Apple ProRaw vs JPEG SHOOTOUT

I use RAW since my Canon PowerShot G3 back in 2002 and I also own a iPhone 12 Pro Max - I'm still experimenting with the different modes and lenses - but what are you writing here is exactly what I thought but was afraid to say. …and more. I can make any RAW file from my DSLR cameras looks 100 times better than any JPEG with no problem whatsoever, even with my eyes closed, witch I can't on my computer with these “ProRAW” files, neither does she. Files can get softer because they don't have a sharpen yet, but her color editing it’s crap compared to the the JPEG file.

Not entirely correct. You can edit "ProRAW" that are taken with the built-in camera app with another RAW editor. My short testing is not, at least for the Moment app (I don't have the Halide). Moment folks, please clarify.

@@rff8 I'm not even talking about third-party apps. To simplify the equation, I photographed and edited with the native iOS app. With these Pro-RAW files it is impossible or very difficult to work with. This iPhone takes great pictures but the Pro-RAW is a great piece of sh*t and no one has the courage to say so. I understand that most users are hearing about RAW files for the first time, as a result of that, anything will do. Once on the computer, it's another step towards total disgrace. When I open the files in Adobe Camera RAW, most of them are so under-exposed that it is impossible to recover anything whatsoever. The last Pro-RAW I edited on the native iOS app giving only a little touch-up to saturation and lightness, just for testing and the photo got more blurry and believe it or not, warped. Great phone and awesome photos for a smartphone but the Pro-RAW as it stands today, it is a real fiasco. We have to say that the emperor is naked!

@@PGNogueira The reason why the ProRAW is a bit difficult to deal with in a 3rd party software is because they don't have the profiles yet of the iPhone's ProRAW and therefore all the corrections are to be done manually. For a casual user, the compressed format (JPEG/HEIF) is better because all the corrections (exposure, colors, lens distortion, etc) has been automatically applied. But, for experienced user, they can have a wider headroom for editing with ProRAW.

I just started photography and for me it was rly usefull couse ive learned so much.Now of course if ur not interested in it i think its great that they added those time stamps.

THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US WHO COULDN'T PUT INTO WORDS what you did so precisely. The actual tech is going to be awesome, but this wasn't it. And because this wasn't it, there was NO reason to shoot in "raw". Come on, you can all do better. I remember when Moment actually cared more about the photography rather than the "brand influencer status". And it seems many who work there still do and geek hard. But there is this mainstream media shift to the company, that is ruining the geek part and letting videos like this out and then keeping them out when they are incorrect. This was clear when you started selling Profoto's over priced "mobile" lights at ridiculous prices instead of keeping to your affordable best quality motto. Hopefully this changes in the future. I miss being able to get behind you and your company's motto. Never too late :)

ProRAW already includes the so-called “computational aspect” regardless what DNG editor you use to open it. Lightroom simply wasn’t yet updated to read the appropriate metadata tags to show properly on first open, but all the data are still there for you to work with.

@@hojx It isn't actually. You cannot get to those layers to edit them manually. They are all baked into a DNG until adobe updates. Which they haven't.

@@dantecooper4705 it’s basically Raw vs Raw. Only that ProRaw is optimized for apple. And the other raw, is made for all platforms which means not the best. Raw and proraw give you advantages behind what the eye can see. That means these raw files capture more details then what your eyes sees, making them to controll the color over.

I agree, I don’t post process my photos and don’t shoot raw. I looked into post processing years ago and wasn’t really interested. I know you can have a special purpose and then shoot raw and edit later but I didn’t want to do this on every photo.

Yes, you can export it as a high quality jpeg but then you lose the ability to further edit the picture in raw format. It will be a jpeg like the one that comes out of the camera.

Both will be saved you can always go back re-edit

Yeah. ProRaw has its benefits but it really only shows in very difficult lighting scenarios. I think the 'chunkiness' she's describing is just over sharpening that is an issue with most smartphone cameras. It seems in iPhone 13 we can now set profiles which i hope will eliminate this issue.

@@mistletoe88 styles didn’t get us there cause it doesn’t allow us to manage sharpness or textures. And reducing sharpness after taking the photo just don’t work as in raw captures 😿

Yeah, it's a phone, with a tiny sensor. Even if IA makes sometimes "miracles", physics laws don't lie. It is where classic large sensor cameras remain way more capable.

@@smaeyl certainly. But what’s killing me is the amount of confirmation bias in these iPhone comparisons. Despite the fact that ProRAW currently has a lot of shortcomings, I feel like reviewers fail to point them out quite often.

I thought the ProRAW did stack images internally thus it should have much less noise than the simplest single shot RAW, no?

They don’t at first open show/preview it correctly but all the data is still there. You essentially just need to recover the shadows and highlights.

@@HCG Actually, Lightroom and Lightroom Classic were updated today with profiles for Apple's ProRaw files! I saw a demo by Terry White and the profiles made big changes for the better to his sample images compared to the original Adobe profiles.
