. Usually when you see people on social media talking about their acne it’s usually just a few red spots but you actually had cystic acne. I used to have really bad acne, my whole face was blown up. So when I’d see people saying they have really bad acne and there’s nothing in comparison it’s annoying so it’s refreshing to actually see someone not lying about it lol
We really need to hype Jessicas videos up! I think they need to be seen by the whole industry. So much wrong with people’s conception of what is okay or helpful to say to others. Love the commentary Jessica! 👏 Also how you are clearly not all negative and always point out the positive aswell.
Very true. I heard a lot of these types of comments from the agent I had when I was getting into modeling - sadly, the show does demonstrate a lot of what is said in the industry.
I find myself shouting "Jessica!!!" So much when I watch your videos, you are HILARIOUS naturally I've damn near watched all your videos, I'm surprised I haven't seen this one. You brighten my day
The damage this show did to so many young girls (including myself) watching at home. Watching you tear down the ludicrousness of the so called "critiques" cured my inner child who would go look in the mirror after watching this show and tug on my body fat in disgust.
the more I watch this episode the more enraged I get. they are legit accusing that girl of making herself sick since she was in the bathroom so long. this is SO relatable for anyone in the ED community. I can distinctly remember my “friends” in middle school making jokes about the same thing when we went out to eat and I returned from the bathroom with a toothpick picking my braces. They legit accused me of making myself sick and laughed about it, like I was the butt of the joke. Such disgusting behavior, I hope these girls have all grown up since then and this girl got the help she needed ..♥️
I just can not believe,,,, I used to watch those shows ( before I had my kids),,,, it’s like a flashback, all familiar faces,,, why suddenly, after all these years I am watching it!!!!
ALL these women are gorgeous they don't need makeup to look good. I don't understand how they could put them down for the most stupid stuff. This show is crazy and what those girls go through for it is horrible.
This whole episode was basically "screw natural beauty we were kidding you're all ugly" or "no one can show confidence in themselves or struggle with it except Tyra but we'll exploit them anyways"
I wish they could make EVERYONE go on show without makeup and show the “DIFFERENCE” between the models and the judges and I wish they could show “THEIR” example of the perfect face condition and pose/composition and then say what they did better 😂💀
Honestly, Cassie's situation was poorly handled, Tyra didn't even bother to help her, but instead decided to make a terrible storyline just create some drama. Even the episode after she was sent home, a clip at the beginning of the next episode was playing with Tyra saying how much she wanted to help her and how much she was worried about Cassie's eating disorders... But never did anything about it, smh
Same. Never had problems with acne before I turned 26. I'm turning 29 in 2 months, and the acne has never been worse. Did almost not believe it, when my doctor told me, it actual was considered "normal" for women to experience sudden getting acne around the late twenties and in the thirties due to hormonel changes.
I had similar problems with cystic acne, it was so hard because I was advised to avoid makeup but when I didn’t wear makeup I felt ugly and people kept asking me about it and it was honestly hell for a while. Like you said if we could choose, no one would ever choose to have acne and most of the time most people who have acne are already doing their best. Thank you for sharing your experience it makes me feel less alone
The feedback they give is so random because all the contestants look absolutely gorgeous to me. This show is so upsetting to watch. I especially hate that clearly the only purpose of the retouching was to have a "shocking" reveal when some of them are done way more than others
This was hard to watch. I can't believe how awfully they bring them down. I hope those judges are ashamed of themselves. I love your commentary btw you're funny!
I have struggled with acne for about 11 years. And like you said I did everything imaginable to clear my skin. What I would rather hear from people instead of their unsolicited advice is “Hey you look pretty no matter what!” I don’t think people understand that every time they advise you on how to fix your skin, you are saying their is something wrong with the way they look. My self esteem has suffered greatly because of it so keep that in mind before you consider telling someone to wash their face. I can guarantee they already do.
Sad how they judged Kelle's photo as "bland" when they quite literally blurred out all the drama and character from her expression. She is a striking woman of colour so not sure what they were expecting when they attempted to soften those features.
