I'm glad we finally have a standard. I thought it would be CCS, but NACS is sleeker for sure. It is funny that Aptera was first. Love to see it hit production.
@kaasmeester5903
@kaasmeester5903 11 месяцев назад
NACS is a nice connector but not really rated for the power they are putting through it already. CCS is rated up to just over 1 MW (!), and 350kW chargers are already very common here. The difference between CCS and NACS is that CCS specs the connector for the power, whereas NACS does not and just YOLOs it... but they measure temperatures and if the thing becomes too hot they dial back the power. It's a valid approach, and NACS is meant to eventually charge as 1 MW as well, but currently only really tested at 250kW (Tesla supercharger). Personally I think it doesn't really matter which standard gets adopted, and the fact that the US and Europe will have different standards is a non-issue... though auto designers will probably have some choice words to say about that...

@@kaasmeester5903 I mostly agree with you. Tesla has definitely been testing their V4 super, and it definitely goes higher than 250kw, and the thing that heats the wires is amps, not volts. Their V4 will go up to 1000V. The 250kw 400V is a lot more amps than 350kw at 800V.
@XTRLFX
@XTRLFX 11 месяцев назад
@@kaasmeester5903Europe will stay on CCS to allow for 3 phase AC that is common in many countries over here. going to 1 phase AC would limit home charging to 4.6kW (in some countries even just 3.7kW), while currently we can do 11kW (3x 230V 16A) without even asking the electricity company Even 32A is possible (22kW), but not many cars can handle that and honestly isn't really needed for most people. 11kW is plenty, 4.6kW would be ok, but 10A like most charging bricks support from a household socket is not enough. I could barely get enough power in the car for my daily need with that (had to do that before my level 2 charger was installed for a few weeks).

An investor guru once said, "Innovation is risk. It's hard to make the impossible possible." This is what Aptera is experiencing as they strive to bring the world's most efficient EV to market. The fact that this doesn't qualify for the tax credit is a huge issue. This vehicle costs $33,200 and you can get a new inventory model 3 for $31,500 after the federal tax credit (and much less with some state credits). And the model 3 comes with a higher quality interior, extra seats, autopilot, 4 wheels, great software, etc. The Aptera really needs economies of scale to bring the price down and make it more competitive

@nattydred2593
@nattydred2593 11 месяцев назад
@@u9Nails For a personal project like a home upgrade, that's fine. You can work on it forever. For a self owned business that's OK, as it's your time and money. For a business that takes investor money, that's a huge red flag. You have to have some sort of discipline to meet deadlines and work towards positive cash flow. Sure, make the first few iterations very expensive, but use them to refine the design. Even if you have to replace them later on, get something out the door. Tesla puts emphasis on getting the minimal functional product out there then improving it, as opposed to continually adding bells and whistles at the cost of delivering anything. A chronic inability to meet goals and produce anything is, ..., bad. The impression I'm getting from Aptera is that they're only goal is to drum up enthusiasm and excitement. Not to deliver a product and scale production on positive cash flow. I'm not saying they're drinking up investor cash as a scam. It could just be the the leadership cares more about, say, being recognized as brilliant designers, than about building a successful business.

@wtmayhew
@wtmayhew 11 месяцев назад
I disagree with removing every possible physical control. Requiring screen gestures which may be arbitrarily reprogrammable is even possibly unsafe, depending on what function a driver can’t figure out how to access. I get it, that a screen is a fairly expensive component, but it reduces manufacturing complexity. That’s win for the auto maker, but not necessarily for drivers. Reading some of the mainline auto press magazines and web sites, I’m seeing small but growing push-back against relegating critical and/or often used functions to screens. Sandy might not like outside mirrors, but they are rather simple and reliable. People with presbyopia vision have an easier time with a mirror because they don’t have to readjust their focus when glancing at the mirror, but they do have to refocus when the scene is imaged on a screen.
@LordTimelord
@LordTimelord 11 месяцев назад
At a bare minimum IMHO. Every vehicle's turn signals, wipers, horn, HVAC, and volume control for the stereo with a mute option should have a physical control on every vehicle made. If they want a duplicate the function on the screen that's fine. But those basic functions should be able to immediately be grabbed with a hand on a physical control.

