I honestly agree with Dave saying they are beating a dead house just because someone did something to you doesn’t mean you have to continue the cycle and honestly sometimes they beat a point for no damn reason criticizing something is fine but you don’t need to beat a single point to the ground

If you can’t tattoo “dark” skin, you don’t deserve to be ink master. That guys skin wasn’t even dark. But in general, artists should know tricks for approaching different skin colors. Drawing on white paper with dark ink is going to be different than black paper with dark ink. The approach should be different too, and artistry compels you to do know the difference and execute.

I respect Dave for standing up for someone he loves, respects, and cares about. I personally didn't like neither of the tattoos but I do like Dave's tattoos more. Dave respects who he learned from.

I always hate how they complain about having to tattoo a darker complexion. You should be able to tattoo all skin tones. They can’t change it, they just want a tattoo they’re gonna be happy with!

Dude was slighty dark tan,, not dark skin at all, sure color pops on pale skin more but if you're too scared to do color on darker skin then you shouldnt be in a competition

I know there’s a lot of “Dave” comments but it’s still not enough. He was more upset than his master who lost… what a stand up dude and you can tell Dave is the dude that would never rat you out or go behind your back. That’s a rare quality, salute to him!

don't trust anyone that says color doesn't work on dark skin... it 1000% does, some "artists" are just too lazy to learn minimal technique outside their zone. 💤

I just rewatched the episode, Earl effectively told Dave afterwards to back down a bit cause "I can stand up for myself and fight my own battles" which Dave knew he clearly couldn't. It's no wonder he went a lot further in the competition than his supposed Master.

Dave was absolutely right. Tattoo artists are humans, they're going to screw up. It's going to happen, even in prestigious competition and when you're an esteemed artist. When an artist forgets something in real life with real clients, the client points it out and the artist just adds it in later, no harm done. They ragged on him for an EASILY fixed mistake that happens all the time. Sometimes these judges say things to make me question how much they know about tattooing professionally.

Matt and Katie’s support for each other is so lovely, it’s wonderful seeing how much the apprentices and masters appreciate one another

lol that one guy said bright colors don't work on dark skin. I'm darker than the guy he tattooed and MY colorful tattoos are vibrant. I've got red, orange, green, blue, even YELLOW and PINK and WHITE and they all pop. The white has faded, but white ink fades on everyone. It would have been better if he just admitted he doesn't have experience tattooing darker skin.

Yo 5:46 that skull on tattoo 1 is AMAZING. I get the judges point to a degree but I'd rather have the left tattoo, by FAR. That shading to give the skull depth and the three dimensional feel is so freaking good!

It seems a lot of the "masters" learned from their own mentors then once they went out on their own stopped increasing their own skill, but now in the modern world the new apprentices have access to way more learning beyond their current master.

I had the honor of working with Dave as a piercer for the entire summer of 2014. He is one of the most Ride or Die men that I have had the pleasure of knowing.

Katie and Matt are what you should look for in artist. Helping eachother out even when they’re competing against eachother .

It's obvious the judges can pick favorites on this show so for Dave to stand up and speak his mind was really commendable, he risked brownie points with them but gained real respect from anyone watching.

Respect to the apprentice at 5:06 I feel like thats what other people are lacking with when it comes to their success. Some of them forget to give recognition to the ones that were around them at the time of their struggles. Friends,family, haters etc. Like there is no way you got to where you're at without these outter forces directing you to that path.

just because someone’s skin color is “dark”, does not mean you can’t tattoo it. there is a thing called “light colors.” that’s just laziness. they shouldn’t be ink master if they can’t give someone a tattoo just because of their skin tone.

There is absolutely no shame in having your protege meet or surpass your skill level. After all, the protege was chosen because their skill and hunger to learn is inspiring. This ultimately displays the ability of the mentor to teach and develop the protege. Not being shown appreciation and acknowledgment is the kick in the 🥜. Cheers 🍻 Y’all.

With Dave at that point it's no longer about the tattoo it's about having respect for another person

If u can’t do all skin colors/ shades ur not an ink master especially color especially if you’re a tattoo artist and don’t think color can go on dark skin you don’t know how to tattoo at all it’s just like working on white paper you have to maneuver correctly to make the colors stand out with the skin it’s just like doing it on light skin or white skin if you don’t know how to tattoo dark skin just say that but don’t try to use the skin color as an excuse of why you cannot do color or why you cannot tattoo it just say you don’t know how to maneuver or use the Right color that will work don’t try to use the color of their skin as a fault of why the tattoo did not come out the way you wanted to that is bullshit

I have 1 tattoo that is over 30 years old that was done in some hole in the wall tattoo parlor somewhere outside of Augusta Georgia. So, I'm no tattoo expert by an extremely long shot. I say that to say this, those tattoos look freaking AWESOME!!! 😳 And watching this show makes me want to get at least one more.

I've learned to never judge an artist by their Ink Master performance. Got 20 people, competing, with Camera crews watching and recording you for hours, and that's rushed hours 90% of the time.

tbh I would've chosen the other owl over Katie's. I prefer the headshape a lot more and Katie's owl seems to be leaning foreward while Matt's is standing straight up. I also prefer the more realistic coloring on Matt's tattoo compared to Katie's. Both are very good owl tattoos, but that's just my opinion.

Good guy Dave. And he was right too. To add to that, the reasoning the judge gave was horrible as well. Just because they were treated like that themselves, doesn't mean they should treat other like that.

The wolf tattoo was pretty bad. You can find the yawning wolf photo he used as a reference and he totally jacked up a bunch of things like he drew the tan ear fur as pink inside of the ear and the dark mask of the wolf face was turned into a flower shape.
