This moves too fast. Seems designed for Apple nerds only and not for a virgin word processosr. Also, how come my previous comment was removed??? You censor comments? Really?
Thanks so much for your insight, I appreciate you sharing your feedback. No, I have not removed any comments, at times RU-vid will automatically remove comments when it feels they are inappropriate. Sorry if your comment was deemed inappropriate by Google.
Hi I’m trying to write a script in script editor but I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Its @echo off ipconfig /all > report.txt echo Press any key to view report pause > nul notepad report.txt Not sure if you can tell me where I’m going wrong. Please.
Hey melissagooden9915, what language are you trying to write in? That is not AppleScript, it looks more like a shell script. You can use shell commands in AppleScript, but you have to preface the command with the phrase do shell script. For example… do shell script “ipconfig /all > report.txt”
Thanks for this. The DELAY option you mention is related to waiting for the controller to disappear before the video plays. Is there any way to program it so the controller does not appear at all? Thanks!!
Probably not, but you could program quicktime to hide itself after opening and commencing the reproduction of the file, i.e. immediately after it starts playing
Yeah, I’ve noticed RU-vid seems to do that. I have a playlist with them in order. Learn to AppleScript (for beginners/noobs) ru-vid.com/group/PL5iB9WEZe2j04doUAKVxqxaCv3JJ8TxQr Also, I believe at the end of each video should be a link to the next video. Hopefully I didn’t screw that up.
Appreciate, but can get to first base. First, do I need the Utilities Folder box on the right. When I started recording the record button is greyed out, and there is no folder on the bottom right. Need AppleScript for dummies to get the very basics. Thx, I'll try to catch up. Update: Got the record to start but can't stop it and can't figure out how to tell it to add a new folder.
This is amazing! You are the only REAL GOOD source about AppleScript! This language will survive the next 100 years, because its a REAL automation. I really hope to see more of you in this series in future! Thank you!!!!
Actually it occurs to me that this has nothing to do with Capture One. I just want to export images from Capture One and then insert the filename into the title.
Hey Steve, I’ve never tried to script Capture One. From Script Editor, you can try and open a dictionary for Capture One to see what options it has, if any.
I'm having trouble picking this up. I'd like to use AppleScript to insert my Capture One 22 image filename into the title so I can organize my photos in my Mac Photos album. I know this can be done but I don't know if I have enough years left to figure it out.
I watched this video for 1 hour straight... 1 HOUR!! And when i dragged and dropped my files, typed the new name and clicked "ok".. even though it said it did.. IT DIDNT RENAME THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT DIDNT RENAME THE FILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome content. I learned a lot. I wonder: after "re-naming" some files, why I cannot "undo" the re-naming action? Command + Z does not work. Any thoughts on that? Thank you so much in advance.
The actions of this AppleScript are not managed by the OS the same way the actions of a user are handled. The script is not calling in the Finder to do the rename, so the Finder does not know about the action the same way it would if a user made the change. Essentially, the Finder is the part of the OS that is managing the ability to “undo” something, and in this case the Finder didn’t initiate the change.
Hello I have a question. How do you make different buttons lead to different part? Like if you choose "ok" you get a thank you but if you choose "more" you get more information? Is there a way to do that?
Hey galaxy_glitch, thanks for the question. Yes, you can do what you’re asking about. When you display a dialog with custom buttons, you can set your variable to “button returned of” to see what button the user selected. Example: set btn to button returned of (display dialog “Please select a button”) In that example, btn will be either “OK” or the value of any buttons you add to your dialog.
No doubt an "off the wall" question based on total misunderstanding, but here goes. I am writing a Pages document and find myself needing one of a few hundred phrases one or more times on each of maybe 50 pages. I expect to be creating several more documents needing the same phrases. Turns out the phrases (actually bird names) have a 4-letter "code". What I'd like to do is create a "macro" so that while in Pages, I type the code, and the "macro" would look up the code and render the phrase. That does not seem possible with AppleScript, as I cannot determine how to invoke a "macro" from inside Pages. I suppose it might be possible to write the document using the codes and post process it so that an AppleScript could look at the text to find the codes and then do the lookup, but I'm not sure. Any advice?
You actually don’t need AppleScript at all for what you’re trying to do. Your Mac can do it with built in functionality of the OS called text replacements. Head to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard, then click Text. You should be able to create the type of shortcuts you’re describing.
@@ClickingKeys Wow! I looked into it, and it does work. I got to thinking that I might not want it system-wide, and Pages has a very similar text replacement preference; and I can turn it on/off easily. Thanks very much for the heads-up. And the timeliness of the reply!
Another excellent instructional video. Only just discovered these but they are the best AppleScript tutorials I've found. Only comment would be that audio seems quite muted - easily rectified by increasing the volume - as long as I remember to turn it down for the next video! :-)
Been watching through this playlist so as to brush up on my basic AppleScript knowledge. Nice videos - short, punchy, and to the point, and well explained.
I ran into all sorts of problems - you didn't show your app and how its made, when loading to launchctl, I got "Warning: Expecting a LaunchAgents path since the command was ran as user. Got LaunchDaemons instead." In may other points I have no idea what you are doing. Tutorials should assume that someone has no knowledge :D
I'm really disappointed. I thought this playlist was going to be a BEGINNERS playlist that was BUILDING on the previous videos in the list. Instead it just randomly jumps here to user requests and far more complicated scripts with names and properties not previously mentioned. Bummer. I was with you up to this point (Quit Handler), and every video after this is basically incomprehensible. Seems like you lost your initial focus for this playlist.
Thank you for your feedback @Rocadero. I felt I had given a pretty good overview of the basics of AppleScript and I wanted to give some real world examples of ways to use AppleScript to actually accomplish tasks. Adding the additional videos was meant to inspire and provoke thought.
@@ClickingKeys Another unexplained issue is using Shell Scripts, which seems like incorporating another language that I have no idea how to use or why I need to use them. I would hope you could go back and explain these for basics for beginners.
Hello, thank you for this video. How can I create a variable to hold a name of a file so that I can use that variable elsewhere (like within a block that tells Photoshop)? Thank you for your help.
Excellent. Thanks a lot. Im interested to manage the app "Mail", getting the information inside of every email to capture with the clipboard and after use it in other apps, for example to "Notes", "LogSeq, etc
Excellent videos. I am following your course and would like to thank you for the fantastic input. Please don't stop producing them. Thank you very much again
Could you please do a video how to change output device by using some hot keys? For example I have my headphones connected and I'd like to apply some combination to switch output from current device let's say my MacBook speakers to headphones and opposite.
Hey brixcorder, thanks for the interest in my channel. If you take a look at this video, it should help you with your question. AppleScript Tutorial : File Formats ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZpTwKZZ87OU.html
