#AnythingForViews ... even when it comes to parenting! Today, we tackle the difficult conversation of child internet safety and the things parents will do for internet fame and $$$. Children have the right to privacy, peace, and the ability to forge their own path in this world... It is time we change the way we look at children's role in the digital world.
**Goes without saying but don't try to find any of these people, don't harass them, don't message them... I do not condone that behavior! Thank you**

Years ago, I took an FBI training that included analyzing seemingly innocent pics with children from a predator's perspective. It was a disturbing but educational experience. It convinced me that there is no such thing as a harmless image of a child.

@@tripendicular When my daughter was younger, I posted some pics of her on FB, but restricted visibility to close friends and family only. That's honestly what I would recommend to anyone. If I couldn't restrict it, I wouldn't post it. If I would be comfortable with that person being in my daughter's proximity, they can see pics. Otherwise, not a chance. At the same training, even back then, we were shown some of the horrific alterations done to or with children's images. While I understand it's not actually that child or a child at all, I just couldn't stand the idea of someone doing anything like that to an image of my child.
@DieAlteistwiederda

@@jolenejoleeene I've once accidentally came across those altered pics years ago when the internet was still a bit wilder with circulating the most horrific shit. I was about 16 back then and I will never be able to unsee this. I don't want kids but I'm an aunt of 4 and I made my two older siblings keep a tight grip on what they posted. My older brothers ex was a lot more free about what she posted of my two youngest nieces and I can still remember sitting her down and explaining to her in detail what people do with even the most innocent pictures. She was also posting less innocent stuff like bikini pictures on the beach which are of course completely harmless if you aren't a creep but she had it out there and not restricted. I'm 30 now and I have never shared a picture of any of these kids and would only consider it now for my oldest niece because she is 17 and can consent and my nephew who is 20 and an adult and obviously can consent too. I also don't post pictures of friends unless I've asked and deemed them safe and I routinely have always posted stuff privately. I really don't understand how people can be this free about their kids.

I am about to have my first child and I have wondered about how I am going to deal with this a lot. I don't have/ don't use any social media sites anymore. I mostly just use Pinterest and Twitter for my social media fix. I don't really post anything personal on either of those websites. I am worried about my mom and my mother-in-law posting pictures of my kids online. Especially my mother in law because she loves sharing her entire life online. I am wondering if I should ask my husband to speak with her about it or whether I should say something to her myself before the baby is even born or just wait until the bay is born and say that we prefer for our child's face to not be online. I am not sure how to approach her about it. She could post a picture that has my child in it, but their face isn't showing would be fine. Anyone have any good ideas of how to approach the topic and what to do if she gets offended? I guess I could always tell her that I am the parent and I am allowed to make rules for my children.

About 8 years ago when my son was 6, back in the day of CraigsList, I posted our bikes up for sale. I didn't think anything of it that my son was in the picture. I posted the photos and I immediately got a response back from a woman telling me to take the photos of my son down. She said it was the quickest way to get a predator over to my house pretending to be interested in the bikes. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I got chills. It had never occurred to me the danger I was putting my son in. I took the whole ad down and just donated the bikes. I am so grateful for this woman. She defined the way I parent and protect my son to this day. I pray more women and families listen to women like you. The protection of our children should be our #1 concern.

We have decided to do the same, I gave birth to our first several months ago. Try to do your best to communicate your wishes to your parents, if your partner is in the picture make sure his family is aware as well… we have run into issues with other people posting pictures of our little one. Not because they’re rebelling but because they forget, and deleting it is good but it’s never fully deleted… you never know the kinds of people who follow, even if the account is set to private. Often times there are people you know that are using these photos… wishing you the best. Sometimes you’ll feel “left out” because you don’t post baby but the cons definitely outweigh the pros.

These type of “parents” sincerely don’t care about their kids rights to privacy. (Thank God we were born before social media was around!). my impression is that they don’t realize their kids WILL grow up and be adults one day and won’t be happy about these postings, shared to the world. I’ve become more aware of that myself but still, it’s mind boggling how many parents don’t care about their kids privacy- they only care about THEIR own following, views and perceived fame 🙄😑

As a disabled person that statement boggled my mind. The kid is like 2 years old he barely has a personality, it’s okay if his chronic illness/disorder defines him at this stage in his life. It’s quite literally been his whole life up to this point. As he gets older it will become just a part of him as a person. But he’s literally a toddler. Name any toddler that doesn’t define themselves by one specific interest or character trait😂 children will typically do that till around age 6 or 7. It just felt so strange to use language that disabled adults have had to use to get BASIC respect for a child who barely knows who he is.

This issue of parents posting their nonconsenting children online is going to be one of the biggest blights on the Millennial generation as parents. In 10-15 years we will absolutely be seeing the documentaries and reading the tell alls of children who grew up with these parents, and I suspect many children will cut off their parents entirely. It’s horrific that we are just accepting this as normal in many cases. It truly feels like a minority of people have an issue with this.

