The worst part about airpods on anything but an iPhone is simply that they refuse to tell you the battery percentage natively. That's complete anti-consumer BS. Apple is trying to tell us they can't figure out how to report a stat on a non-iOS device that every other bluetooth device can do.

It is always weird when they restrict stuff like that. I purchased some $7 Bluetooth earbuds (aliexpress style junk) the frequency response range is bad but it is good enough for vocals. I used them while using an air based paint sprayer to paint my basement after DIY remodeling. Since the paint particles get everywhere , I didn't want to get paint on my good earbuds, but still wanted to listen to podcasts. The craptastic earbuds showed their battery life on the android status bar. It seems like the cheapest available SOCs for earbuds simply offer all of those basic functions as a standard, such that there is no minimum amount that you can pay and not get something with those features. It is shameful for apple to not offer it if their earbuds are used on android.

The inability to update AirPods or use an Apple Watch without an iPhone are two big sticking points to me; if they really couldn't figure it out, wouldn't it make sense to just be open about the communication standards they set up and let the open source community implement the hard part for them? @DefianceOrDeath I think you might have accidentally commented on the wrong post. I never even insinuated that Apple was a monopoly. I would say that they have every reason to be sued for their anti-competitive practices, which I believe fundamentally go against the very idea of our free market economy in the first place. People would have had the same reservations and doubts about breaking up the robber barons back in the day, but I think in hindsight, most people would agree it was the right thing to do. Frankly, the only reason Apple has been able to get where they are is because something wasn't done about this sooner. They should have been sued 10 years ago. Either way, I'm not calling them a monopoly, and I'm certainly not a communist. I'm a small business owner down in Florida, which I think genuinely makes me one of the furthest things from a communist I could be. Hopefully, this response clarifies things. Cheers. Edit: If somebody is out there insinuating that they should be sharing their r&d, platform, or similar assets, then that person is insane. The majority of people I see advocating for this lawsuit are mostly in agreement that the main issue is intentionally degrading experiences for non-Apple users on their platform. It would be like if I owned a Tesla dealership and was willing to sell you a new car. But if you're not already a Tesla owner, you will pay the same amount of money for a car that is missing half of the features, and I also won't service the vehicle in the same way if it breaks. Also, you can give friends and family that don't own a Tesla a ride. However, any non Tesla owner that rides in your car with you won't be able to listen to the music, use the air conditioning, or operate their window. Being okay with something like that is just silly.

I ended up just unhooking the "secondary" drive during the install, it was the only way to stop this behavior. (I subsequently stopped this behavior by stopping installing Windows. :P) Also upvote to main comment as a fellow Linux user who also had an Xbox controller, which had the naughty firmware that didn't connect to Linux. oh, and apparently it was an intentional design decision to make the Xbox controllers not able to connect to Linux via Bluetooth. There was a DRM check that, if failed (because, say, Linux) the connection wouldn't work. I've since switched to an 8bitdo that actually works better for the gaming I do, after breaking the USB port on my Xbox controller (the Bluetooth had crashed quite some time ago).

