Anton Bruckner (4 September 1824 - 11 October 1896) was an Austrian composer known for his symphonies, masses, and motets. The first are considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character, and considerable length. Bruckner's compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies.

Symphony No. 0, in D minor ("Die Nullte"), WAB 100 (c. 1863)
1. Allegro (0:00)
2. Andante (14:37)
3. Scherzo. Presto - Trio. Langsamer und ruhiger (27:44)
4. Finale. Moderato (34:26)
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink
Description by Wayne Reisig [-]
The curious numeration of Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 0 would imply that its composition preceded his First (1868). Yet its date is ambiguous. It is most generally agreed that its genesis was in 1863 and it was substantially revised into its definitive form in 1869, after Bruckner had made the significant acquaintance of Beethoven's Ninth. In its first rehearsal by the Vienna Philharmonic, conductor Otto Dessoff, upon examining the first movement, asked where the main theme was. This was all it took for the sensitive composer to shelve the work until the penultimate year of his life. Although reluctant to include the symphony in his official canon, he was hesistant to discard it altogether and thus appended the curious designation for which it is famous, along with the words "only an attempt."
It shows many anticipations of Bruckner's mature style and the composer used the work as a sort of thematic woodshed for the creation of subsequent works. The scurrying opening motive is so unusual that it is understandable that Dessoff could not identify it as a theme. The overall harmonic layout is strikingly similar to the opening of the Third Symphony, also in D minor. The second theme is similar in mood to that of the Seventh Symphony, its lyricism set against a softly tread march. What is unusual is the brief reappearance of the opening theme before the third theme is stated, a typical Brucknerian hymn-theme. Anticipation of the Third Symphony can be heard in the development, where a whirlwind transformation of the main theme vies with a chorale-like transformation of the other themes. The recapitulation already reveals Bruckner's tendency to telescope this section while avoiding verbatim restatement. The beginning of the coda uses a motive heard later in the Sixth Symphony and the Te Deum. The second movement is more in the mood of an andante than a typical Bruckner adagio, although it does unfold at a leisurely pace. In song form, a hymn-like theme alternates with lighter lyrical one. Most conspicuously absent is the working up to a steeple-like climax present in all of Bruckner's slow movements from the Third on. The following scherzo is neither heavy-footed nor Valkyrie-like, but shows the influence of Schubert's symphonic scherzi, while the trio is chromatic in a way somewhat different from Bruckner's later style. A brooding introduction over pulsating woodwinds opens the finale, with the first theme proper bursting forth forte in unison, quite similar to the opening of Beethoven's Ninth. The second theme is unusual for being mercurial, a mood rare in any Bruckner, but the typical "gesangperiod" follows in the third theme. The development shows many Brucknerian devices including insistent unisons and trailing woodwind figurations. Again the recapitulation is terse. A brief diminuendo precedes the short vigorous coda, not yet the deliberate inexorable buildup against a reverberating tonic typical of the composer. None the less, the "Zero" symphony is a worthy work in perspective, accepted as part of the canon with the other nine.

I first discovered Bruckner when I was 19 years old in 1980 while I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison music school. I was the auxiliary double bassist for the Symphonic Band. Yes, Band!! Wind Ensembles and Bands have double bass parts written in. It was the first movement of Bruckner's 4th and obviously it was a transcription for Band. After the first rehearsal, I promptly went to the record store and bought a Bruckner complete symphonies set by Chicago/Barenboim. I immediately became a Brucknerite. I've always come back to Sym. 0 and have always loved it. It was composed between his first and second symphony, yet he threw it away as a failed attempt. Over the past 37 years since I first heard it, I have found it to be quite unfortunate that it has had that moniker.

I was 20 years old in 1958 when I discovered his 9 th symphonie, and how older I became how more I loved all his symphonies, his masses and the marvelous string quintet.

Tout le "grand" Bruckner est déjà ici en gestation. Partition étonnante... Sans doute d'une originalité déconcertante pour l'époque où elle a surgi... Une premiere (seconde) des onze merveilles.

I've been watching all of your videos with the autograph scores. here's what I've noticed: Bruckner is a very economical orchestrator. Even in the much higher number symphonies, the same economy is evident. It's beautiful to study these originals because a modern score is printed with all parts, but the originals show the thought process. The missing doubled parts, the repeat signs (%), the cross-outs... it's all there. One can also learn orchestration and progress with Bruckner from symphonies 0 to 9. He's an orchestration course unto himself!

Affascinanti i tempi estremi. Risentire quest'opera ,dopo molto tempo,mi ha impressionato. Complimenti per le note esplicative che accopagnano questo video.

Harry Andruschak I'd pretty much dismissed #0. But you're right. This is the fourth time I've listened to it, I think. First time I've listened to it ! So beautiful. And all those building blocks are there. Bruckner can blow you away. And I love that. But now what I love most are those introspective, or deeply contemplative, and/or prayerful passages. Vastly overlooked.

If you experience this, so called "Zero" Symphony, you may notice that while the first 2 movements may have religious underpinnings, the last 2 are a veritable orgasm! Behold the way that the scherzo jumps around. And the finale, with its orgiastic outbursts and snappy, sudden D major ending! This bespeaks a truly excited kid! You can have the somber seriousness and attempt to answer impossible existence questions as expressed in his last 3, but, at the age of 77, I'll take the youthful thrill of this one!

They had no trouble in renumbering Dvorak's symphonies. Bruckner composed 11. Just number the F minor # 1, this one # 2 and add 2 to the 9 numbered ones. It's that simple and only fair. Just because Bruckner, a fanatically religious peasant and a frustrated bachelor, wished to repudiate the sexually suggestive aura of his early symphonies doesn't negate 2 of his most thrilling expressions and deny them a number.

Who needs a theme? The music just seems to flow and the listener is swept along with it. Pity the young Anton listened to that moronic conductor . Im sure with the right encouragement he would have revised it and it would have become a standard repertoire piece. It's a wonderful work.

I really like this piece as I do with all of Bruckner’s symphonies, but there is something slightly unfinished sounding about it compared to his others. A basic simplicity of texture, almost minimalist. In a way it has very modern resonances in that regard.

@carlconnor5173
@carlconnor5173 7 лет назад
Upon further rehearing, and patiently actually listening, there's too much beauty to dismiss it as an attempt. Certainly not a polished, finished Symphony, But much more than an attempt.
@bartjebartmans
@bartjebartmans 6 лет назад
Give it a few more listens and you will find out what a great symphony this is. Bruckner tells his own story, just like in his other symphonies. To me that's all that matters.
@howardmcclellan6344
@howardmcclellan6344 6 лет назад
Some of his later "official" symphonies are not without problems - No.3 (many revisions), No.4 (more revisions than any of them). Just sit back and enjoy the shear beauty of the music. By the way, there is a particular fine passage in the middle of the first movement of No.0 - full of nature... This Symphony is more than just an attempt - the F minor (Study), perhaps, but not this one.