19:11 Bro, same. There's nothing worse than people who have NEVER had acne trying to give acne ""advice"" which boils down to victim-blamey tones of "it's your fault for eating a single pizza slice" No BlTCH, my skin is just like that. Also, on the point of people with acne being "dirty." I would argue it's the exact opposite. People with bad skin wash their face even MORE, while people who just naturally don't have acne will go "meh I don't wanna wash my face I'm going to bed." Which is the most frustrating part. These people are just born with different skin, put in the SMALLEST amount of effort, and then blame you for your bad skin because "well I do almost nothing and mine is good, so clearly YOU'RE doing something wrong!"
I got the "Just drink more water" from my own mother today about my skin breakout 😂 so frustrating, especially since I drink tons of water and always have. I think people are deliberately ridiculous sometimes like they don't think and just say anything.
*I stopped watching America’s top model when i was like 8 or 9 because my mom didn’t like how judgmental they were on women who wanted to model. It was unrealistic and very critical. And it broke down women’s unique personalities.*
I love this concept and how you add a sane and realistic voice to all of this. And that you see it from the girls' POV, like no one had their back if the edit was against them. It's a pretty big piece of karma that Tyra, Nigel, Janice etc has to live with the fact that that they behaved like this. It's embarrassing. Shame on them.
It’s crazy they criticize that one girl for wanting to get into apparel manufacturing even though they hound the girls about only having 10 good years as a model if they’re lucky. What are they supposed to do after that? They’re not allowed to plan an inevitable career shift?
I've done it all. I've just washed with water, given up and not washed at all, had a 10 step routine, everything and it doesn't matter for cystic acne because it's hormone caused. Water doesn't help, sleep doesn't help, you have to just wait out the breakout. Some food changes made it less often but I'm 27 and still get cystic breakouts on my jaw around my period. It is what it is.
Models can't have true confidence because then they can't be manipulated. She needs to ooze confidence in photos but God FORBID she actually have any irl.
The girl that got kicked off knew she was out and her face said it all. Good for her! She realized she didn't have anything more to gain from being there and was deadass ready to gtfo and get to work on her real goals. 💪🏻
I’m 38 now but when I was 15/16 - I had terrible acne - a boy in youth group told me to take off my mask isn’t wasn’t Halloween anymore - I still remember that to this day! It hurt that bad! I also started wearing heaps of foundation after that. Until 30 - I thought about my skin all the time!
Watch Tyra interview and “confront “ Naomi Campbell. She sounds like a whiny spoiled over sensitive child and Naomi just goes with the flow and pretends she has no recollection of any of the small crap Tyra is holding on to. Very satisfying to watch
I’ve had cystic and hormonal acne since I was a teenager. I’ve tried so many medications, topicals, creams- spent so much time in dermatologist offices trying to get it under control and this show (because I watched it growing up and was so into it) really messed with my head. I was so embarrassed of my skin for so long but yeah, people have blemishes and it’s not a big deal.
I know right? For someone who wouldn't even look beautiful without any makeup to attack a bunch of girls who definitely do look beautiful without it like that, the nerve.
@@Sunflower_Cats Improve, NOT cure. Also the majority of people in modern day have a Vit D deficiency, and as someone who had one for years, it certainly didn't cure my depression or suicidal ideations. Research has shown it can help REDUCE depression in people with mild cases, curing however is not a thing that vitamins or sun can do. It's ridiculous and reeks of toxic positivity, but sadly people keep acting like its so easy. (this is not towards you btw)
@Bella Secrets legit! I admittedly have TERRIBLE skin- scarring, acne, rosacea, just everything and I swear down, if I drink 2-3 litres of water- my skin is so much better the next day
Admitting that your entire world doesn't revolve around modeling always seems to be the kiss of death for these girls. Without fail, when one of them says that they're interested in other things, within an episode or two, they're eliminated.
Tyra had commented, about one of the girl once, that "she needed more grooming." 😳If that doesn't say it all, idk what does! They want these girls to be willing to sacrifice, to do anything &everything they're told, without question. Those that do, qualify to be used &abused, like the good little modeling slaves the industry wants; probably pimped out to a prince or two somewhere over in the Middle East before their career is up. Those that have a standards, morals, or even just a solid backbone... "Well, I'm sorry, but we just don't need that kind of attitude around here. Your self-worth is getting in the way of our profits."