12 minutes in and I already have SO MUCH I want to add: 1. As someone in the field of child development and a YT fan for the past 13 years, this particular topic is so important to me. In fact, I did a research proposal to measure the self esteem of kids of family vloggers in the future to see if this phenomenon will have any sort of impact on the kids. I strongly believe it will, but we don't currently have the science to back it up. If we do have the science, then we can push for stricter laws regarding influencer children. But unfortunately, a whole generation of kids will have to be sacrificed first before people will actually do anything. 2. The parents ABSOLUTELY know what they are doing when they post pics of their kids in the tub and eating hot dogs. They know. 3. The lack of internet safety awareness nowadays is actually insane! 12 year olds running around online blasting their age, location and face everywhere like it's no big deal! My boomer parents taught me to expose as little as possible about me online and they never even grew up with the internet! My elementary school computer class went over internet safety. What happened to millennial parents and school boards and adults in general that just let all of this slip through the cracks?

what happened to millennial parents? oh, but nothing dear... they just are still children themselves, so they couldn't be bothered with actual parenting... what happened to school boards? eh, that's a little more complex, but basically in the last few decades money and culture went down while childishness and bigotry (often disguised as some weird concept of politically correct) went up. 🤷‍♀ also, as long as they can do whatever they want without responsibilities and repercussions, the vast majority of people (parents included) simply couldn't care less about anything else... after all, we're just naked monkeys, in some ages and cultures it's a little more evident than in others. oh, before anyone loose their shit... no, this is not aimed to hurt or denigrate anybody in particular, I'm just a tired historian being dark and sarcastic on purpose...

And then these same kids actually end up thinking you're a creep if you don't have a carrd listing everything about yourself. And I say this as a person who is quite open online. I think maybe some millenial parents think that they were fine online back when it was the wild wild west, and surely their kids know cause they're able to be online more... or maybe these parents never had creepy encounters or didn't get sent shock websites with gore on the, by strangers so that they don't realise what can be out there.

Sentiments like that coming from (I'm assuming here) abled people usually end up being "stop using your disability/illness as an excuse" when they put that thinking into action. 😬 The reality is that many of us cannot live life the same way as those who are abled but that doesn't mean our illness or disability defines us. Ofc, I don't know anything more about this mother and the kid is still a toddler so I don't know if she's gonna be like that but all these phrases and words like 'differently abled' usually end up being ableism but with a positive-sounding twist to it.

@chilltheheckoutwithava1454 Год назад
I don’t like the term “differently abled” because to me it REEKS of toxic positivity. It’s ok to acknowledge when one has a disadvantage and then encourage them and build them up to overcome in the best way they can.

@DAVIDJONESLOCKER669 Год назад
@@chilltheheckoutwithava1454 exactly. I have a few issues piled ontop of each other. I am disabled. I need help for certain things, I have a cane for when I’m having a bad day. Back braces, braces for all my other joints if needed. I can still live life, I have my accommodations- but thats what is the key. Accommodations. I need them in order to function to my best and comfiest ability. If I was treated like an able bodied person, I would be in misery. Pain all the time, always sleeping, depressed, cranky. I would know, its how it was before my diagnosis 😂 its called a disability because you’re given the short end of the stick one way or the other; doesnt mean you deserve less, just means accommodations make you live a happier and better life. Calling it ‘differently abled’ makes me feel like youre (not you) bouncing around the fact that I am impaired in some way. Dont ignore my cane, or glorify it to make it seem like I prefer it this way

@DAVIDJONESLOCKER669
@DAVIDJONESLOCKER669 Год назад
@@Kayla_P99 Yeah. I have quite a few family members on the spectrum (getting evaluated myself). Autism does change how the brain thinks/the neurological pathways, and some things are ‘out of the box’-however, that doesn’t excuse any person from not following ‘basic’ etiquette or rules. There was a kid who used to flip people off on the bus all the time; he knew what he was doing. However, his parents always used his autism as the reason as to why he did that. Well, its up to you as the parent to teach him not to do that. Having a condition doesn’t excuse poor behavior (in most cases)

My son was diagnosed with a mental health disorder at 13. It was heart wrenching. I wrote a story about the road that led us there (mostly as a form of therapy). I shared it with my husband, my mom and in-laws. They told me I should make it public because it would destigmatize the diagnosis and could help someone else. I really struggled with it but ultimately decided that this is my son's story to share. Period. If he decides to share it someday- that's HIS decision. I always felt a little guilty about it. This video makes me feel so much better. If being selfish protects my son- so be it. My job is to protect him FIRST. Thanks for making this video

Thank you for talking about this- While social media came along when I was older (mainly took off in my teenage years) my late mother used to overshare medical information about me, and especially about my brother who is special needs. The fact that she had the audacity to say every little thing about my brother who still doesn't understand how social media really works and the consequences of it and even watching certain RU-vid channels, was alarming and a point of contention between me and her. I used to report her posts about my brother and got my friends to add her and do it as well, because she was exploiting my brother to get more sympathy on facebook. In terms of her sharing my medical information around 6/7 years ago now I actually got a friend of mine's parent involved who was a lawyer to write up a cease and desist to get her to stop posting private medical information about me because legally in my state once you are 16 your medical information is in relation to the child, not the parent. I would have pushed it to a lawsuit had she not stopped, but it was awful how manipulative she was to feel like it was okay to post private information about her kids for attention. -Just wanted to share my story.

