Even though we only know like 1% of life that has ever existed on Earth, it still amazes me that any can be preserved when I look at those insane mini-maps. The continents were all over the place, and somehow all those fossils were dragged halfway around the world and survived, only to be found by humans in identifiable condition.

They did once but a reexamination of the fossils of the formerly Shonisaurus sikkanniensis in 2011 has revealed that this animal was in fact closer to the family of Shastasauridae rather than to species of the family Shonisauridae. Therefore, it was changed from Shonisaurus sikkanniensis to Shastasaurus sikkanniensis. It's still up for debate though, what with another study in 2013 reaffirming in one researcher's mind that the Sikkanniensis species was indeed a part of the Shonisauridae family but this hasn't truly yet been made official and Shastasaurus sikkanniensis remains the official size record holder.

You're thinking of the species Shastasaurus sikkaniensis, which has relatively recently been pronounced to not be valid anymore, because it was determined to be part of the Shonisaurus genus after all. It is, thus, now called Shonisaurus sikkaniensis.

@madsgrams2069
@madsgrams2069 Год назад
@@TheMiels Speciation is weird like that. And without DNA, just through morphological analysis, the classifications we come with are somewhat subjective and predisposed to change with what opinions may be prevalent at what time. The giant monitor lizard of Pleistocene Australia was categorized within its own genus when first discovered. Then, someone else analyzed it and said it's similar enough to today's Komodo dragon, that it should be put in the same genus, Varanus. Thus, it became Varanus priscus and the newly created genus for it, Megalania, stopped being a valid one. It's kind of how paleontology works.

Hey Mario, I like your rendition of Mystriosuchus! I don't think it's appropriate to reconstruct phytosaurs overly croc-like, which is what most people do. There is some convergent evolution, but the two groups aqcuired their appearances independently and have different evolutionary backgrounds. Phytosauria is probably just outside of Archosauria. Many depictions of phytosaurs seem a bit misleading and distracting to me in that regard. Also, Mystriosuchus is believed to be more aquatic than some of its relatives, so I think it would prefer speed and agility provided by smoother skin over croc-like scutes. So yeah, I like what you did there! By the way, remains of Mystriosuchus (M. steinbergeri in particular) were found in Austria, extending the known geographic range of the genus. I am also interested in the small dorsal fin you gave Tylosaurus. I've seen some other mosasaurs depicted with them, but I never heard of actual evidence. So I assume it's on the speculative side. Is there any reasoning behind the specific shape, size and position of this structure in your Tylosaurus art? Of course the appearances of those dorsal fins would probably depend on the ecology of the individual mosasaur species. In this case, it seems to me as if you referenced the fins of baleen whales for Tylosaurus. This makes sense, as the largest mosasaurs were approaching some extant cetaceans in terms of dimensions an size. But Tylosaurus in particular being a big, pelagic macropredator, makes me wonder if the fin of this animal (in case it possesed one) would have had more resemblance to the ones seen in modern sharks and toothed whales (and therefore be a bit taller and "edgier" than portrayed in the video). I'm just curious. Also, I have a question regarding this weird bony protrusion/knob at the tip of the snout. Is it possible that this anatomical feature served as a display structure, or is there a different more likely purpose? Overall, great art as always! Keep up the quality content!
@MarioLanzas.
@MarioLanzas. 3 года назад
Thanks! The small dorsal fin is totally speculative. There's no direct evidence of mosasaurs to have any, but since it's a feature that evolves many times in very different large marine animals, it's not an outlandish possibility. As for the knob in the snout, I have no idea what fuction it could serve... maybe for display, movement sensoring or to hit their prey as swordfish do... Who knows🙃

Amazing video! I have one critiuqe tho: tylosaurus was the largest type of mosasurus. The largest mosasurus specimen on display is Bruce. He was 14 meters long and was a tylosaurus.

P.S. Shonisaurus was actually the biggest animal for around 60 million years. The Shonisaurus was the biggest animal in the Triassic, Then the Jurassic period, where the titanosaurs like Giraffatitan and Barosaurus were the biggest animals around in the jurassic, including Diplodocus. In the Cretaceous period, the Argentinosaurus was the biggest living object to exist. If you think this is a cool fact then like this comment! Especially @Jpteryx