"As a woman of colour you need to wear more makeup... our skin absorbs the light," what kind of nonsense is that?! Bloody hell we look beautiful with and without makeup. She literally projects the outdated negative stereotypes that black people are ugly/undesirable by saying that. I can only imagine what my younger self thought when I heard this
Y’all forget that she comes from a different era and that this was filmed in the early 2000s. Many Blk women had problematic sentiments, especially those older than her i.e her mother. Let’s not blame her for possibly internalizing anti Blk sentiments in an anti Blk society. Blk women still say shxt like this today even when it comes to “good hair bad hair.” The self righteous rhetoric is almost insufferable 🤦🏾♀️
I don’t like Tyra but there was a challenge for them to do their own make up for panel. They just could barely see any on Kelle that’s why she said that. She wasn’t telling her she has to wear make up.
@@crazycatlady7866 it wasn't ok, but it was definitely more accepted. I was in high school in the '00s and it was a truly garbage time. There was a lot of focus on being flawless and cool, and giving tough love to those who weren't. Mean Girls was popular because it resonated deeply with a lot of us and our experiences. ANTM was pretty widely loved and respected by a lot of people when it came out and even I, who was bullied relentlessly, didn't sit there and think "well, this is toxic". It was just par for the course, and what you needed to do to be cool. I look back on this show now through Jessica's videos, and Brad Mondo's videos, and it makes my blood boil. I want to jump in front of those girls and defend them with my life.
The judges are just unnecessarily vicious. They are literally the embodiment of the worst side of the modelling industry. I get its cut throat, but just because Tyra had a tough time, doesn’t mean every model needs to hit rock bottom to prove themselves. It seems more like a ‘let’s push them to their limits until they break and realise they’re not cut out for modelling’ rather than lets nurture and give these aspiring models the tools they need to excel in the industry.
Eva was going to win this season. At the start of the competition, the first question on this show is, Why do you want to be a model? And Eva's response was "I'm here because I want to be famous" She brought her A game and was going to win by any means.
Same. To the point to where I would see other people and point out their flaws. I changed that point of view from me when I was 24. I hated doing that and it was for show like this.
@@KarinaGarcia-nk7kv Aww, that's so sad. I really hope she is doing okay now. And the trauma from this whole situation isn't still harming her self esteem in any way.
@@BratzRockAngels Kelle did an interview with the RU-vidr Oliver Twixt some time ago and she seems really well-adjusted and successful now. She looks exactly the same too.
Even first watching this season when I was younger I thought Kelly was so beautiful. She also seemed like such a sweet person. I’m glad she’s ok after everything they did to her.
I cannot believe we watched this as young women and thought this was legitimate in any way. This show is disgusting. It needs to be wiped from history. Every person on that judge panel should be ashamed of themselves for their bullying behavior. You can even see the models absorbing this energy as they “help”(gossip about) the model who is struggling with an eating disorder. What an nightmare.
I was thinking the same, now years later when I'm a case manager at behavioral health and trying to help young women that have major self esteem issues I look back at this and its like "god to think I ever wanted to be on that show". Cause yes at one time I hoped I could lose enough weight and maybe do something like that, never happened and honestly glad for it! I can't believe I watched as many seasons of it as I did, I refuse to watch any of the current stuff and haven't watched it for about 10 years, best decision really.
Some of the stuff was absolutely ridiculous on the show but at the same time, this isn’t an easy field to try to get in especially at this time, so in that sense, they were being realistic to how brutal people in this industry can be.
I had the same thought. How are you supposed to take a critique of your natural beauty and use it to make yourself more naturally beautiful!? This isn't The Swan. I think this is a real life Mean Girls show. They just tear these ladies down and make the entire world feel like fake is best and aging is beneath them. I bet all of these ladies need a lot of therapy after the show. I can't believe I used to watch Tyra. She is a HORRIBLE influence on females of all ages.
No, we should not wipe it from history, because then people wouldn't have anything to learn from, such as how accepting we (general "we") were of toxic behaviors...just ten years ago, and how far we still have to go, along with how to identify and call out such behaviors (and logical fallacies). Wiping off unpleasantries of the past is just editing and sanitizing history, which would be irresponsible, dishonest, and EXACTLY the same as teaching farce history. Just because we dislike an event in history, it doesn't mean that we should be weak and take the easy way out: erasing it.