I fully agree with you on this topic on an influencer level, but I really needed to hear this on a personal level also. my husband and I have always been split on whether or not to post our kids on our private social media accounts. he always wanted to keep them off while I thought being private was enough to make a post here and there just “showing them off” I guess. the reality is, we don’t know everyone that we’re friends with or following on a personal level and they could be apart of the large percentage of creeps online too. seeing influencers share their children’s private info with millions is a no-brainer in how wrong and disgusting that is, but we all need to look a little closer to home too. I now see how important this truly is, especially as someone that agrees that social media is awful in general. I've had "the talk" with my child. It was wayyyyy sooner than I expected but we've been having the conversation for years. Instead of waiting til I am ready or I think we should talk about it I just let my child come to me and they know if they are curious they can ask me anything and I will always answer honestly. We've had some very awkward conversations but it's actually been very helpful too. Instead of seeking info out online or from other kids (info that may or may not be accurate) my child comes to me and we talk about it from a safe and loving place. I keep it age appropriate by keeping it honest but good for their age and building as they grow and their questions become more targeted or complex. I heard once that its best to talk about things with your kid when they are ready not when you are ready. I've kept that in mind and it's been great for us so far.

The restaurant sex talk just pissed me the fuck off. That is child exploitation of the grossest caliber, and it does nothing but reinforce the idea that even your most private, personal experiences are entertainment fodder for a nameless, faceless horde of strangers to consume on their lunch break. Every single time that mother did a hair flip and smirked at the camera while filming the humiliation of her daughters... It’s pretty simple. If you were born with spérm, you’re a dude, and you can’t menstruate or get pregnant. If you were born with eggs and ovaries, you’re a woman, and you have the only reproductive system capable of carrying a baby and nourishing it for 9 months. If you were born with spèrm, and you shop for tampons, and claim you’re having severe menstrual cramps, and you think you’re pregnant, please get some help. At the rate society is going backwards, imagine what things will be like in another decade or so.🤦🏼‍♀️

After reading Jennette McCurdy’s book I’m Glad My Mom Died and knowing how her own mom exploited and abused her I find it super disturbing parents are doing all of these things but online for everyone to see. It also brings to light the idea that can kids actually *consent* to being on social media/televisions/movies? They don’t understand what they’re giving up/the consequences/benefits, so how can they make that decision, even if they say yes? Jennette’s story (and a lot of child actors) discusses how her want was purely to make her happy. That’s not consent 😬

My daughter was in the ICU (at age 3) for about 5 days. By the second day we knew she was going to be OK, but it didn’t stop me from breaking down in tears every time I left her room or ran home for supplies. It took so long to recover from the fear and utter panic of that entire event. It’s been over 10 years and I still remember how it felt …and it bordered on desperation. But it wasn’t just my own experience in being on the pediatric ICU. I would take her for walks by pulling her in a little wagon with an IV pole attached. I tried not to be nosy, but it was hard to ignore the fact that some of those kids didn’t have the positive outcome my child had. It was clear some of those kids might not make it home. I would’ve felt horrible celebrating my child’s wins in that type of environment. So So SO many other parents and families were suffering with unbearable pain and experiencing just a glimpse of that was incredibly humbling I think it’s thoughtless and self-serving that this mother created a TikTok dance video like this. I think she did it for views and clout and engagement rather than a true expression of her relief. Can you imagine how other parents with kids in the NICU at the same time felt watching her video?

I was born with quite a few deformities that had to be corrected with surgery. At 4 years old I broke my femur and it was only at 19 years old that the doctors realized what was wrong, and performed the right surgery. I've only been walking for the past 9 years, sometimes with support. But I've spent 28 years being embarrassed with a mother telling complete strangers my story. Colleges, shop attendants, family friends, people walking their dogs on the beach, basically anyone who just looked at my scars would get a full download; from infancy to adulthood. I've had a lot of health problems, but I've had no privacy. My consent was never asked. Here you don't know who I am, and here I can share a little of my own story, but it is my choice. I have to beg my mother not to tell people about my private life and then she always gets defensive. Please, please, please... DON'T put your children on ANY social media. Live for your children. What's more alarming is when a sex offender is actively on probation or parole, it's quite common (especially with cases where the victim was a minor and/or the predator utilized the internet to commit their crime) for one of their conditions not allowing them to use social media. But then once they've completed their probation or parole after however many years, even though they're still on the registry they can join social media again. The offenders this might apply to (it varies state to state) can be those convicted of crimes like statutory rape and attempted solicitation of a minor. Crimes that carry a max sentence of ~10 years give or take. Of course, those are just the ones that got caught and are known.
