I’m Asia Orlando, an illustrator and digital artist. I’m also the founder of Our Planet Week, a social media event for illustrators to address environmental issues.
I created my channel to help by sharing my experience about my career as an illustrator. I talk about the business side of illustration and the creative side with tutorials and other illustration tips. With New videos every other Week!
I will be uploading weekly videos about what it means to run your own creative business. From the creative process behind my illustrations, all the materials I use (artwork paper, packaging materials). Plus, important topics on how to earn money with illustration, what's the best way to post on social media, and some tips that helped me a lot on how to get illustration clients.
For the tutorial part, I will be doing some about illustration, digital illustration (advanced and for beginners), and a lot about Procreate
I spent weeks working on an illustration in Procreate, the resolution is fine and it’s in cmyk but when I printed it the colors were dark and I don’t know how to remedy this. I’ve been an artist for most of my life and this format is the one that I feel most like giving up on. It’s nearly impossible to get a good result. Can anyone offer any real advice?
Hi! I have this scanner and I wonder which settings you use? Whenever I try to scan anything that is in color, the colors get insanely changed. A brown monkey turns bright washed out orange etc. i bought this to be able to build my portfolio, but I can't scan anything now:(
That was SO motivating and sweet - thanks for reminding me on my goal in the end - that helped sooo much ahhh- I'll stick to it for 12 weeks and then return with my progress ❤
I always fear the ugly drawing in my sketchbook, and really when we think about it, what does it matter? That extra pressure we put on ourselves doesn't serve us! I love your sketchbooks Asia, and especially the blue pencil sketches. I quute like that idea of just sketching in one coloured pencil...I mught try that to loosen up my sketches and try to focus more on the practise and less on developing something in so much detail from the get-go. You are quickly becoming one of my favourite artist and teacher...can't wait to start the Domestika course of yours I just purchased. Thanks Asia🩷🌸👌
Asia, super interesting to get your take on this fair. Since I am in the US, I am just here to absorb your experience. I really appreciate your reality point of view, because it is so easy to get swept up in the excitement of an event like this without taking into consideration if it is really something that will work for you. Thanks for another great video!💫🧡✨
@@AsiaOrlandoI forgot to answer your question too. I’ve never attended and being in the USA I can’t afford to right now. But it’s reassuring to hear I’m not missing out for my career and there’s other ways to focus my time and resources to develop my illio career. Best to you 🫶🏼
I always felt like I was missing out when I wasn't attending this fair, since some of my peers did go to Bologna. But after your video I'm happy to not having wasted my time and money. Thanks for your perspective!
Have been once. Quite a few years ago now when I was still a student. The Illustrators Guild of Ireland sends a group and Children's Books Ireland and some of our publishers have a stall there each year. When I went I was pretty early in my time as an illustrator but I had a solid portfolio and printed a really nice portfolio book to bring a long. (I lost this book on the second day and had to print an emergency back up one) The event is huge, very corporate, seems like every company under the sun has a stand there. Definitely a big trade and rights buying thing. The illustrators kind of feel like little flies buzzing around all the big business. It's a valuable event for students to attend to just see how big this world really is. It's not a place you're going to pick up work from. The Illustrators wall is a bit of a token thrown out to get students and the likes to buy tickets and come along I think. I imagine a lot of material ends up going straight for recycling at the end of the fair. It's overwhelming. The lines for portfolio reviews where usually huge but I did manage to get some talks and sit downs with some people throughout the days. I felt some were just bored, some were probably told they had to do it, some took a little pity I guess. You know it is long days there for everyone involved. I was also a bit more shy back then but I now know it would be a great event to meet up with other illustrators from all over that you might only know from instagram. In the evenings the Irish delegation of illustrators would socialise and I was allowed tag a long then. One of my tutors at the time was also in this group so that was nice. In short, take a nice holiday in Italy and maybe pop in for a few hours to meet some illustrators of art directors etc that one might know from online but who are rarely all in the same place. I don't think any developing illustrator would ever need to go to it. Thanks for the review!
Can you join as a self publisher? I thought not. And it costs a lot to build a company and pay for the stand. Is there a list of companies who join to this fair somewhere?
Muchas gracias a ti Lis
Ah... It's great to have found someone who has been through the same tests that I was! : ) I also spent a long, long time trying out professional print houses, and testing printing at home. Only to end up printing my own stuff on demand, same as you, in order to get the quality I wanted. It costs so much time and money to find the perfect combo of: printer, ink, paper, suppliers, quality, and price. And for everybody's artwork it's different, as you say. : ) It was expensive and time-consuming, but ultimately I am very happy with the quality of my prints. Thanks for the great video.
So happy to see you back! Yes, to all your video ideas…love watching everything you put out! This was such a great video. The information and insights are just what I need to hear. And I would love to see you create your own illustration course! Thanks for returning to YT, you were missed!✨🤩💫👏🏽
Thank you sooooo muuuuch! I’m getting back into the flow of things with a bunch of new ideas lined up! :) Next video is all edited and almost ready to be posted! it’s a kind of comment that gives motivation and energy, thank you so so much for that!:)
Wonderful concise no nonsense information! Thanks! Coincidentally I was just emailed by a publisher to start another book for them just as I began watching this video! :D
