Actually the dub of digimon got more crap past the radar than Pokémon.

The way I look at it is that every Digimon not attached to a human child still has to go through the rigors of natural evolution. Death, in that sense, is a major setback but you're correct--it still lacks the sting of any permanence. Wizarmon, on the other hand, will never be able to regenerate given he died in the real world. That makes his death even more impactful. Something to keep in mind: evolution is only spontaneous when human children are involved. Leomon, for instance, will have to evolve normally over however long the evolution process would take to naturally occur since he isn't paired with a human child. That being said, he might have evolved quicker than normal because he was still exposed to the light of Taichi's Digivice.

There are exceptions to a Digimon’s immortality. If a data type (which the vast majority of Digimon are) is killed by a virus type, the cycle of rebirth is broken and its data is sent to the dark area to become meat for demon lords. Alternatively, if a Digimon dies while digivolving, its data is corrupted and it permanently dies.

Apocalmyon is an ancient entity, he was formed before the rebirth system. He's a product of the early evolutionary process where dead digimon's data was scrambled&discarded. Notice how the villains(all created by apocalymon) are not reborn, they're not treated as a part of the digi-world but rather as something that corrupts it. This is expanded upon in 02 with dark ocean, due to Blackwargreymon being a product of dark ocean's spires he couldn't be reborn, similarly Devimon's data was also found in the Dark Ocean by Ken. It appears that the dark ocean is an ancient&primitive part of Digital World, a place where Digimon can't be reborn and their data floats endlessly like Wizardmon's in the Human world.

Yeah, the Dub gets more flak than it deserves IMO. I know it can be cringey at times, but it's still more than "just put a bunch of jokes in it and call it a day" that people make it out to be. The cartoonish aspects of the dub help accentuate the alien nature of the Digimon, and as this retrospective has shown, the original Japanese version isn't without it's faults either. I kind of interpret Apocalimon in the Dub less as some sort of Anti-Christ figure, and more like an angry teenager, finally being able to unload his emotions onto somebody after waiting for all this time. Perhaps all the Digimon that comprise Apocalimon see the Digidestined as the representatives of Homeostatis, blaming it for all of them not being able to Digivolve properly, and seek the destroy the Digidestined in an act of revenge. Apocalimon's not thinking clearly, which fits well with him literally being being made of up whatever scraps of data have been pulled into his dimension over all this time. You can even tie his goofy lines and sudden changes in demeanor into him being comprised of so many different Digimon chomping at the bit to say something to the children before finally destroying them.

That's why I pointed out the significance of his repeatedly clawing at himself, claiming that he's been made to suffer unjustly. It's manipulation. This gets into the weeds about what really defines what "evil" is. Apocalymon, in the OJ, claims "we" tried to be "good" and even talks about some of the attributes assigned to the children's crests. What's heavily implied is that Apocalymon's "sin" was that he defied Homeostasis. By extension, Apocalymon is essentially in rebellion against God and so must be assigned to hell. Remember too that Apocalymon isn't just a single entity. He's multiple entities comprised into one. Referring back to illustrations of Lucifer in Dante's Inferno: "He wept with all six eyes, and the tears fell over his three chins mingled with bloody foam. The teeth of each mouth held a sinner, kept as by a flax rake; thus he held three of them in agony." So we have a picture of Satan in constant despair over his own torment, much like Apocalymon talks about his own eternal sadness. Apocalymon's using the powers of the Dark Masters implies that the decahedron contains the Dark Masters. One can imagine that the Dark Masters are being made to writhe in agony, contorted within the depths of the decahedron, much like Satan chewing upon the mangled souls of the damned.

Interestingly the German dub is actaully quite faithful to the original. That's very cool in my opinon

The german dub actually kicked ass and i loved digimon immensly as a kid. It's my favourite anime/nostalgia/kid series until this day

Ok hear me out, when I was a kid watching the dub I didn’t mind one bit that the final boss was full of just jokes, cause I wasn’t really paying attention to the story either way. While it would have been interesting to look at the themes of the show, 7 year old me just thought the pizza joke and fights were entertaining. The English dub did much better to appeal to young children, with piñon having a sickly cackle and random jokes at times

They were. Their digimon became the Holy Beasts, but only Maki's one isn't.

@@how1tzer12 I think what they meant was we only see or hear of Daigo Nishijima and Maki Himekawa in Adventure Tri. There are still 3 other children that are completely unaccounted for.

I'm actually curious on how the other antagonists fit into this, because I see it for Etemon and Puppetmon (the one with the axe), but I'm drawing blanks on Devimon, Myotismon, and the other 3 Dark Masters

​@@borby4584 Adventure villains act like Feudal lords, in Vamdemon's case its even more obvious as he's based off of Vlad Tepes. Apocalymon&Puppetmon are the only ones that have tragic personality flaws that made them resort to power as means to cope. Also, Apocalymon isn't even 1 person, he's multiple discordant&miserable souls fused together, i think they missed a trick by not giving him a voice that shifts between multiple voices.

