The tale of the two donkeys in the Gospel of Matthew, as opposed to the singular steed mentioned in the other Gospels, has sparked a vibrant dialogue among scholars and enthusiasts alike. This curious case of equine discrepancy has led to a spirited exchange between defenders of the text and critical academics. Notably, the discussion drew an apology from the team at Inspiring Philosophy for previously labeling Dr. Bart D. Ehrman as "woefully ignorant," yet they continue to assert that Matthew's account is error-free. The question then arises: Did Matthew intentionally depict Jesus as having two donkeys, or is there a deeper significance behind this narrative choice? To shed light on this enigmatic issue, we've convened a panel of great minds, including Dr. Dale C. Allison Jr., known for his comprehensive commentary on Matthew, Dead Sea Scroll expert Dr. Kipp Davis, and Stephen Nelson, a valued colleague & avid Greek learner, to explore the nuances of this debate. Together, we'll delve into the motivations behind Matthew's departure from Mark, the implications for historical accuracy, and whether this discrepancy challenges the text's credibility. Moreover, we'll examine Matthew's familiarity with Hebrew scripture and the significance of semitisms within his Gospel. This exploration is not just an academic exercise but a journey into understanding the complexities and debates that have shaped the interpretation of sacred texts. Join us as we navigate the intriguing puzzle of Matthew's dual donkeys and what it reveals about biblical scholarship and the quest for meaning in ancient narratives.

I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to hear Dale Allison, one of the most erudite professors of our time, say “I don’t know”. Literary interpretation, especially across languages and cultures and centuries, has this inherent issue of drift. It’s the Achilles heel of biblical literalism and in a broader sense any belief that relies on human transmission.

“alexamenos worships his [donkey-headed crucified] god” Maybe Mathew needs Jesus to put his feet on top of the baby donkey. 🫏 that way Matthew’s source of money collections can say: “what donkey God? Jesus did not dignify donkeys by riding them individually , in fact he placed his feet on one!” Matthew writer: “2 donks.” Mark writer: “1 donk is enough.” Matthew: “no, 2 donks are needed to match more exactly an OT passage of my Masoretic Hebrew/Aramaic text.” Mark: “yeah, but culturally one donk is enough to make a cultural philosophical point for my less bibliolatrist Greek speaking audience.”

Why is no one interested in an allegoric interpretation? Philo of Alexandria was promoting the idea that Moses wrote allegorically around the same time that Christ supposedly walked the earth and Josephus also acknowledges this idea in his writings, so why does everyone seem unwilling to take this context seriously? Plato's Cratylus explains how there is a "correctness" to names and how names can be "disguised" by altering spelling, changing syllables, or even using different words with the same meaning. For example, in Hebrew, a female donkey is expressed as "athon" and this suggests that the donkey represents the ideas associated with "Athens", while the "colt" is expressed in Greek as "polos" which suggests that it represents "Paul" (G. Paulos). If these connections are correct, then the "triumphal entry" is an allegory that represents the combining of Greek and Jewish thought. Correctness also allows us to identify Joseph of Arimathea with Josephus (Joseph bar Matthias), Joseph the "carpenter" ("tomb" and "wall" builder) and even "Peter" (disguise of Greek "pater" or "father"). In Greek, the name "Philo" means "friend" and this idea can be represented in Hebrew as "merea" when then becomes "Maria" or "Mary". This also explains why there are numerous "errors" in translations. If hidden meanings are determined by phonetic similarities, then translators are inevitably faced with situations when the phonetics of a Greek word suggest a hidden meaning that is very different from the hidden meaning associated with the Hebrew word. This means that if the translator wants to maintain the hidden connections, he will be forced to abandon or adjust the literal meaning.

I came upon this glaring discrepancy while still a Christian, many years ago. Bringing it up as an honest question may have led to me being asked to "find another church." It is obvious that much of the testimony of the Gospel was word of mouth, and not eye witness accounts. You have to ask yourself how so much of the Gospel is written in omniscient author, which is in essence God writing the story. But people just accept it as though God did write the story, not people who witnessed these events.

There is so much more to the scriptures than 99.99% of Church Leaders know. I haven’t been told to find another church, but I have been told not to teach things from the scriptures. The scriptures have more to them and it is a shame that you didn’t find one that understood that, but instead found a Matthew 7:21-23 Church.

@@Michael_the_Servant Lol. I was told to "find another church" several times, and eventually I began to believe them. These Christian churches were not good for me. I eventually found out that I didn't really get what I had hoped for out of that religion. It was nothing more than social politics. I was raised Christian, read the bible and followed the religion for twenty years as an adult. I couldn't hang with these people, and tried many denominations. I left Christianity and the Republican party back in 2005.

