Are you a digital artist or illustrator and wondering if you should choose the New Apple iPad Air 2020 or iPad Pro for Procreate Illustration & Digital Art? Most of you might think they are the same, but they are not, so as a professional illustrator who uses the iPad and Procreate daily to work, I want to share my opinion as a digital artist.

A few months ago,, I checked the new iPad Air 2020 for procreate because I needed a new iPad. Also, lately, I got asked a lot about the new iPad Air 4th generation and if it's worth for artists and illustrators, So In the video, I will tell you my opinion on which one to buy and why depending on the type of artwork or use that you will give it.
Personally, I decided to go with the new iPad Pro 1TB 4th generation because it was more suited for me. With 6GB of RAM, it was just what I needed. But it might not be for you, and you can get the iPad Air, and it might work. So have a look at the video and the reasons why you might choose one over the other.

Just got mine in the mail today. ru-vid.comUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U The corners of the box was a little smashed but I think that’s more of the shipping’s fault. iPad was in perfect condition though. I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.

Important thing to notice - procreate recently updated their layer capacity for ipad air 4 2020 afaik, on release it was recognised as 3gb RAM device, now they adjusted it for 4gb RAM tl;dr - recently procreate unlocked more layers for newest air

I use Ipad Air 4 for sketches, inking, flat coloring etc and then move it to my macbook for the final touches using Photoshop, sometimes using kamvas 22 or use the iPad as secondary monitor because you know the touch gestures and apple pencil

This is such an informative video. I currently use a windows laptop and have it hooked up to a Wacom Cintiq 22 for professional work, but I want an ipad so I can have something portable to work on. The point about the RAM and number of layers you can use is really helpful, and something I'll consider when making my decision. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for such an informative video. As an architectural designer who illustrates on the side, I think the ipad air 64gb should suffice and help me transition from using a wacom tablet. Hopefully I'll be able to improve my skills and be able to sell some art prints in the near future!

I've been looking to purchase an ipad with a view to learning procreate at some point im 62 so listened to your video advice and went with a 2nd hand 12.9 128gb ipad pro and a apple pencil 1st gen so glad i did very fast machine and great for drawing and watching movies i would advise people to get the best they can afford i got mine for a great price the pencil was also secound hand came boxed with spare nib and lightning connecter both item didn't cost £300 and work well even flawlessly so far no regrets in getting the ipad or the pencil ...

So theoretically I could get the 256 IPad Air I can get the same experience as long as the refresh rate isn’t laggy from which I’ve done a lot of research into the latency between the iPad Pro and Air

if64 GB of disk is good for you, then the iPad Air is your choice!

Thank you for pointing out the differences. It’s expensive, but the iPad Pro is worth it. I don’t even use my regular computer for much of anything nowadays. I basically just use the iPad and play music from my laptop haha

@Rob DaFrog I know what you mean. I had a desktop for years and refused to switch to even a laptop for my main computer until 2018. Depending on what you use it for/if you build it yourself a desktop can be a better option for maximum power considering the price. I still think you pay extra for the Apple logo though. I’m not a gamer (so there’s a lot I don’t need from my computer), but I can edit/process 4K video on my iPad Pro no problem. In my opinion it’s only a few years before iPads and tablets catch up to computers or surpass them. Also, if you’re happy with the tech you have/you enjoy using desktops then there is nothing wrong with not switching. Save your money!

@Rob DaFrog Congrats on starting your minimalist journey. I've been working on my own for a couple years now, and my life is so much more stress free. Sounds like a great switch since your tech needs have changed, and I like your apple tv idea! I was an android/windows user before 2020, and I went for the iPad simply for the art/creative apps they offer (RIP adobe creative cloud haha). I think the apple pencil is really nice too. It's not a bad investment by any means, and their products also have a long lifespan. I'm happy I took the leap.

@Rob DaFrog If you want to cast to a bigger screen, I'd look into some other options as I've heard from multiple people, including my sister, that the box doesn't compare to the alternative options.

Hi there! Thank you so much for this video! Currently I use a Huion pen display with my MacBook Air for illustrating and animating. I want to be able to do that same work along with note-taking while on the go since I’m still in university. I’m leaning towards the iPad Pro 11” because of the storage so that I could also use adobe creative cloud apps, but I don’t know whether I should invest in it now. I also like the iPad Air because it’s cheaper and gets the job done enough for rougher works. I’m not exactly sure which one to go with and would like a second opinion 😅 Thank you

On Amazon I was getting the iPad air 4 and the iPad pro for the same price (if you max out the storage for the air) and I chose the iPad air because it gave me 265gb for the same price of the 128gb iPad pro 11 and I promise you if you never had a pro (like me) you'll love it and never realize the differences. I’m intermediate with my art, currently have the 2017 iPad pro 10.5 and I’m starting to see signs it may be getting tired. I think I’m gonna have to get a pro again because that latency & refresh rate being lower on the air would probably drive me nuts. I just wish the pro came in more colors.

