Gibson deserves mad credit for choosing this setting to explore; using real languages; indigenous casting; going all-out on the cinematography. That was fun! You guys are like a comedy team, and you don't even know when you're being funny. Nice one!
@@fernymina8731 "Gibson wanted an indigenous cast for the project, so the filmmakers found people from the Yucatan, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Xalapa, Veracruz and other spots. Two of the cast members are from the United States, three are from Canada and the rest hail from Central America." So pretty much most of them?
@@guts1258 yeah all he had to do was change the mayans to the aztecs and then it would have been historically accurate. The two groups had a similar aesthetic anyway and both lived in the same region give or take a few hundred miles.
I‘m Venezuelan, the ants being used to close the wounds are real. The jungles of south america have different size of ants and some are HUGE. The animal they killed in the beginning was a tapir not a ant eater :) I love how the enemies aknowledge that the prophecies of the little girl are coming true and that the gods are turning against them, slowly filling them up with fear. „He who darkens the sun“ (eclipse happening as he was about to be sacrificed), „he who brings the jaguar“. Well he literally brought the jaguar. Jaguars were sacred animals for them and you can hear one of them in fear, trying to apologize to their deity for killing one of it‘s son‘s (jaguar). This is a really cool movie and the soundtrack is amazing!
also there was an episode of duel survival where idk if it was cody or joe but they did the exact same thing and it was really cool! it had to be bug leaf cutters tho so they can do the death lock when u rip the body away
Unfortunately, because Gibson's been practically blacklisted in Hollywood, this freaking masterpiece of a film has been overlooked and forgotten. It needs more attention.
Fun fact: the little girl who prophecized their downfall did the scene in ONE take. I'm sure the made her do more than one, but they used the first take. So, it still counts as one. Youngest best actress I ever saw.
From what I heard is that the little girl who prophesied is not an actor. She was there as an "extra" but they needed a child to run those lines.....they picked her and she was "fabulous".
Hannah absolutely nailed it on the head; the sacrifices were purely spectacle to manipulate the masses. The Mayans were so advanced that they could actually predict with great accuracy when solar eclipses were to occur so they made sure their sacrificial ceremony coincided with such an event.
@@plmng7294 no, it’s the Mayans, although it does offer a distorted view of their civilization seeing as how the age depicted in the movie ended about 600 years prior to the movie’s setting. I
It's neither, the architecture and culture resembles the Mayans, but the Mayans were long gone before Cortez landed on the beaches of America. The Azteca were the ones who met the Conquistadors. But this is an amalgamation of the two for story purposes.
@@gumy3939 dude, look up the production of this movie. Gibson and the other writer debated on between featuring the Aztecs or Mayans and later settled on the Maya because of their high sophistication and eventual downfall. They then spent time researching Mayan culture and then brought in an expert on the Maya language to serve as an on-set advisor. They also brought in archaeologists and professors who were experts on the Maya and spent time at Maya ruins so they could accurately depict their architecture. Even Jaguar Paw’s wife’s tattoo is Mayan; it’s a horizontal band with two dots above which was the symbol for the number “7”.
The Maya experienced several periods and the civilization persisted for quite a long time after their technological peak, before the full-blown collapse. Those who have studied the Mayans note that construction and upkeep was more sophisticated the *older* it appeared, rather than newer. It is likely that by the end, leaders of the sort being portrayed barely understood what the more advanced ancient Mayans left them, beyond that the calendars predicted celestial movements.
I was in Mexico in 2006 and was looking forward to visiting the pyramid temples where this shit went down for real, all access was denied to area due to there being storms and also a feature film being shot. A mini bus full of people went down to the location to see if we could catch a glimpse of anything and low and behold we see Mel Gibson and everyone went nuts, as it went quiet and he was walking away I screamed FREEDOMMmMm at the top of my voice, he spun round laughing his head off and walked all the way back over right up to us and asked who the heck was that, aye it was me in a put on Scottish accent and he proceeded to shake my hand sign my t shirt and had a chat for a good 15 minutes, he apologised for having the placed closed down for filming and arranged that the following day we would be allowed in after 6pm just as long as no pictures where taken of things that were props and set stuff. The man had the hairiest hands and wrists I’ve ever seen