@@Scott_works I feel you! I am a follow of Jesus, not the religion of “Christianity,” and you are correct, many Evangelicals have created an idol out of the Republican party and certain candidates. I came to know Christ while rejecting Christianity, because they don’t follow scripture. Jesus taught on scripture and corrected the pharisees on the Tradition of the Elders. Way too many Christian pastors are merely modern day pharisees following tradition instead of scriptures.

For me it was Matthew 27:5-10 in which the author appears to quote from Zechariah but mysteriously credits Jeremiah: Matthew 27: 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.” I accidently discovered that this "error" just happens to create an allusion to Jeremiah 38:6-13 where Jeremiah "hanged" himself to escape the cistern: Jeremiah 38:6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud. 7 But Ebed‐Melek, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate, 8 Ebed‐Melek went out of the palace and said to him, 9 “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.” 10“Then the king commanded Ebed‐Melek the Cushite, ‘Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.’ 11 So Ebed‐Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn‐out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12 Ebed‐Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, ‘Put these old rags and worn‐out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.’ Jeremiah did so, 13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.” This is the only passage in the Book of Jeremiah that mentions the number "thirty" and this number is also used in a manner that seems to present a ridiculous picture of an overabundance of rescuers. The discovery of this hidden "parallel" eventually led to my realization that the entire Bible is allegory and all the "errors" and "contradictions" that have been preserved are actually puzzles to be solved that reveal hidden meanings and connections. In regards to the "donkey" and the "colt", the donkey is a metaphor for "Athens" and this is because of the phonetic similarity to the Hebrew word "athon" which means "female donkey", while the "colt" is expressed in Greek as "polos" and serves as a metaphor for Paul (G. Paulos). These connections then indicate that the "triumphal entry" into Jerusalem represents a union between Greek and Jewish thought. The "disguising" of names by altering spelling, changing syllables, or using different words with the same meaning is actually discussed in Plato's Cratylus and by some odd coincidence the Latin word "cratalis" is frequently included in the etymology of the word "grail". It is amazing how well this approach seems capable of explaining nearly everything and yet no one else seems interested.

@@Scott_worksI left the GOP in 2006. I’m an agnostic and raised by agnostics, so I didn’t leave the church. I was never in it. Still, I respected those that followed the teachings of Jesus. In 2006 there was a great debate in the U.S. over torture and whether water boarding was torture or was “enhanced interrogation”. That bothered me, but it wasn’t what caused me to break from the GOP. What sundered me from the GOP wasn’t the tedious attempt say a form of torture wasn’t really torture. What shocked me was how many friends and neighbors were 100% pro-torture. They weren’t interested in the debate, they just got off on the idea of torturing our enemies, and Muslims were our enemies. Therefore it was OK to torture someone who you had mistakenly identified as a terrorist if they were Arabs. Ordinary people that I thought were Christian and Conservative thought that the abuses uncovered at Abu Graib looked like great fun. And the rest of the community didn’t push back. They accepted these attitudes instead of challenging them. And when I did, I was considered to be soft, a squish, not a “real American”. My patriotism was called into question because I was anti-torture.

Dr Allison once made a comment (he might have been quoting somebody else) that instantly changed my whole lens that I looked at the Gospels through . He said When we read Matthew it is obvious that Matthew was at least was "In contact " with Jews that knew the O.T. . It is NOT necessary to know if he was a Jew himself. The high quality of the Greek tells us he was a smart man and would easily "Grasp" the O.T. no matter what he was just by speaking to Jews he met on the street. It is impossible he knew no Jews. This alone can explain his often in depth knowledge of the Jewish religion . No matter what he actually was is unimportant only what influenced his writing.

The Dionysian coinage of the god resting on a donkey is fascinating and very much appropriate to the story of Jesus’ triumph entry riding on a donkey and a donkey’s colt. An example of an early Dionysian parallel in the Hebrew Scriptures is the Genesis vine & wine prophecy of the coming of Shiloh (i.e. the Messiah) in Genesis 49:11. I have translated it in the following manner:

