Digimon Adventure IN RETROSPECT | Pinocchimon's Story  

I haven’t watched the other videos in this series yet, so I apologize if you’ve already covered this, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention what the nature section of spiral mountain represents in the video. Each section of spiral mountain serves as an analogue for a phase in mankind’s evolution. Starting out as ocean dwellers, then crawling out of the sea in search of food, into nature. After developing tools and establishing communities we built large cities. Considering the final segment, the writers suggest we end up in darkness and desolation. Possibly as a result of said tools being used for war, or due to a crisis of faith (both being implied by the city segment). I also believe the dark masters mirror the vices and anxieties associated with different stages of human development; in Pinochiemon’s case adolescent anxieties dealing with control and relationships. He exerts control over his peers through fear, viewing his relationships as games. Mugendramon on the other hand seems to represent anxieties surrounding adulthood. He forfeits his soul in favor of becoming the perfect rational, powerful machine. As far as Matt’s development, I agree it’s rushed and poorly established, but I wouldn’t call it irrational. Matt realizes he is no longer needed by his peers, and is forced to choose between forfeiting his agency to Tai, obliterating himself, or going off on his own. He’s really fighting to preserve his sense of self. I think Matt’s decision to leave is an important one, because it deals with what happens in our real life friend circles as we grow older. There comes a time when we have to take stock in our relationships and decide if they are still beneficial for our individual growth. For Matt, Mimi and Joe, the answer was no. And while I think the narrative did a poor job of communicating this, I do think the takeaway was that their decisions were necessary at the time they made them. If not, they would’ve continued questioning their abilities and/or choices.

I'm not sure how I came across this video, but in watching it, it's taken me down the rabbit hole of your Digimon Adventure videos, as I greatly enjoyed the first season. Looking forward to the rest of your upcoming videos!

I love your breakdowns!!!!! Although you’re a weeb and watch the sub 🤮. You have well thought out interpretations and have a nice voice.

And you kept bringing up the 2020 reboot. And yeah it was bad. When I first watched it. Disappointed nearly the whole time. But. Now that the dub is out. I watched it in English and damn. I fricken love it. Obviously the original is better but there are episodes that surpass the original by far. It’s crazy how much I hated the sub and now I can say it’s a worthy companion piece.
