Everytime I see a company pushing for VR I remind myself that several of these billionaires have admitted that they think VR is the best way to distract the public from them! my friends used to laugh at me when we were in high school and i would go on my rants about how were we gonna end up like Wall-E (our teacher used to always talk about self driving cars) but ive received so much validation in the last year alone im never letting it go 💀

I think it's somewhere in between, it's an amazing new technology but exceptionally new and hasn't yet reall reached the point that it's worth it monetarily or from a use-case perspective

I love your friend's passion, its kinda inspiring! This would be super cool... If it didnt need a cord attached to your asshole waiting to be ripped out, and if it was 5x smaller. I can already tell that face hugger would be claustrophobia inducing for me.

Even with the "see-through" mode active, so you can still see the world in front of you, this still entirely removes a person's peripheral vision. I don't see a way wearing these while walking around in public could ever be considered "safe." You would either be a great target for a robbery or potentially get hit by a car, neither of which would be worth lugging the headset around.

I am/was an Augmented Reality enthusiast, but new AI owned and controlled by huge corporations has me seriously feeling very nervous about getting used to such an intimate connection with technology. These new AI are marketing monsters. They are not aligned and these for-profit companies are not trying to align them. They are only trying to ensure dominance and control

I genuinely don't understand the real use of an Apple Vision Pro when other devices can do the same features already and don't cost that much. You're pretty much just paying for a less functional Meta Quest because there aren't any controllers so you can't play games. Other than that it's just for uncanny FaceTime calls but at 3x the price of a top tier iPhone that you still have to have for that feature to work.

I think it could have been a really good device if they'd worked with the companies making their main productivity programs for macOS to immediately have vision pro apps or to work with macOS apps rather than ipadOS as the compatibility layer. Considering it has an m2 in it, those changes would have enabled them to have vision pro immediately replace a laptop or desktop, so all you'd need to bring with you would be the vision pro. That could potentially have made it actually worth the $3500 (though not really considering a decent macbook is like $1500).

As a vr enthusiast there is definitely potential if apple can get the product down in price. It's very cool tech but ultimately I doubt it will dramatically change our society.

These are very much still beta products. Your baggy sweater was likely causing the AI to have difficulty making out your hand. The lighting was also terrible for what you were doing. It wasn't you, it was the tech

Scared for the kids young kids whose parents buy this. That’s the only downside to me. It has a learning curve to be useful and that means the kids get to watch their parents acting like disconnected robots for god knows how long. Then after that, of course the “productive” hype parents are just gonna be staring at their kids through the glass as the kids stare back at their lifeless glass eyes lol. I considered buying one because I have degenerative neck issues that started in my 20’s. In my 40’s it’s almost impossible to look down for any period of time without pain and eventual headaches. Sadly, all we do is look down now though. Tablets, phones. Monitor/keyboards, reading, etc.. However, I’ll wait until we get a “less VR” and more like glasses, headset. I have kids and I want them to see ME, not this dystopian future strapped to my face lol

i just dont understand the appeal of this product at all. i was binging review videos of these the other night because i just could not understand what the hype for augmented reality for anything outside of video gaming is. like, i can make my computer screen a floating window within my world? thats cool! but i have zero need or want for that. literally what is the point? you could argue convenience, but i feel like with smartphones alone we've reached such a high level of convenience in life that trying to improve it any further is a waste of time. i

Interesting ideas from Apple, but VR is niche and the experiences shown in this video are mostly replicable with their current lineup of phones, tablets, and laptops. I would be curious to see what someone who has used other VR devices thinks. I have a quest headset (purchased before meta bought the company) and it's not that the technology isn't impressive, it's that it doesn't have as many things to do on it as a PC or another console. The capabilities are there, but not many people are currently programing for it (you can't just port software/games over like between other devices/consoles). There's a solid five things I do on it every once in a while, which I am fine with because of the relatively low price point I got it at. Apple is trying to make more of an augmented reality here with the floating panels over normal vision, and offers true virtual realty as a secondary option. Overall, I think the programs and software will make or break this device, not how impressive the tech is at a first glance. As it stands, it doesn't warrant such a price point (imo); but maybe in a few years, enough developers will make more immersive experiences that can't be replicated on other devices.

Btw I'm 99 percent sure your problem with pinching was that in the vision pro you have to be looking with your eyes exactly at the element you want to interact with, you can't be looking up in one spot and pinching down in another spot

the real question for me is not whether this tech will forever change the society, but whether we actually want those changes. I feel like more and more people are becoming aware of the addictive nature of screens and social media and here is Apple being like "here you go, we strapped it onto your face for you!". takes glued to your screens to a whole new level ahaha
