The opening for What’s New Scooby-Doo did not need to go as hard as it needed to be. Like Jesus. Also Hot Dog Water is voiced by Linda Cardellini which I love.

I feel like the original Velma was like a blank slate. She had hints of personality, but due to the nature of the show she was probably the least characterized of the gang. While other characters were more developed, Velma's purpose for existing was mainly plot-related: she didn't have to be the funny comic relief like Shaggy or Scooby, she didn't have to be the strong masculine guy who can set traps and chase bad guys like Fred, she didn't have to be the independent girl of the group like Daphne. No, her role was to be the "smart one" who can logically explain the solution of the mystery to the audience, and that's not a personality trait, it's just a narrative role. That, I believe, made it easier for people to project their own interpretations and feelings onto her, and when it came time for new people to make the next show or the next movie, or even the next videogame, all that baggage that they, completely arbitrarily, attached to her character, well, it just stuck and it's now an integral part of who Velma is. Even the queer thing: I believe it's fair to say that she wasn't originally intended to be queer. Heck, she probably wasn't originally intended to be anything at all! But then, over time, that aspect of her character evolved more and more, and now she's queer. Simple as that. I find this whole discussion very, very interesting, because it's not very common to have a character in media whose evolution reflects the evolution of society and pop culture itself in such a stratified way. She's very unique in this regard, and I can't wait to see where she goes next.

The reason why Velma was so hot in the films, was because it was originally going to be a spoof movie in vain of Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie, but with Scooby Doo. But I think with the remake/revamping tread of old cartoons and shows, it was more profitable to make them directed at families. I mean there is a scene referencing how people think Shaggy smokes weed, Fred talking about how he also finds “nerds” hot to (that actually is pretty mature for a kids film, no cap), and just a lot of self referential humor that is also abundant in spoof films. And the fact the cast has played the characters many times on Robot Chicken, which is pretty cool.

Yeah, I read somewhere that James Gunn had written a script that was meant to be R-rated, for the adults who grew up watching Scooby-Doo when they were kids. At the last minute (like, literally a few weeks before shooting started) the studio decided that the new direct-to-video Scooby movies were selling so well, that they had the potential to make more money on the movie if they targeted kids instead of adults (honestly, not the worst logic). I believe at least Sarah Michelle Geller tried to walk out of the movie at this point, since the script she had signed on for was being cut to pieces, but Freddie Prinze Jr. convinced her to stay because she'd already blocked out the time in her schedule and she might as well accept the money. Gunn has said that the mandate to make it family-friendly came so late that there wasn't actually time for a re-write; they just cut out any adult content from the script, which left the movie feeling very uneven, since random lines or whole scenes were now just gone. He said he wrote an R-rated movie, it was shot as a PG-13 movie, and was edited down to PG for release. Say what you will about those flicks, but they had the absolute perfect casting. I mean, Matthew Lillard was so good as Shaggy he's been his official voice actor for the cartoons for over a decade now. And Linda Cardellini deserved that Oscar.

@@ethansloan I actually didn’t know all that, but I knew the direction change happened, just not that late into production. And I agree, the cast was perfect.

I want to point out that even though it may seem like the whole "Velma is queer" thing is a modern idea, it actually has its roots in the very inspiration for her character. Scooby-Doo creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears have said they based Velma on the character of Zelda Gilroy from the tv show The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Zelda was played by actress Sheila Kuehl, who later became California's first openly gay state legislator. She wasn't publicly out at the time of Scooby's development, but she had embraced her queer identity since before she acted on Dobie Gillis. Look up some clips of her performance and there is strong queer energy coming off her. Of course, at the time, square America wouldn't have picked up on that. I think it's wonderful that Velma can finally follow in Sheila's footsteps and be out and proud.

