In this user requested video, we will use Script Editor to write an AppleScript handler to get a path to the most recently modified file of a given folder. We'll use a couple of different shell commands (ls, grep and head) available on macOS. You'll also see how to pipe output from one shell command to another to refine the results. I hope you find this tutorial educational.

I enjoy the interactive element of the instruction in your videos. AppleScript is a fun and powerful language, and your teaching style is engaging. Nice work.

I want to write an AppleScript that announces the name of an email sender when the email arrives. Can you help with this?

Hey wondering if you can help me out. Is it possible to create a script that adds line breaks at the end of every line, in pages?

Hey Shawn, thanks for writing me. Yes, that should be possible. When you say “at the end of every line”, what are you defining as a “line”?

@@ClickingKeys I don't know how to define that. Let me see if I can explain. I am copying and pasting documents from pdf into pages for formatting and then copying and pasting from pages into an excel document. I would consider lines to be sentences, but it could also be 1 word and they don't always have punctuation at the end of them. hope this was helpful and not convoluted

Honestly, you might be able to skip Pages. Once the info is copied to your pasteboard your script would have access to it and you could possibly do everything you needed within the script, including putting it into Ecxel.

@@ClickingKeys the copying from pdf isn't always a straight forward thing for whatever reason, sometimes the words get jumbled I'm working on playwright scripts so characters name sometimes get separated from their dialogue. It's easier to fix the mess in pages then paste to numbers *meant numbers not excel mentioned in previous post *

I'm really disappointed. I thought this playlist was going to be a BEGINNERS playlist that was BUILDING on the previous videos in the list. Instead it just randomly jumps here to user requests and far more complicated scripts with names and properties not previously mentioned. Bummer. I was with you up to this point (Quit Handler), and every video after this is basically incomprehensible. Seems like you lost your initial focus for this playlist.

Thank you for your feedback @Rocadero. I felt I had given a pretty good overview of the basics of AppleScript and I wanted to give some real world examples of ways to use AppleScript to actually accomplish tasks. Adding the additional videos was meant to inspire and provoke thought.

@@ClickingKeys Another unexplained issue is using Shell Scripts, which seems like incorporating another language that I have no idea how to use or why I need to use them. I would hope you could go back and explain these for basics for beginners.