Tyra is such a good example of a narcissist and you can tell that she's actually very insecure about herself and masking it by putting everyone else down so she can be on top. She's so dramatic it actually helped me recognise toxic behaviours when they're not on paper only. Her gaslighting is just *chef's kiss*. I still can't believe how could she get away with such blatant bullying for so long... And thank you Jessica for opening up about your acne problem. I've always admired your skin and it surprised me that you struggle with the same condition I do. It had to take a lot of courage to show the pictures - and you're still beautiful on them but now I have even more respect for you. Go queen!
Because back in the early 2000, starting with Simone Cowell, the bullying and blatant mean-ness was so in. Everyone on TV wanted to be some version of that and people ate it up..I was always aware of that. Even if you watch the Den of dragons, forgot his name but the call him “Mr. Wonderful” he is so mean, and once called this brown girl a “cockroach”.
Yeah, season 4 before Tyra has her meltdown on Tiffany, she's hugging her and supporting her, pretending to care. I know a narcissist and it's the same. They "help" others so it gives them an ego boost, but will flip out and abuse that person the next minute
I agree! Tyra is not what she used to appear as. Also cystic acne is physically painful and scars easily. So it can be hard to cover. It’s horrible when you get them.
These girls already felt insecure going into this photoshoot - and then to have the judges (Especially Janice) almost recoil in disgust to the majority of them when their untouched photos were revealed? Absolutely disgusting behaviour. This challenge would only further implement unachieveable beauty standards
@@jasonvargas7564 this season was filmed 17 years ago and people have been extremely bored during lockdown so Tyra has already been dragged and cAnCeLlEd on Twitter
I literally don’t understand their criticism on Yaya’s skin. She has no hyperpigmentation, just mild texture- she’s freaking GLOWING. I’ve never seen such an out of touch and insufferable group of ppl in one room.
This judge is making fun and provocating that girl for no reason. I mean Hitchcock movie, really? Then the girl responds very kindly and gets bullied for doing so. I would say them to piss off. I wouldn’t let myself to be bullied like that, even if that would be my biggest dream.
I wish they did a photoshoot where they centred around their ‘flaws.’ Like acne or dark circles. I think they would feel more comfortable in their own body too!
I know that it's pretty painful I kinda honestly feel it too, but this "reality show" judges just focuses on slight imperfections and make a big deal out of it. Just take it as a grain of salt.
when i was younger and struggled with acne, i would have loved to see someone with the same struggles feeling confident and strong. it would have made my teenage years a lot simpler
yesss, i wish more people understood that having acne doesn't mean you're unhygenic. acne is a highly heritable condition, and you can't control whether you get it or not
I can’t believe I used to look up to Tyra as a kid, I was an avid watcher of ANTM from elementary to high school and I was a HUGE fan of Tyra. Now as a 28 year old and seeing how problematic this show was and Tyra was it’s shocking. Like Tyra was just a straight up gaslighter and bully throughout this series
I remember watching an episode of ANTM with my mom when I was in elementary school and she changed the channel halfway through the episode because she didn't like the way Tyra was gaslighting the girls in the form of "constructive criticism." I'm glad Tyra Banks has all but faded into obscurity and is irrelevant now.
@@brett8460 I was so tired of her behaviour on the show, many many years ago, that I actually googled 'Tyra Banks ridiculous' just like that. I was very surprised and very happy at the same time, seeing the search results, because that way I realized most people disgread with the way she treated people ( and the world is made mostly of nice people :) ).
I liked the show when I was a kid until she made fun of a girl for having a gap between her teeth. It lowered my confidence and the next time I went to the dentist, I asked them for braces. The dentist said my gap is natural and that my teeth are very straight. Braces aren't necessary. It took me years to finally accept my gap.
Yes ! Yes! Yes! I agree. Completely looked up to her and watching this back now I am absolutely appalled 😳 This show probably contributed toward my insecurities growing up..
Remember when Tyra was caught unawares at the beach and a paparazzi got her at a bad angle, and there was at LEAST an entire episode on her talk show to explain away how that photo wasn’t accurate and she literally came out on stage in the “same” swimsuit. Insanity.
That sounds an awful lot like someone was playing the Blame Game 🤔 The fact she came out in the same swimsuit to prove... whatever, who cares... is actually just sad. ANTM is just 2 decades of Tyra violently projecting her insecurities onto younger women.