Man my grandpa is from Jalisco Mexico so he’s more closer to Aztec but this takes place in Yucatán. A lot of people don’t realize the rituals these people did. They also were involved in cannibalism and drinking blood. Crazy shit.
giant ants are used as "stitches" for wounds, due to how big they are, their mandibles ("jaws") are able to clench/pinch together tight enough to hold the sides of the skin of a wound together, and the mandibles remain in a "lock jaw", after you pinch/rip off its body from its head, leaving those giant ants heads "stitching" up the wound, until its healed/repaired up, the ancient "stitches" used by peoples who had the giant ants in their countries
5:45 Hannah has the BEST reactions! This is going to be a long & great reaction. When Ash starts her going she looks like she knows what's going to start happening & almost looks panicked 😂
29:03 Okay, that was genuine comedy. I love how both of you are in total agreement over the fact that you wouldn't get along in a stressful situation and would blame the other.
I love how throughout the chase you can see the fear slowly creep into the people chasing him. And how it did just what his dad was saying and tainting their heart and minds.
Ash: "He's fisting him!" Hannah: "He's NOT fisting him!" Lol I enjoyed watching your reaction to this incredible film. You both made me laugh and giggle.
The human sacrifices presented here were not simply a method to control the people. They were also thought to appease the Mayan Gods. As I understand it most archeologists do not fully understand the full meaning of these sacrifices, but never-the-less they did occur. The Mayans were not the only tribe to do this. The Aztecs further north had their own human sacrifices. To the Spanish Conquistadors the Aztec people were seen as depraved!
Not only the Conquistadors but many other South American tribes who had for years been victimized by the Aztecs. They gladly teamed up with the Conquistadors to take down the Aztec empire.
Well, it is implied that the priest and king knew that the solar eclipse was about to occur. And so, they arranged this event to make it look like the gods would "answer" them. I think, with the whole theme of "fear", Mel Gibson was making a statement on civilization - about how rulers always rule via fear, spectacle, and inside knowledge.

The Mexican mafia, Bloods, Crips, Aryan Brotherhood, etc. pretty much saw one head show up on a pike and determined they didn’t want the smoke from the new kids😂
I suppose just to add more clarity to something someone already commented on, the Maya were literally the most advanced astronomers of the ancient world. Nobody rivaled their knowledge of the cosmos until Europeans invented the telescope. However, this knowledge was only held by societal elites. Most common folk were ignorant of it and that ignorance was exploited by the elite like in the way portrayed in this movie. I'll also point out that the Maya at no time in history ever did any kind of mass sacrificial ceremony as depicted in this film. They did practice human sacrifice occasionally, but they only did that with societal elites. They never went out to rural areas to kidnap hunters and farmers for sacrificing. You had to be important otherwise the gods won't value the sacrifice and usually this was the end result of a ceremonial war between different Mayan city states. Whatever leadership was out there representing his city state knew that if he lost the ceremonial war, he was getting sacrificed. It was actually regarded as a great honor. Outside that context, their blood offering rituals didn't require the person to die. The Aztec on the other hand... well that's whole other story let's just say.
The ancient nightsky was a classroom for cultures around the globe the Bortle ( Darkness) Scale was a 9 ( highest) I bet the Galaxies , The Milky Way ,The Constellations , and the different meteor showers -Pleiades , the Aurora Borealis, Shooting Stars and yes even the UFO's were probably spectacular sights. That being said the Chinese Astrologers were just as advanced as the Mayans some of their records of Celestial happenings go back 5000 years .
@@NATIVESUNSETS65 Yeah no. The Chinese had the weakest understanding of the cosmos in the ancient world. The Maya accurately calculated celestial movements to a precision and accuracy that was only achieved by another culture after the telescope was invented. The Maya were even aware that the night sky over a long enough period of time will change whereas every other culture assumed it was eternally static.
@@johanstinson Most of their understanding came from the Mesopotamians who, yes, had a firm understanding of the heavens, but it still wasn't quite as good as the Maya's. The Mesopotamians and by extension the Egyptians (Greeks, Romans, Persians, Arabs and Indians as well) are a close second though.
Awesome, growing up I always thought this film was like universally loved by Mexicans because it was made by Mexicans, it was crazy and super cool finding out it was Mel Gibson behind it. Apocalypto is huge amongst us lol, it’s like one of the movies we all grew up watching. At least that’s what I’ve noticed here in Los Angeles
In mexico this is sort like a 50/50, some say its a really cool movie and like the action, some other say its a racist movie that tries to portray mexicans as savages and usually use the "historical innacuracies" argument to justify that opinion. Another movie that has this 50/50 split is Sicario (both of them) with the "every mexican must be a narco" trope. I personally think its a great action movie.
It's an extremely historically inaccurate movie. Gibson did a good job at making it a good and thrilling picture but it's not accurate to the period or Mayan people.