@@DefianceOrDeath What exactly would be a monopoly in your mind then? If Apple were the only company making smartphones, you'd just say "they're not a monopoly. They make computers that happen to fit in your pocket. If you want something else, get a laptop". This reasoning is very disingenuine. The truth is that you buy an iphone for the pretty UI and for integration with icloud or long battery or whatever, and then you are stuck with inability to install anything not approved by apple, with a lack of options in regards to NFC payment apps, with one single mandatory browser engine (even if you want to install chrome, it's still just a skin over ios's webkit) and so on. They abuse their power. It's that simple.
@DefianceOrDeath
@DefianceOrDeath 3 месяца назад
@@blank-404 So to be clear, they don't have a monopoly-- but yes, if they had a monopoly, I would acknowledge they had a monopoly. I'm not going to entertain the whole "if they were the only company selling" because they aren't. They just aren't. If they were, then yeah, that would be a monopoly. But that's not how it is. And everything else you described is 100% NOT a monopoly and is in my eyes absolutely legitimate. Like you want to be able to install whatever you want? Get a Samsung device. That's not what Apple is about. The thing is, as someone that hates Apple, I can respect that there are pros and cons associated with that. Not being able to install literally anything anyone makes helps ensure that the devices are far safer. That comes at an expense. Apple designing things this way is not a secret. They don't advertise otherwise. Apple has a ecosystem that is great for people who aren't tech savvy. Now they're being punished for it by the DOJ. Again, I hate Apple. I've never owned their products. I advise friends and family to avoid their products. But they're successful for a reason. "you are stuck with inability to install anything not approved by apple," Again, even though I hate Apple, I actually think what you described there is a net positive for many people. Do you really want your Grandma getting scammed into downloading a dozen viruses onto her smart phone? Stop pretending like everyone that wants a smart phone is a computer nerd. "with a lack of options in regards to NFC payment apps, " Again actually something I see zero issue with, and I can definitely acknowledge the benefits of that. Do you really want some sketchy third party app to handle your payments? I don't. I'm a Samsung fan because I can install whatever I want-- and I don't ever want to install sketchy third party payment apps. Ever. Don't fuck around with your finances and technology dude. Seriously. You'll have your identity stolen. "with one single mandatory browser engine" That's a reason to not buy Apple products. It doesn't make them a monopoly. I dunno. "They abuse their power. It's that simple." I disagree. If they abused their power they wouldn't be wildly successful. They just make choices you don't like, and you choose to subject yourself to what you perceive as abuse by continuing to by products that you don't like. Or you don't own Apple products and you're just complaining for someone else that is happy with their Apple products-- and that's a bit nuts dude. So yeah, if Apple was spending their trillions of dollars preventing Samsung from selling phones. If they were threatening vendors. If they were attempting to purchase Samsung, Google, and all other Smartphone vendors. Those are things that TO SOME EXTENT would make me more open to the whole monopoly thing. But that's not happening, because they're not a monopoly. And my personal belief is that this is STRICTLY because the DOJ wants unfettered access to Apples encryption. That's what I believe this is about. Apple has been in the news a few times over the past several years for not going along with law enforcement without proper warrants. The DOJ doesn't like that. We know for a fact that American Intelligence operations have backdoors in a lot of tech. They're now suing Apple for being a "Monopoly" to scare them into cooperating with what I view as an increasingly totalitarian regime. And this will have the added effect of scaring the shit out of every other tech company on the planet. Because if the DOJ will go after Apple, they'll go after any and everyone.

There are things that Androids do better, and things that iPhones do better, but neither are "perfect" or even measurably superior to the competitor. Steam has become a control system for PC gamers, they could go to other stores GOG, Epic, Nintendo, Playstation. But Valve keeps providing, and the Steam Deck just adds leverage for gamers, not Valve. As for Apple there may be some legit antitrust case, like blocking third-party payment systems or exclusivity deals (these aren't actually covered by antitrust but should be). I don't think they should be required to support your firmware update preferences, like jsaux dock for SteamDeck requiring Windows when the deck is Linux.

Outside of specials and promos, steam does have a clause that says you cannot sell your game or software anywhere else, including your own website the doesn’t use steam to activate, at a lower price than you have it on steam. There has been cases where steam will remove your game off the steam market if the see your game is being sold for cheaper elsewhere, like Epic Games.

TBH I actually wish there was a way to BLOCK the firmware updates of the AirPods, as throughout the firmware updates the Noise Canceling and Transparency modes have gotten absolutely AWFUL. I've gotten replacements at the Apple Store for my First Gen Airpods Pro and they worked perfectly, until the firmware had a chance to update, then they went back to being quite ass at Transparency mode. I bought mine FOR the Transparency mode so I can hear myself speaking to my friends at night so I can control my volume better, but NO Apple wants me to upgrade the damn AirPods for the better experience...

Apple’s anti-consumer behavior isn’t limited to android users. There’s its own planned obsolescence preventing users from upgrading hard drives, replacing phone batteries etc. and even preventing newer devices working with older ones that go over the 5yr life cycle Apple builds into all its products. iPhone having issues syncing with your older Mac that can’t update to the newest OS - sorry guess you need a new Mac to download those photos.