@@jordysyoutubechannel It gets even odder-for better or worse, Zelda is portrayed as straight, with a crush on the Fred analogue, Dobie; but the way she /handles/ that crush is the obvious template for Velma's relationship with Shaggy in the early Mystery Inc episodes. It's even more disorienting when the Shaggy analogue, Maynard, is also in the same room: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Be0eTnCd_1g.html

Very interesting video! I never thought of Velma like that. She does really represent a lot of different people. She is seen as a dweeb, an outsider, a nerd (or someone very smart), someone who is very sarcastic or witty, but also so relatable because she os clumsy. She makes a lot of us feel seen. From what I remember, Shaggy is a pothead, Fred is just a jock and Daphne is the hot girl. Most of the other characters feel more stereotypical throughout the years but Velma continues to grow. When I was younger, I always felt like she was just a "side character" to the bunch but maybe she is and has always been the main character of the series??? I feel like I need to go back and rewatch everything now. Also, I feel like Velma has had much of a stronger cultural effect than the other characters. If someone dresses up like Velma, we automatically know. She has a very recognizable outfit. If someone were to dress as Shaggy or Fred, you wouldn't even know they were in costume. If someone dressed like Daphne, I feel like you could just confuse her as some generic 70's hippie or go go dancer costume. Velma is just far more iconic!

@mysticdigital5936
@mysticdigital5936 9 месяцев назад
Horrendous take honestly. I agree that Velma has a lot of depth, the video was great, and she represents lots of people. But reducing any of the mystery gang to a stereotype or calling them shallow is flat out wrong. Fred is a jock, yes, but he's also goofy, a lover of traps, loves his friends and his van. Daphne is not just "a hot girl," she super smart just in different eays than Velma, resourceful as heck(tricking finger print scanners with her makeup kit), a good singer, and even at times the leader of the gang. Shaggy and Scooby are a bit more simple, but they are the courageous cowards, food lovers, and hesrt of the gang. Velma is amazing for sure, but none of the gang are simple or ledt behind when you look through Scooby Doo as a whole or even just watch some iterations closely.

You should have talked about Velma being Japanese in the Cartoon Network movies, and her being German Jewish as revealed in Frankencreepy and Mystery Incorporated, and how Mindy Kaling erased that (and she did it on purpose since she's antisemitic). Also you need a Daphne video (and if you do talk about her Scottish and French ancestry and how Mindy erased that too), or a Hex Girls video

The history of _all_ of the main cast (sans the title character, ironically) is super weird to me. There are just soooo many different, yet valid, interpretations of all of them because the first few separate shows that used them laid this groundwork for extrapolation of their characters. Like, take for example "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo" (my personal favorite when I was a kid, to be honest): You've got Shaggy, Daphne, Scoob, and (sigh) Scrappy with a _radically_ different approach to character traits. Shaggy is slightly competent? Daphne's turned into some kinda femboss? Scooby's still the same, of course, but because Shaggy's not a complete doofus this time around Scooby's raised up as well since they tend to come as a package. From that point on, you start to get changes to both Fred and Velma as well. They all start morphing into actual characters instead of archetypes, and I believe this is honestly the first series to actually pull it off. The movies helped, obviously, but all those changes had already been worked into the prior shows. But I think the main thing is that because they were all archetypes at first, the cultural zeitgeist was able to imprint certain characteristics onto them with relative ease. We can see how that worked out looking back on it, but it took a _really_ long time to actually manifest. Scooby-Doo's been around since the freakin' 1960's! "13 Ghosts", when all this character development started happening, wasn't until the mid-1980's! But then once it started, it literally has not stopped changing. I don't know what kind of characters they'll be in 5, 10, even 20 years from now, but I _can_ tell you that they'll all be completely different from what we're even seeing from them _now._ EDIT: Also just wanted to say that the Supernatural x Scooby-Doo crossover was just..That's just amazing. I cannot think of a better use of crossover potential in all of television. I'm pretty sure one of the Winchesters banged Velma, too, which when you consider that the episode outright states everything really _is_ a cartoon - and not just an animated view of reality - it brings up a lot of really wild questions.