It's great that he shows so much respect and passion for what he does and for everyone involved with it! That being said, I wonder how many of those kids really knew who Frankenfurter was or had even seen Rocky Horror Picture Show. 😄

Different universes. Even if an argument can be made for a Digimon multiverse, the separate universes still have their own rules. The D-Reaper doesn't exist in the Adventure universe, because the monster makers don't exist. They exist in a universe where Digimon Adventure is a franchise, which the Adventure universe can't be

An explosion is actually defined as a rapid expansion of air. So when you're talking about space being expanded, it is the same idea.

​@@whattheegad Except there was no air, matter didn't exist at the earliest points in time because of how compact everything was. But even if you meant it was analagous, the word explosion very much gives the wrong imagery. It was closer to a balloon being inflated, one that started slow and sped up, rather than a an explosion being a very fast rapid expansion for a brief moment.

Then why did they even bother calling it the Big Bang if it’s not literally a Big Bang? I find it ironic how people complain about certain scientific inaccuracies when most of these inaccuracies stems from bad or questionable naming decisions made by scientists. Science is filled with contradictions. Like why is there a species of frog called a “mountain chicken”? why do we keep the name dinosaurs aka “terrible lizards” when they aren’t lizards but rather birds? And why’s a Red Panda even referred to as a panda when it’s actually a ferret? Not to self; don’t let scientists name things because they don’t seem to be good at it unless it’s some obscure Latin name!

​@@ulfberht4431 The name "the big bang" was coined by someone who didn't like the theory and was trying to mock it. That was just unfortunately the name that stuck. With Dinosaurs, by the time we knew they were more bird-like than lizard-like the name meaning terrible lizard had long stuck itself into our language. Don't know the origin of the other examples.

Hello, this is a quick comment just in response to yours. I went on a walk and I was reading your comment, just wanted to let you know I have not seen all of Last Evolution but it might be something that I might do in the future. I have seen bits and pieces, but not the entire thing. Maybe I will get around to it sometime. From what I have seen, I believe the folks writing the story are attempting to appease the folks who watched the show, if that makes sense. They're not giving the characters due process in organic development. There's a lot more to it than that, and I should give it more thought and deliberation in the future. But those are my thoughts so far.

Yeah I don’t think so From a writing standpoint, it would be unsatisfying if these weren’t the same kids we’ve been following for the entire series, but several copies. It effectively means that the characters haven’t actually grown, just being replaced by slightly better versions. Plus you’d think the villains would mention that they’ve killed their previous incarnations

You're on the right track. The way evolution worked essentially tied Digimon to humanity and therefore their salvation lies with humans. Homeostasis set the terms down, but evil or "dark" Digimon sought to achieve power by their own means. The allusion to Christianity is that Jesus says He is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. Apocalymon represents Digimon who sought to "enter the light" but relying on their own power and not on Christ (or, in this case, the Chosen Children who are Christ-like). Apocalymon is jealous of the children and their Digimon and blames them for it's suffering even though the children aren't responsible. Apocalymon wants to lay blame on anyone but itself for its suffering.

The reason I found it appropriate is that Apocalymon's realm represents hades. The compilation of prior villains implies that the villains are trapped within the decahedron and made to suffer for their crimes against Digimon and Humanity alike. It's why it's striking to learn that Apocalymon defies the Digimon classification because what it is no longer resembles anything recognizable. It is an abomination that can no longer find purchase in any realm save the hell of its own making.

​@@kamenrideraquarius You mean the design? I think some stuff can be said with regard to the fact that Greymon is the "sword" while Garurumon is the "shield." That might better remark on the relation that Taichi and Yamato have as the leaders of the group with Taichi being the aggressor and Yamato being the defender. In a sense, a WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon evolution is a sign that Taichi and Yamato have finally reached a "peak" or compromise in their relationship. They've acknowledge they're reliant upon the other. A sword without a shield leaves one open for attack. A shield without a sword leaves one without a method for attack. The dynamic between the two characters is that Taichi was courageous to the point of being reckless and Yamato was protective to the point of being overly cautious. Essentially, they're supposed to balance each other out. Omegamon is that compromise, that meeting of minds.

When the Chosen Children land in MetalSeadramon's realm, Piemon very specifically suggests they band together and kill them. MetalSeadramon, however, explicitly forbids it, saying that because it's his zone, the children are his to kill.

@@whattheegad first of all forbids is a strong word. Do you think Metal Seadramom could take Piedmon. Second, they clearly worked together originally. This was Metal Seadramon acting as if he had something to prove.

Because the Digimon fanbase has more dignity than the psychotic, bloodthirsty Pokemon fanbase who will draw blood if you say even a smidge bad thing about the show. Plus when it comes to how the humans treat their monsters, Digimon seems to have a stronger bond when it comes to the relationship between human and Digimon. You rarely get that in pokemon.

Most other dubs stay true to the original. The German version, for example, is almost word for word what the Japanese version was. Are you saying the OJ is not for kids?