Apple fans who want the garden to remain walled-in remind me of gamers who hate accessibility features and easy game modes. Nobody's forcing them to change how they play. But if a big part of what they like and what they enjoy is knowing some people are shut out, that they're part of an exclusive club… I'm sorry, I don't really consider that a valid reason not to have accessibility features or easy modes. Apple fans' sense of entitlement and elitism is not a good thing worthy of protecting, and neither is the superiority of people who sneer at people that they should just "git gud".
@andreivaughn1468
@andreivaughn1468 3 месяца назад
Nah that's not the same thing. Sucking at games is not a disability, accessibility is for the hard of hearing, or the color blind, etc, you know, for people with real disabilities, and games usually try to cater to disabilities, within reason, for example I remember "World at War" had color blindness features, and this is 2008, during the height of "toxic gaming". Games are an exclusive club, games are for people who like them and are willing to actually play them. Trying to make "everything for everyone" is how a company or a video game franchise loses it's appeal to it's original audience. I've played games with a range of difficulties, and games with only "one" difficulty. It's just the way some games are, you're not being discriminated because of a disability, that game is just not for you. I don't disagree with the Apple thing, but why are you conflating two different things together?

Do I have this wrong? Wasn't the first iPod completely incompatible with Windows because iTunes did not have a Windows version? And the thing only FireWire compatible at the time?
@h4tch3tt74
@h4tch3tt74 3 месяца назад
First ipod compatibility would say least have an argument that it's easier for Apple to build the itunes on their own hardware/software than on Microsoft software and all the potential configurations of windows machines. So it would obviously have taken more time. But I'm general yes

@DarthJarJar10 3 месяца назад
@@h4tch3tt74, thanks for the confirmation! And to be fair to the Apple of that day, by the 2nd generation or so, the iPod was USB compatible and iTunes had a Windows version. Makes one wonder when exactly things tipped to the anti-competitive side of the scale, even if it's just philosophically.

I'm the only Android user in my family (always have been since the Nexus S) and my family doesn't allow me to participate into the family group chat because they say they don't want to see the green bubble. Also, I got appleTV+ to watch the Godzilla series they had but it was really annoying how I had to grab an apple device every time I wanted to access it on my computer to approve access to my account... which isn't something you have to do on a mac or iphone or ipad, luckily for that I do have an iPad that is old which is the only way my family will let me participate in family group chat. I talk to family about it and they just say to get an iphone and repeat the arguments against Android from 2011, most of which also applied to iOS at that time like the multi-tasking arguments. They also argued how having Android is a security risk because the user can install apps outside the store if they want.

I’ve been an iPhone user for over a decade now. Buying a new phone every 3 years or so. And I really do love how it works for the most part. The simple interface. The reliability in an item I need to use for work or life on a daily basis. Overall high quality product and services. But despite that love of the product. There is absolutely no way I will defend their business practices that are very anti consumer and anti competitive. Doesn’t mean I won’t laugh at the epic lawsuit or similar stuff. Because despite how correct some of their points are. They are absolutely no better than Apple. At least if they had the ability to pull it off like Apple does.

You should consider doing a video about Apple anti competitive practices maybe somewhat directed towards the DOJ, help them understand the tech. Long shot but maybe help Apple users understand the effects of what Apple is doing.
@JimTheScientist

Apple still can not and has never been able to articulate an actual defense, they can not show how their anticompetitive measures are necessary and how any of them, at a technical level, would inhibit apple from making their products. That whole intersection of hardware and software statement is a big nothing burger, I absolutely hate any entity which chooses to make generic statements with no depth or elaboration. Imagine going to a lecture with a famous speaker and all they do is say a bunch of cliche statements, not offering a single story about how following anything they’re saying actually made an impact. You would feel scammed. Anyone who listens to that person is an idiot.

Hey Linus. A good "SFW" replacement for BS is Bovine Scat. It's even got the same acronym. Anyways, the revenue share thing with Steam vs Epic is, for me, a small issue compared to most others. Simply put, Valve did that 30% thing way back when the overheads for games in Retail Stores came up to being higher than 30% in overhead, that's one of the big ways Valve was able to attract games to their platform. As for Epic / Tim Sweeney, well he might **think** it's too high in the modern era, and you know what? Maybe he's right, I don't know. It's up to him to prove it by making Epic Games store have at least **somewhat** feature parity with Steam. As it stands now, Epic Games Store hasn't improved all that much since its initial inception.