“Binding his donkey to the vine, and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, He washed garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes. His eyes are darker (ink blue?) than wine, and his teeth (while smiling?) whiter than milk.” The question becomes: Did Jesus, aware of Dionysus, set himself up purposely to bring about a literal parallel to him in space and time history? Did he purposely come to, among other things, to fulfill tropes related to the most compelling aspects of Bacchus and other mythological expectations of the golden age? Or did early Christians write fictional history so as to make stories and motifs to elevate Jesus into a more powerful deity? What is fascinating is how the Tübingen School theologian, David Friedrich Strauss, rejected the account of the wedding of Cana as a latter interpolation on the score that that such enjoyment, in his opinion, would be utterly unworthy of Jesus. Such an argument for me is hard to fathom especially while I am sipping on good wine and contemplating life. But to each his own. According to the Hebrew Scripture, the Messianic era would involve an abundance of wine. ”On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine - the best of meats and the finest of wines.” (Isaiah 25:6) The Mishna and also Josephus describes the first century temple in Jerusalem as having gate doors being 149 feet high and 24.5 feet wide. It had golden vines above it, from which clusters of grapes hung as tall as a man's height. Considering that the gate doors had golden vines, it could very well be possible that a golden donkey was placed in the temple at one time next to the golden vines so as to represent a potential fulfillment of the Shilo prophecy. For believing Christians, Bacchus (imperfectly, in a broken manner) prefigured the coming of Christ as the true vine. Jesus came, among things to fulfill Dionysian symbolism and expectation for a golden age of peace and prosperity that is yet to come. The story at the wedding of Cana being the most important.

Wrong early Christians often used pagan myths to illustrate certain Christian beliefs - for example using the egg to illustrate the idea that Christ escaped from the tomb. It doesn't necessarily follow that those Christian beliefs were taken from those pagan myths. A striking example is when St Paul was preaching on the Areopagus in Athens -he had noticed that there was a pagan altar "to the unknown god" and Paul used this as an entree into the idea that this unknown god was the Hebrew Yahweh. Pagans often had these altars to unknown deities in case these gods were offended for being neglected. Early Christian historian and apologist Eusebius of Caesarea in his "Preparation for the Gospel" argued that all those pagan myths that sounded like Christian beliefs and claims were actually placed there by God to make people used to the idea of the coming of Christ.Purely facile to claim that all this was direct Christian borrowings.
@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 4 месяца назад
@@kaloarepo288So you’re saying that the book of Matthew was written with a pagan audience in mind?
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 4 месяца назад
@@MarcosElMalo2 No I am not -I'm saying that Christian apologists often used concepts and ideas familiar to the pagan world to illustrate their own stories and doctrines. The story of the "Unknown god" as reported in the "Acts of the Apostles' is an example of this -also the solar mythology was used with reference to Christ -Christ being the light of the world who defeats the forces of darkness the way the sun does. Satan was often equated with Pan or Pluto and other pagan deities. Nothing unusual about this -the only way you can convert people to your way of thinking is to discuss things already familiar to them - concepts familiar to them. Christians trying to convert American Indians would talk of the great spirit and heaven being the happy hunting grounds. Jesuit missions in China in the 17th century expressed christianity in a Confucianist way talking about Tien and other chines concept. pretty simple really but jokers in this section talk about dionysian influences on christianity and such rot purely because of the eucharist ceremony!

@@kaloarepo288 But I would argue that the Gospel writers highlighted what the historic Jesus did, because he himself wanted to contextualize his message to the culture even beyond the Judaism of his day. Consider what was found not too long ago in the wine country of Burgundy. A 2nd century mosaic of the major Greek Epicurean Philosophers was discovered in 1965 and 1990 in Autun, France. On the ground of a panel is inscribed Sententiae Vaticanae 14: “We have been born once and there can be no second birth. For all eternity we shall no longer be. But you, although you are not master of tomorrow, are postponing your happiness. We waste away our lives in delaying, and each of us dies without having enjoyed leisure.” It is signed with Metrodorus' name. It appears to me that this is what Jesus was reacting to in his conversation with Nicodemus (note Greek name). Humanity is condemned to suffer corruption that will not cease upon death, unless a miracle of “new birth” takes place. Mythical radiance is part of the enchantment of Christianity. For example, at the wedding of Cana which was a preview of the marriage supper of the Lamb, Jesus fulfilled all that was good, noble & excellent expressed within the archetypal image of Bacchus. The "Marriage Supper of the Lamb" (Rev. 19) requires a proper wedding garment (Matt. 22)- namely, Christ's righteousness-obtained by faith in His death for our sins and resurrection for our justification. I for one, do not want to miss this banquet at the end of time, by casting it aside as some sort of fictional invitation.

A great discussion that reinforces how difficult exegetical problems can be. Maybe Matthew wanted to saddle us with a joke? More seriously, I find Dr. Allison's arguments rather more persuasive. But I'll offer a brief comment on the passing mention of the "other Jesus" (Barabbas) by Matthew. I don't think this has much, if anything, to do with literary matters (i.e., use of couplets). There is, it seems to me a volume of evidence to suggest that Matthew, here, has theological intentions, introduced by a deliberate reference to the Yom Kippur ritual. Some early Christian writers (Origen, Barnabas) so understood it, and a detailed modern analysis is given by Daniel Stoekl ben Ezra *The Influence of Yom Kippur on Early Christianity*. Beyond his analysis, I think Mt. carries that symbolism right through his Passion Narrative, illuminating several points in the narrative.

