Several years ago I remodelled the bathroom which included new bath, wc, sink and tiling. Since I didn't want any risk of water splashing, potential leaks or other getting past the tiles and into the dry lining (drywall), I decided to apply a waterproof tanking solution to the walls before they were tiled.
I used Aquaseal's waterproof tanking membrane which is a paintable coating that dries to a tough, flexible film once dry. The tiles are then applied to this surface. Purely out of scientific curiosity, I wanted to see just how tough this film is.
I coated a ceramic gloss tile with two coats - one painted horizontally, then another vertically (according to Aquaseal's instructions). Once dry, I peeled off the coating (which really stuck well to the gloss surface) and used this piece as the impromptu and probably unscientific test sample.
Needless to say it was tough.