Due respect to Mr. Munro, but I am part of the camp who prefers to have physical controls for driver safety. I am a reservation holder and investor, and while I do hope and expect that the yoke controls will do a lot of things without having to look around on the touchscreen, I really don’t agree with auto manufacturers trend to remove as many buttons as they can. The buttons that should be retained are radio power, radio, volume, AC on and off, temperature dial, and physical controls to initiate and stop cruise control. These are the minimum controls that I feel are necessary to be intuitive and useful without having to look down. All it takes is a second and a half looking away to end up in the back of somebody else’s car. I kind of feel like it’s irresponsible to insist that all buttons should disappear just because they might create a failure point. Automobiles have been manufactured for 100 years now, and most manufacturers are able to install a knob and a button without them having to fail. I will offer an alternative, though, which is I think that in a system like this, there could very easily be a way to add optional controls that can be removed if a customer doesn’t need them. There’s no reason why there can’t be either an interface to connect physical controls to, or, and I don’t find this to be as reliable, but a Bluetooth interface, and then you place the controls wherever you want them in the cabin. But please stop advocating to get rid of physical controls. It is significantly more dangerous. And while it is a nice idea to emulate smart phones, the fact of the matter is that those can be more annoying than helpful.

I'm rooting for Aptera, hopefully they're able to deliver something modern Americans will adapt to. I understand the reasoning why micro cars like the Smart Fortwo never really took off in the states, but the Aptera has loads more potential. I read an article, just a short one. Elon Musk was asked about the solar Aptera. He said that he’s heard of it and he doesn’t believe it’s gonna make it. Concept is nice but it is not something that sells or something like that. of course I don’t remember exactly what he said, I think that’s close enough. this tells me that Elon musk absolutely been watching the Aptera develop. The more he talks it down the more I’m convinced it’s gonna make it and it is a threat. It is my opinion that, just as the original original vehicles were carriages converted to an automobile, automobiles today are being converted into electric vehicles that need to be redesigned completely. at Tara is the first that has successfully to this point created a solar vehicle designed to be solar, not converted from a gas automobile.

Maybe Sandy has young eyes. Like a lot of people his age I have presbyopia and I don't want to be changing focus from infinity to reading distance repeatedly just to keep tabs on surrounding traffic. @wtmayhew
@wtmayhew 11 месяцев назад
@@BixbyConsequence I was thinking the same thing. The screen sucks for presbyopia having to readjust your focus. The older you get, the longer it takes. I also have a beef with gesturing, especially if it is programmable and a driver may not know what the hell the previous driver set up. I was impressed with my 2017 Bolt. I was able to hand my girlfriend, who’s kind of a technophobe, the key fob at the park. She got in and drove the Bolt and used HVAC, etc. mainly because important functions have real controls, not buried in a screen menu which requires some sort of abstract gesturing. My standard for design is: can you go to a rental desk at an airport, they hand you the key, you get in and drive. Period. No need to sit there reading the manual for 20 minutes to figure out how to get the damn thing out of Park and turn on the A/C.

It was a "fad" that quickly dissipated once the reality of lack of convenience hit people. Let alone the fact it's unsafe & distracts people when they should be concentrating on driving. If I have to start scrolling through a screen to find a smple window, temperature/fan, volume/channel switch etc you can count me out.

I agree. Millions of hours, mostly driven from aerospace hmi were spent to optimise the interaction by safety driven aspects. A car was a system possible to be used without getting ypur eyes off the street. Which was a serious satefy aspect. Now the bean counters enforce displays because they are much cheaper than mechanical devices like knobs, levers and buttons. Imagine: it is forbidden to use your cell phone while driving but nobody cares if you are manipulating anything from suspension over AC to sound system on a screen that you definitively have to look to to do it. In a Tesla driving 160mph a second is a long travel... we will see lots of accidents caused by this.

Sandy, please continue to be open and supportive of the wonderful concept of Aptera. Reading some of the comments makes me wonder why so many are disbelievers? I have followed Aptera for a few years now, and thought the Elio made some sense, it was a definite scam. Aptera is getting comments that it should not, and that bothers me. Yeah, it is different, but it has an ethos that is needed in today's world. Making an efficient safe fun to drive vehicle is what they are doing, so why the hate? Yeah, it's different, sadly so was the Edsel. An extremely safety conscious car for its day. If you liked the way it looked you were unusual, bathtub grill, was a turn off for most. Rejected in the market, but I doubt Aptera will be rejected in the marketplace, because it hit so many highs. Please help them find a whale, or get the ATVM loan, so they can begin assembly. Due to the thought process of the line, and the simplicity of so few parts, and many sub-assemblies coming together, I think production hell is going to be avoided. How will it do on track, with racing slicks and extra wings :-D The present core shape might actually lend itself for active aero panels to pop out momentarily for braking and cornering. Low drag on straights (think Mulsanne, Baku, Las Vegas F1) and only a few seconds of high downforce (and unavoidable drag) in situation when you're more likely regenning or coasting anyway. Near same slickness when active aero is retracted. Imagine a track version taking on Formula E. More downforce when needed, a fraction of the drag, and way more battery capacity so it can double or triple power output over a race of given duration.