Oh yes- the “kiss my fat a$$” monologue. She said “on behalf of all the girls who get teased” when she’s tearing down beautiful girls like it doesn’t matter unless it’s her
I think the difference is that Tyra was at the beach being a normal person not a model....these girls are on a show about being a MODEL! Do you think the fashion world is nice or kind? Tyra was giving the the same energy they would get for the rest of there time in the buisness. It's not for the weak as it's been said by multiple models over the years it's not something for people with thin skins
Sadly she valued profit and ratings more than making a change in the modeling industry, which she could've done. At this time she was the most popular model, TV was huge back then, and Tyra could've changed those standards, having done that she'd have been considered a pioneer in promoting positive changes in fashion unrealistic standards But she didn't, and now she faces backlash literally everywhere, she's not respected in the fashion industry and people don't want to see her in TV any more. That's her karma, she preferred profit (short term) over doing something significant (longterm) that would have improved the careers of many upcoming models.
Insecure people shouldn't be in an industry at judges you on your beauty, and they definitely shouldn't be on a reality TV show judges you on your beauty. If you're insecure somethings just aren't for you.
@@theshadowfax239 You are right but I also think the modelling industry in general needs to reevaluate it’s principals, or just cease to exist, it’s pointless anyway.
@@dynamopirate470 I thought the exact same thing. There was a season where the girl was an absolute doll ( and tallented, she was already modelling before the show ). And Tyra just invented some bull**** theory to make her lose the chalenge, like, "you didn´t obey to lens", something 'creative' like that. I was actually angry, because of the hipocrisy.
One of the worst things about this episode to me is that we actually get to see how much they lighten up the darker models' skin. Yaya is one of my all time favorites, she's such a gorgeous woman and her retouched photo is like 3 tones lighter than she is in real life and it's such a shame
To me it just looked like they made it brighter, not lighter. There was more shine to it in the places where the light was shining and the skin was smoother. They also made a comment on how she needed to drink more water. Drinking a lot of water improves the skin and makes it look brighter.
Let me correct Tyra: you don’t have to wear MORE makeup as a woman of color, you have to wear higher pigmented colors. But there’s no need to cake foundation and concealer and blush on a naturally pretty even toned face.
I don't even know what she means by WOC need more makeup. Like, what would that do? She says darker skin tones absorb the light not reflect it. So, is she saying she needs lighter skin? Tyra is aweful
@@bonniegomez5333 She probably is jealous. I definitely wouldn't be surprised. I always believed that Paulina lady to be jealous of one model named Celia. I don't remember the season, but Celia was 24 and being called the young Paulina. She had been winning challenges several weeks in a row, and in the middle of a shooting, Paulina interrupted to bring Celia to the side and tell her that she was too old to start modeling. When Celia went back to finish her shoot, she had trouble and did poorly!
This. You should see the amount of makeup white people (men and women) need to wear any time they go on TV or perform on stage. Without it we look like ghosts.
The way they treat these models is just sick. Acting like their natural skin is shocking and disgusting? Literally recoiling and pretending they 'can't look'? Every person on this panel should be ashamed of themselves for trying to make young women think that the way they exist naturally is disturbing. Just wrong. Also, as a person who had cystic acne for around a year and have next to no photos of myself from that time because of it, I just want to commend you for how brave you were to share your story and videos. It can be so demoralizing, but there is nothing wrong with having it!
Seriously!! This could've been a good message, where they judge all the photos and they're all great and no one gets eliminated because natural beauty is different but still beautiful. THAT would've been the way to go about this. But it's Tyra, so of course it's demeaning and toxic
@@lenabeans I think it’s a window into what the modelling industry was like then (and maybe still is; I don’t pay attention to it). Tyra lacked the imagination and backbone to challenge it.
@@julierose2398 The thing is though ANTM focuses on looks more than modeling vs Australia's Bext Top Model which was mor about modeling. Modeling is more about fit. Tyra was just doing the most for ratings. I mean it was on UPN/CW vs Fox or CBS
It’s so scary how abusive this show is! Kelle has such beautiful skin. I can’t believe they kept switching back and forth from the retouched photo and the unretouched photo. Poor girl! I can’t believe they attacked her confidence like that! Their behavior is disgusting!
