Absolute bloody legend, and Les has done immeasurable good with young veterans, his pandanus park project just one example.

I loved this show as a kid. Despite being an Officer in the Australian Army and a Vietnam War veteran, there was no faux-macho bravado and complete respect for the wildlife.

Watched this guy as a young fella in Ireland and fell in love with Australia and the outdoor life, the skills and the knowledge needed to be in the bush. Les also instilled a huge respect in me for the aboriginal culture and customs that had been sadly lacking in me at the time. Well, I grew up, moved to Australia and eventually became a super proud Australian citizen and I never really climbed out of the "bushman" rabbit hole and got a real life/career...all thanks to Mr. Hiddins. Top bloke and a bloody legend.

I wish he'd start a youtube channel and make his own new shows.

Les Hiddins the bush tucker man and the leyland brothers were my favorite tv shows growing up.

I am 31 and everyone my age grew up watching the Bush Tucker Man, we used to walk around primary school debating which tree leaves we could eat and which would kill us, none of us knew anything, we all thought if we got lost we would definately survive though, Les is a legend.

I am from the united kingdom and i watched the bushtucker man in the 80s still watch it even now, the man should have a statue built for what hes done for australia they built them for the explorers and I think hes done far more then what they done, I tip my hat of to you sir you are the best of them all les hiddins :)

Jack Absalom and Les Hiddins, both of them are my heros, I watched their shows when I was a kid here in Canada, I am 40 now and I am still captivated watching their videos.

How come Les hasn’t been knighted? He also does great things for veterans with PTSD.

I agree with Les, the terrain and scenery are beautiful. But I listened to the nomads of the Arabian deserts too, the Bedouin, who told me: The desert is a woman with many beautiful faces. But if you are an ignorant fool, or disrespect her only once, she will kill you. It can equally be said of Australia's desolate places. We loved Les, but more so did the Aboriginals, who for millennia had lived with and from the land. They understood that Les was just as in touch with the land as they were, and shared their knowledge. That knowledge which now will not be lost. This was just one of the remarkable things Les Hiddins achieved. His television series was such an eye opener, and still is. I am so glad that Les took the time to show us all how much the land is a part of us. That there is no need to fight it, or conquer it. That all that is required is to accept it, live with it, blend in and become part of it, and survive in it. Magnificent. A truly magnificent achievement. Les Hiddins, your series taught me what Australia is, a remarkably beautiful country to be respected, rich in traditions and past, long before the white man ever arrived and after. May it always be this way. By the way....if I were going into the Australian bush I would want a copy of Les's field guide to hand. It could save your life.

@ABC Australia BEST show EVER that graced the silver screen! His voice, his knowledge, his acceptance by the Aboriginal communities due to the respect he showed to nature speaks volumes. Politicians can take an example how to engage with people! Thank you ABC for this ripper tv show. Looking forward to seeing all the seasons. Real treat to our family free time on cold winter days...

It is wonderful to see Les in his so-called 'retirement' living the good life in FNQ, still active and still so engaged.....Australians of my generation have good memories of BTM. I think it is important to recall that at that time, Indigenous race relations in Australia were moving along, with the Mabo decision then in the process culminating in 1992. Les did more than anyone at that time to represent the original inhabitants of Australia and his obvious respect and understanding spoke volumes in building links between 'whitefella' Australia and Indigenous Australians. Add to that that on a Sunday night, he took us all to parts of Australia most of us will never see. I do not think there has been another guide like Les since. Its also good to see-you can take the bloke out of Army but you cannot take Army out of the boy- I note he's tramping around in Terra mk 1 combat boots, heating water over a hexy stove and using a cups canteen-once Army gets in tyour system, you never get rid of it! I also wanted to make 3 more points ( =bit of a long post here0 The first is to LANDLINE, you need a lesson on ranks, Les was not a Captain when he made the series- but a MAJOR, so please correct your video notes! The second point is : thankyou for your service Les, as a RAINF soldier in South Vietnam. And lastly-a big hats off to the late and great Rory O Donoghue who composed the haunting theme- older viewers may recall he was one of the original cast of Aunty Jack. RIP Rory, and go well.

I grew up watching Les as a kid, he instilled the love of the outdoors, respect of how the First Nations lived with the land. bless him. showed it to many of my friends while living back in Europe. Always used to bring a tear to my eye, felt so homesick id go out in the yard and bake a damper and boil a billy

I grew up on Les Hiddins the Bush Tucker Man, every episode was an adventure packed full of interesting stories and of course valuable survival tips, As i watched from the comfort of my Yorkshire home, not knowing that I would ever really see much of the plants he featured, but as it is with life, I spent most of my adult years living in South East Asia, so it was good to put viewing pleasure to practice, Thank you Les, top bloke, top program,

This brings back memories. Loved watching this show as a kid. What a legend. Don’t see many of his kind on screen any more which is a true shame. That’s real tv right there.

Have always admired this man and his passion for Australia . His recognition of the local people always . Hes mocked some explorers lack of insight , but hes kindly laid bare the facts of the time . They dont make them like the Bushtucker Man thats for sure

Ive just gotten into the bush tucker man series after seeing on a ray mears episode. Extremely knowledgable and intelligent man doing authentic bushcraft. Great stuff

Grew up in the UK watching BTM original and brilliant series in the 90's, thankfully they have been put all online. I had the chance to tour Oz in 2013 by motorbike alone, from east to west via unsealed roads, watched the series in case I ever got in trouble (had some desert survival training in the Army too). Oz is a fantastic country and I wish I could live there.

aw - I used to LOVE watching his series... I couldn't get the channel when it was live - but people kept talking about it and I'd never seen it - then eventually I managed to tap into a whole bunch of episodes and I think I binge-watched the whole lot in one sitting. I was wandering round the house talking Australian and looking for 'tucker' in the fridge (while my partner rolled her eyes wearily).

We kids were shown Bush Tucker Man at school when it first came out in 1988. I remember it well.

Bring back Harry Butler! That guy would swim in places I'd be frightened to look at a picture of. He'd pick up some toxic horror, explain its place in the biome and then always say "I'll just pop him back where he was: and *let it go* . *Right near him* . Harry was a total legend.

Who can forget that "guitar Twang" theme song as most Australians living in the 80's always looked forward to The Bush Tucker Man episodes when they first came out in a time of epic Australian explorers shown on TV. Les Hiddins will be remembered with other iconic Aussies like Steve Irwin, Malcolm Douglas, The barefoot bushman, Alby Mangles, The Leyland Brothers, Harry Bulter, Jack Absalom and Richard Green all true Aussie Legends when growing up and exploring the bush and beach was a true adventure. I tip my hat to you all.