reality was probably more harsh Mayans and Aztecs were brutal, so much that almost every tribe in the region were happy to supply Spanish conquistadores with all the food and information possible to destroy their empires not that it was that hard, their empires were on political ruin already because of the tyrannical ways they had, not to mention the plagues ps. jaguars are the second biggest feline in the world, they have one the strongest bites in the world, absolutely destructive.

@@deiselnoe1Jesus Christ, what are you getting triggered for? You have no idea what other comments this person made "geeking out" over anything else. In the context of the setting, where there is no modern technology, it must have been crazy for the main characters to suddenly see ships, and not have any idea what they were. The wife even acknowledged that. It must have been jarring. Also, the ships are symbolic for the fall of this civilization, and a "new beginning" which is what Jaguar alludes to. "The new world" is synonymous with Europeons. So, while it is a tiny part of the movie, the implications are large, because the Mayans do eventually disappear. The Jaguar was also a tiny part of the movie, but the symbolism was meaningful. Would you have gotten upset if someone acknowledged the jaguar, or did the association with Europeans make you mad. You need to chill the f out.

Well if Im not mistaken these are AZtecs in central Mexico from 14th to 16th century , Mayans are a much older (about 2000 years) civilization which was already long gone by the time Europeans rediscovered Americas. Also this Human Sacrifice thing is more a AZTEC thing. Remember this is 14th -16th centuries and this type of Sacrifice in mass scale was Somewhat unique. I am Sri Lankan Sinhalese..., and in our culture also there was savage punishments (32 ways of torture) up until 1815 before brits abolished the old legal system. With Aztecs it was all about pleasing the GODs by sacrificing friend and foe alike..(if it came it it)..they even sacrificed Europeans mate....And this is the same culture now Mexican Gangs/Cartels like AZTECO follow...unfortunately.
The peak of the Mayan civilization was gone by the time of the Spanish conquistadors, but they weren't long gone. The Mayans had the longest resistance to the Spanish than any other native civilization.

Your reaction to this film was great! Please keep in mind this film as well as most other historical films (hacksaw ridge the exception) by mel Gibson is completely inaccurate, the depicted people who conquered the others are judging from the clothing and body jewelry clearly Mayan (Central/South America) whose high culture had perished long before the arrival of the europeans. Also the Mayans never sacrificed people on the scale as depicted (aztecs= today mexico did though), they did however sacrifice people on special occasions but not on this scale. There is also one other major problem with this mainly that they show that the land is heavily disease ridden (the reason for the sacrafices) even before the europeans arrive, yet the arrival of the europeans in the americas especially the south/central americas caused the dieing of intire peolpe like the Aztecs and Incas because they had no immunity to the diseases carried by the colonizers like smallpox thus millions perished before the rest was conquered and inslaved, after that colonies like Brazil, Peru and Mexico (then new spain) were established.
