Appalling Northern Territory living conditions revealed
Celebrated filmmaker Rachel Perkins takes journalist Greg Bearup on a tour around White Gate ( Irrkerlantye) or White Gate, a place members of her family have lived for 40 years - longer if you count the old days.
There’s nothing noble or romantic about it now. It’s a disgrace to all of us. White Gate is one of Alice Springs’ squalid and shameful town camps, sat on the outskirts of a prosperous regional city in a wealthy developed country.
“I want people to see this,” Perkins says with tears in her eyes. “I just don’t think people understand.”
This is one of about 20 town camps around Alice, home to 1500 people, all of them Indigenous.