I’m not really a beginner artist, but I am serious about doing professional digital artwork for illustrations, but I’ve been looking to invest in an iPad for drawing tablet mobility since later once Covid relieves I need to get a mobile tablet for college that can run Procreate, since my usual drawing tablet is stationary and is too big for travel. I don’t know whether to get the iPad Pro 11 inch with 128GB or the iPad Air 4 with 256GB. Should I prioritize storage capacity or performance quality and which would last me longer?

I would go for the cheapest option if it’s for a hobby. If priced the same, go for more space. Air 256gb instead of Pro 128 ⚡️

Storage doesn't affect RAM, and therefore not the number of layers either

Although RAM and SDD storage are not the same, Apple offers higher RAM with their higher end models - the ones with 1T have higher RAM, that’s their architecture for the Pro line - at least that’s what being shown in the benchmarks 😉

Stuck between the Ipad air 4 256gb and iPad pro 128gb coz they fall around the same price bracket/my budget. My general apps and lil bit of data cross around 100gb, so very skeptical with the 128gb ipad pro coz I wanna have these machines for atleast 4 to 5 years from now. The only thing why i am tilting towards the pro is the 120hz display, since I sketch a lot (currently on my iPad mini 5), use my iPad for music production, photo editing and loads of reading. would the refresh rate make any noticable difference during daily usage or is it of any good use 🤔 or just some "PRO" thing. Shall I go ahead with the "pro" but storage is an issue in the long run or will ipad air 4 256gb suffice for the next 5 years

Hi Asia, I just wanna ask does iPad air 4 supports Adobe photoshop and AI? If so, is 256GB enough? I'm NOT a professional digital artist btw. I'm going to major in advertising & branding next year, so I'm looking for an iPad that I can use for my assignment (like logo design, advertising storyboard and simple illustration etc). I thought of getting an iPad Pro at first, but as a student, I just simply couldn't afford it and I was told that the iPad Pro isn't necessary since I'm a beginner and that the iPad Air 4 would be a much better option. Hi 👋 to be 100% sure I would check Adobe’s compatibility page for the app you’ll be using, and I’ll chose the iPad what works best base on that :) and I would go with 512GB but that’s just me - hope it helps :)

There’s no space between the iPad and the pen any one of use can notice. You only see it with a camera up close, but is not something you’ll notice at all. Drawing with any iPad, the Air for example to the Pro is just amazing

why not export artworks to files so they get stored in icloud, and not use an external drive? icloud provides previews for .procreate files so it's easy to browse through them, and procreate opens artworks straight out of the files app, so it's all pretty quick and convenient

You can totally do that as well, I have a PC now and I don’t use iCloud (because I don’t like how it takes HD space) So the portable SD is for me simple, fast and it’s a good way to do backups in the meantime 👍🏼

Hi Ignacio, the Pro 11 is also good, but it’s a matter of personal preference. It’s all up to you. It might be hard now, but I would recommend going to a store and try it out 🤔

My iPad ( I think 7th generation) screen is damaged. Now looking into the iPad Air 4! I also use procreate. Does anyone know if all my apps will transfer to the new one?

Hi :) it depends, With the new one it will ask you if you want to move the apps or use it as a brand new iPad anyway, backup everything in a external drive just in case, as work will not be transferred by itself if not backed already on iCloud 👍🏼

As a full time artist I can highly recommend you getting the most affordable Pro version. I’ve got my used 9.7” IPad Pro about two years ago and its been my best companion-art tool since then! Still good for its price in 2020. Hope this helps 🐤👍

Never. I don't get how someone can bend an iPad honestly! If you want to avoid bending you just need to take good care of your working tools :) so, none of my iPads ever bended

I wonder if getting iPad Air 256GB would be better than waiting for the release of the iPad Pro 2021 128GB? in March or possibly April-May since they release 1-2 months later in the Philippines? I think I’ll get the Air 256GB at the end of February because waiting for a few months is quite tempting and I also don’t want to use cloud storage for the 64GB.

The highest the resolution and size of the canvas you work with, the fewer layers Procreate will give you. So for me, that I work with big formats, I get 6(ish)

A12Z came out 2020, I Know the A14 is better but not within the air 4 would have to be pro to do better. Respect the word “professional” and get the iPad Pro 2020. Keyword 2020. If you have a 2018 pro! You are fine for 5 years.