When Nigel said the “cure” was “water water water”, I had to pause and walk away for a minute. Having struggled with acne for 34 STRAIGHT years this was so triggering, heartless, and completely ignorant. Ranks right up there with the person who told me that I had such bad acne because I ate pizza. …, right
I hear ya sister! I have severe acne at 42, on my face chest, back and arms, and the only thing that has helped me is birth control pills; but not everyone can or wants to take it. Even then, my skin still breaks out a little, not as bad though thankfully. I have been on a lot of treatments from the dermatologist but I also have allergies and other issues so it’s complicated. I actually am mostly raw and plant-based, exercise, meditate, get outside everyday, take supplements, use natural products, drink lots of water and still struggle with bad skin, irritable bowel and bipolar anxiety and depression. My husband eats pizza and french fries, never drinks water, no depression, and never breaks out. Water can help some people with bad diets, but its more than that. There can be hormonal issues, or like me acne can be hereditary. Anyway, everybody has a struggle, I get my clear skin from a bottle of foundation and keep it moving.
@@heyalexiajanee it's your hormones. Talk to your doctor to see if you have PCOS. It can cause your hormones to go crazy and birth control usually helps. I have it. But honestly. Just keep your skin dry. And understand it might never go away until you have menopause.
This is INSANE. The judges literally cannot handle someone questioning them. Tyra and her posse created this show so they could have their egos boosted. They needed someone to want their validation as much as they’ve strived for it in their careers. Tyra’s opinions are completely unwarranted. This is a game for them. This is Tyra’s game. It’s not about the models, it’s not about their careers or helping them. This is “the most dangerous game:” let me invite you to my private island and you feel special and in exchange you let me hunt you for fun.
Ok but the woman that said it “looked like a Hitchcock film” is so unprofessional. She was literally making fun of her. That is not how you act in life or on television. This show really should never have existed
Why is it the ultimate betrayal to Tyra for the girls to want to do something else other than dedicate their life to modelling? It would be so inspiring to hear their hopes and aspirations and should be celebrated on the show
Considering Tyra was also a show host and had her own MLM 😂 hypocrisy at its finest. I bet she wouldn’t say that to Cara Delevingne or Hollywood starts’ kids 🤦🏼♀️
If I remember correctly, there were at least 2 other seasons where Tyra would do an episode dedicated to the careers the girls wanted after modeling. She would lecture them about how it was important to have a future plan because modeling was a short-term career in your 20s, and also make it an excuse to attention-whore her talk show or “music” career or whatever else she was playing at.
Tyra explains several times that there are other girls who dreamed to be in place of girls who weren’t there 100 percent. She was validated in what you call a “betrayal”.
This might be the worst episode ever. The judges are just awful and rotten people. Watching them belittle and ridicule these beautiful women for their natural (and AMAZING!!) skin makes me sick to my stomach. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I think this season was one of the worst seasons. There was also an episode where a model complained of sexual harassment but nothing was done…. and she was forced to hang out with those modes after the shoot.
Now I know why Naomi Campbell couldn't stand Tyra Banks. "We're gonna judge how bad your skin is, because our clients do not wish to pay too much for retouching your photos." As if the models actually could make their skin look better at the snap of their fingers. Downright terrible.
Naomi didn’t care for Tyra because the industry made it seem like Tyra was the new young Naomi. Tyra isn’t perfect but neither is Naomi she threw a phone at her assistant. Both are narcissistic
As someone who struggles with disordered eating this is a huge nightmare, I dont blame Amanda for telling, but she shouldve told a producer only not the other models and the producers shouldve gotten Cassie therapy and helped her through this. Turning it into the topic dujour and a gossip-y thing is so messed up
Absolutely! The damage this whole incident would have done, it just cemented her ed and made her defensive. I have a feeling Amanda probably did and the producer thought "ooh story line, go tell the others". Nothing would surprise me with this show, especially as no one appeared to step in to help her at the time and instead watched it all unfold. Nobody thought to intervene or edit it out, just let it go live. Sorry you struggle too, it does get better 🥰 5 years and still going x
Yeah, it was a mess. I definitely agree with not totally blaming amanda, from what I saw I really think she and most of the other models were genuinely worried. They definitely turned it into gossip, which isn't right, but I can't get mad at them when it seems they had good intentions. I'm just disappointed in the people filming the conversation, not editing out, turning it into drama, etc.
