Reicha also wrote some excellent - and rather daring, for his time - string quartets

this orchestra makes a clean job of this rarely performed piece without enhancing some of its real surpises or indeed taking more than a standard approach to the tempi of the last two movements, an allegro as minuet and un poco vivo in the 2/4 finale. A slight pity as the sound of the period instruments allows for more wit, colour and transparency. Not quite such a discovery then as some of Reicha's chamber music but a good glimpse into his post-Haydn symphonic world, a parisian visiting card?

this is lovely; kind of old-fashioned though for 1803?

Not really, only Beethoven was just way ahead of everyone else.

all worthwhile sources point that this symphony, along with the (lost? simply unrecorded?) op 42, was written in 1799 at the latest, but what the other guy says still stands true: Even B's first symphony, written a mere two years after this one, is ahead of the game

Reicha was at the moment as important as Beethoven. This symphony shows this. Beethoven was 33 years old and already showed romanticism, Reicha is purely classical.

Labels enable stables and fables playing into the hands of the businesses that control music distribution and have themselves no love for music, seeing it entirely as a commodity like soap

I agree, and also the conditioning of the time. The court for example superdetermined on the taste, the editors followed the lighthouse of it. But there is also the fact that pure classicism was being replaced by the new, which had many rebellious features of what would be the next romanticism. Another issue is that much of what is dominant today was chosen by critics and musicologists from the high romanticism and early twentieth century.

@@marcosPRATA918 Beethoven was doing things that would and could only later be recognized as defining romantic elements. All composers did their own things and Reicha certainly had his own distinguishing traits. And Beethoven was still entirely a classical composer. I only think true romantic composers came after Beethoven.

@@lerippletoe6893 I agree, making the differentiation between the stylistic and elements elements and advances that anticipate of a following period is important. After all "a style brings in itself the germs of its own dissolution", which allows the total domination of the new.

Same year (and note) as LvB's "Eroica" symphony......but I can see this piece had been more popular than "Eroica" at the date. More traditional, more common, more noble, and less progressive. Even less progressive than late Mozart's.
