Everyone bitching about how much he talks and whatever else...It's a FREE LESSON! Take it or leave it, it's your choice. From the looks of it, several people that have been playing for decades have learned from it. Not everyone took music in school or has had professional lessons. Be thankful you have Eric as a source, and a damn good one at that.

hi Erich. Mike here. I watched your video about 4 times . REPETITION REINFORCES LEARNING. I see what you mean about looking at a concept from different perspectives. I have come across the same theory you covered in this video but it was presented in such a way that there was no continuity for some reason . My brain seems to like seeing other perspectives in order to retain and understand the theory better. Your video for me was an "Ah Haw " moment. So congratulations !! Carry on.

Bravo Erich,by the way I know a trick for knowing the notes on the board relative to the dots that I’ve never seen you or any other teacher use, ... 6th string f, first fret, third fret, first dot g, second dot a, third dot b, then fifth string first dot, c, follow the alphabet from b with the dots, c, d, e, fourth string, f,g, a, etc. Cheers.

I've been "playing" guitar for 51 years. I've never reached the musicianship I hoped to get to. This is an eye opener. I never could figure out how some guitarists could just dive into a song they never heard and everything they played was perfectly fantastic. I am going to practice this in hopes that I could finally reach the point I've always wanted play at. Thank you!

Eric- as a teacher you keep jumping from a level of beginner to advanced. If your teaching your subscribers this “Magic Pattern” assuming that they do not know this already. Then you are simply overlooking the fact that the musicians who do not know the difference between a major and minor chord, will be able to understand your magic pattern. On the contrary the ones who do understand this Magic Pattern you so call it will already know this. Simply based on the fact that this is how all music theory is taught. I just thought you should know that because you said this pattern doesn’t get taught anywhere. I learned this as a Junior in high school during my music theory classes. Please don’t take this message the wrong way, because I’m just simply point out a fact. I think it is great that people like You at least take the time to make these videos to share with everyone! Thanks for sharing.

Erich - I watched parts of your Magic Pattern video dozens of times, trying to figure out "Which chord form when?" until I had a light bulb moment about something you don't mention... The major and minor chord forms you play in the major scale are directly tied to whether the major scale note is on the 6th, 5th or 4th string. Puzzle solved and yes, Mind Blown. I also figured out how the number chart ties in and it became more than just a memory exercise. I spent hours trying to tie this mess together until I figured this out - the string the note is on points to the chord form. Do a video on this "root string thing" because it ties sooo much together. Thanks for all the hard work.

this is most certainly cool because just days ago you blew my mind with the lesson on how to find chords in any key inside UGS course using the 1,4,5,6,2,3. This expands on that and really takes all the confusion out of the process. In another video last year you and Papa Stash taught us how to outline chords for solos, so what you said today really helps me know how to utilize it. My mind gets it, my fingers are slow. lol

All good if you want to play the major 7th major scale - but most rock & blues songs use the Dominant (flat b7) seventh degree. This is also known as the mixolydian mode. This system (above) is also known as CAGED - all major scale stuff. As a long time blues player, I have seen a few guitarists stuck in CAGED and unable to play the blues (but I have see far more stuck in the blues unable to play CAGED.) - The "key" is to understand the difference.

If it weren't for the fact that I have watched Ben Eller's channel (specifically "This is why you suck at guitar, lesson 16- you don't know what chords go in every key") I would have had absolutely no clue what you are talking about in this video. It has however, highlighted some glaring holes in my knowledge of basic music theory and forced me to acknowledge that despite having played for years, I can't honestly claim to be anything more than a beginner.

You can take this one step further! Going down 3 half steps from a major key gives you the relative minor. Relative minor of C is Am (3 half steps) D - Bm, E - C#m, etc... you can find the relative major of a minor key the same way.