Amanda to producers: Cassie told me she has bulimia. I think she needs help. Nigel at elimination: So Cassie, we heard you have an eating disorder... Try drinking more water!
The hypocrisy.. They tell the girls to have confidence, yet when someone says “I’m this beautiful person” oh no get them out of there. Can’t have that level of confidence here
I will never get over on how they made Kelle so self conscious about herself that she CRIED when looking at herself in the mirror. Especially since Kelle is GORGEOUS
She was one of the prettiest girls in this season and they made her feel so insecure-she actually was a good model and she really wanted to try so hard. I really felt for her.
It was like they targeted her until they eliminated her. Her and Tocara, because if I remember they always made Tocara be the large animal in the photo shoots and they made her be gluttony in another one but she was also gorgeous.
It took me until I was 25 to realize how toxic this show & “judges” were. Shame on Tyra & the rest of these grown adults for how they were to these impressionable girls. I cannot imagine the trauma & unlearning these girls had to go through once they got home. I hope that they were unable to learn that physical beauty is the most important thing & to look for validation from others. I am still trying to unlearn these things & I was just a viewer of the show. Truly a toxic show & atmosphere to be around. Really wish all these people would take responsibility on their bullying & negativity. I really appreciate your videos & how you are helping girls to realize this isn’t how they should be treated or judged. You are a true role model. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Agree with you so much. The show is toxic, the judges are awful to the girls and Tyra is a toxic, fake person. I didn’t see it when I was younger watching it, but watched some when I got older and I could see right through her. After hearing stories from some of the women on that show confirming how awful the experience was for them, I can’t stand Tyra.
Not sure if she's just acting for the show or these were the standards she grew up with while she was still modelling. Pretty sure she had her fair share of critical judgements in her heydays of modelling. Depends on how you look at it, it could be that she's just prepping these younger women for the harsh realities of the modelling world or she's really just this type of person. I'm hoping it's the former. But its true that in an industry where looks is everything, if you have imperfections in your appearance, either you are going to try improving on your imperfections or you can switch to a career where your success doesnt have to depend on your looks. But if she's really just a shallow person overall she would have been replaced as a judge few seasons ago. This is just my 2 cents.
I watched some, thought it was fun at first, but after a lot of time seeing clips and interviews, this show really is toxic AF I mean they made a girl strip naked even though she was uncomfortable, another had to do a photoshoot about drug overdose AFTER learning her closest friend had died of a drug overdose through phone call, then giving them makeovers that most of the time are terrible.
Also 25 and same. As a kid, I was unable to see the narcissism. I binged this and her talk show and I feel like I could’ve done something better with my young mind. It’s no question why some girls come out the show disliking Tyra.
Tyra's self-hatred of her own Blackness in this era was heavily projected on to Black contestants on the show. When she says to Yaya "I didn't know you could look so soft", it implicates the stereotype of Black women being rough around the edges, and too rugged to fit into the Eurocentric beauty standard. Also, when she tells Kelle that as a darker skinned woman she needs to wear more make-up because "our skin does not reflect light," was such BS. Kelle's shots in the photoshoot were stunning and the soft lighting played very well onher skin tone.Tyra was honestly one of the worst role models for Black women and girls in the mid-2000s, despite her obvious commercial success.
This is why I prefer Naomi Campbell because unlike tyra. She actually made black women feel confident and beautiful. Trya did the opposite. Her comments are actually disgusting.
I agree. Tyra’s comment about dark-skinned people having to wear more makeup is an example of colorism. It’s such a shame and sad. The judges on this show are absolutely horrid!
“Our skin absorbs light”.. we’re not fabric?! Like does she not know that skin doesn’t work the same way as for example a black vs. white t-shirt??? Black women are literally glowing. What a dangerous stigma for Tyra to be sending out on Primetime television.
I mean, you don’t blurt that kind of thing out in any job interview. When you’re up against a dozen people who’ll stick around longer (and therefore be a better return on the employer’s investment), saying that kind of thing gives the employer a reason to eliminate you from the running.
To be an intelligent, and have a future over 30 if your lucky. You tell the models to be confident in the photo shoot, but god forbid feeling good about yourself. That is exactly why you had a young girl with bulimia.
