This is a tour of my two backyard aquaponics systems, built in 2012 and 2013. Aquaponics (raising fish and vegetables together) can be an efficient approach to organic food production. I hope this tour provides insight into how anyone can build pretty simple, low-cost aquaponics systems for themselves.

I have seen a hundreds of aquaponics videos. Truly speaking this one ranks no. 1. The plants are at optimum health. Thanks for the beautiful video.

Thanks for sharing all the information. Everyone sharing theory which is useless without practical demonstration and those with farm just show farms does not reveal all the information like you did. Everything looks properly thought out with prior good knowledge.

Just to mention i would say that flood & drain has an advantage over continuous flow of water because when the bed is empty, the roots are exposed to air (oxygen). It is a mixture of flow of nutrient and oxygen using flood & drain. With insufficient air and continuous flow of water causing roots to remain submerged in water, you may end up with brown roots rather than healthy white ones ! Great work though cheers.

Thanks, Ainesh. I understand your reasoning, but we've designed, built, and operated both types of systems, and from our experience, so long as adequate flow rates and dissolved oxygen levels are maintained throughout the system, the continuous flow systems perform just as well as flood and drain, and just as well as raft method for that matter. 4-6 ppm of dissolve oxygen is all that is necessary for optimal plant growth, more is not needed and has no discernible additional benefit, and by maintaining high enough flow rates through the media beds (e.g. a full exchange every 5-10 minutes), the distribution of nutrients and oxygen is more than adequate. And since the same plant growth performance can be achieved with either kind of system (if designed properly), it makes sense to us to go with the approach that is simpler, cheaper, and more reliable.

Aeroponics is better than both. You just have to filter your water before spraying.

Nice tour, but I have a questioin, the title is 10 acres, but from the video, it didn't look like it is a 10 acres operation.
@1982MCI
@1982MCI 5 лет назад
I had the same question. I got excited when I saw the title cause I've got a 21 acre farm that I've converted over to growing produce and I have been considering converting half or 1/4 over to aquaponics so I thought WOW! Someone else is doing aquaponics on 10 acres so it can be done but then I find out they meant .10 acres. I will give credit to him tho, hes got a nice little system but where in the hell is the 10 acres at?
@lloydminick8823
@lloydminick8823 5 лет назад
Thanks for your interest and for the questions. The company we founded, Ten Acre Organics, intended to develop a 10-acre aquaponics farm. These systems in my backyard were our first prototypes. We eventually raised some capital and built a 10,000 sq.ft. commercial system, which still runs today, but Ten Acre Organics was wound down and dissolved in 2015. My apologies for the confusion - I have decided to change the video title.

Damn Loyd, this was really interesting. I watched all the way through easily. You really used good camera angles and the audio is awesome. Do you have any thoughts on grow tower aquaponics brother? Plus I'm in a really cold part of the world (N.Ireland) we get some sun maybe April to September, but it's freezing at all other times sometimes literally. Is there a reliable method for heating say, a polytunnel in the Winter affordably. I mean do you guys shutdown for Winter or employ some knowhow (earth battery etc) to extend the growing season? I know the bacteria require certain temperatures to stay alive and active. Many thanks guys and thank you for posting.

Here in texas we have a super short cold period usually a month or 2 most commonly but i'm currently trying to grow indoors due to the cold! i'm trying to set up an automated system with an arduino to regulate the temp while i'm away at work for 10 hours a day. I can't just turn a space heater on and leave because you never know what the temp will change to here in texas. also im trying to explore the upright gardens as well. i found a great netpot on thingiverse for vertical gardening. its angled to improve dripping downward! Im going to print a few and try on a small scale with around 4-6 plants. Good luck!

Vegetables getting soft meaning it lacks of moisture if you keep the root on the plant and trim it when you were ready to eat, the vegetables would last much longer. How large is your aquaponics system?