The Riding of two Donkeys by Matthew is done for the same reason John placed two Angels in the Tomb in John 20:12. It is the same reason Jesus was crucified between two others on crosses. It is the same reason there was a flaming sword between the two Cherubim. Jesus is the door back to the tree of life, He is the place between the two creatures that God speaks through to the people. As for Matthew and Mark stating Galilee, Luke stating Jerusalem, and John’s going fishing, they are prophetic representation of things that would take a book to explain, but can be seen in stories like Elijah and Elisha going from Gilgal -> Bethel -> Jericho-> Beyond the Jordan and then back to Gilgal. (Go ahead try and correct me and say he didn’t return to Gilgal.)

It’s not a random subject. It comes up every year about a month before Easter and is debated until a month after.

Regarding Jay Smith (mentioned at the end) he is a Phd in Christian Apologetics, from a Christian institution. Better academics for the discussion of how Islam changed and developed can be found on the RU-vid channel: Exploring the Qur'an and Bible. Lately, there was a very good vid, where the academic in Near Eastern religions and cultures Sean Anthony was interviewed.

So now there's (4) of you... and you afraid to debate me? Why don't you triple that and come back for battle. Will $1,000 per participant be enough? Let me know. The me that 'knows'.

So what, you are challenging them to debate you on the authenticity and accuracy of the bible? Good luck. The bible is a blend of fact, fiction, fairytale, folklore, fable and fantasy. It is religions fiction and state sponsored propaganda. It is a book put together by the Roman empire to consolidate many peoples of various pagan origins into one state controlled religion and calendar.

Hi.MATTHEW 21:2 saying to them, " Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; untie them and being them to me.21:3 if any one says anything to you, you shall say, ' The Lord has need for them, ' and he will send them immediately." Rsv The owner or owners of the colt and ass,will send them immediately. MARK 11:3 If any one says to you, ' why you doing this?' say, ' The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.Rsv Disciples can understand differently in what they hear. Zachariah 9:9 👉 only part quote quoted 👉 humble and riding an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass. Rsv What does the above mean? Does it mean that Jesus rode an ass,which was a colt,and a colt is a foal/baby of an ass ? Ps.Colt is under four years old. Foal is under one years old.

Mark mentions one blind man called Ti•mae'us. Matthew mention two blind men. It seems Matthew is giving facts,and Mark is giving facts. I will say Mark is being specific with a named man,yet that does not mean,that Matthew is wrong in saying ,their are two blind men.

I’m going to be honest, 3 minutes in and I’ve seen Dr. Kipp act charitably in streams and scripted videos, but that description of Michael or Stephen’s view (unclear which one in this case) was a really disappointing steelman of their position. :/ Comments like “word salad” and how they tried to make an argument (rather than making an argument) is in poor taste and bad faith, especially given how they recognized you made a mistake and were exceptionally gracious in even mentioning it. I’d imagine, if you took an approach like Stephen Nelson’s, you’d have some incredible dialogues and get folks like me more receptive to your arguments. :)

Don't make asses of yourselves for tripping over the donkey's. All our "Scriptures" were altered long ago. What they could not cover up is the harmony between the teachings of Jesus to the Hebrew Scripture - that he was renewing the Covenant Standards via his teachings. Matthew is the best we have - but it is altered. Onediscipletoanother as an organization has the whole Hebrew Matthew with references at the last main link. Expand your minds fellows.

I mean, the Roman emperors got together with the Pope etc at the Council of Nicea. They created the Jesus myth, threw out some writings, amended other writings, the first pope was an emperor, and voila! Christianity was born. Everyone was born a Catholic, no choice, and must tithe to the church forevermore.

Except for everything you just wrote, that’s the most credible explanation. Your theory is as divorced from history as Ken Ham’s theories about Genesis. Should I go through everything you wrote? Let’s just say address your first error, that there were multiple Roman emperors at Nicea. Seriously, you’re throwing out a slapdash glib conspiracy theory that has no factual basis. I’m not a Christian believer. I’m not trying to defend the faith. I just prefer the facts when discussing history. Your little story is devoid of facts.

Jn 2:1 ...And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: *and both Jesus was called, * Mtt 21:9 “... Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; ... Jn **6:42** ... Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, 'I came down from heaven'?” 1 Jn **5:20** And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, *even in his Son Jesus Christ* . This is the true God, and eternal life.
