When Bolton did his cover of this older Percy Sledge hit, he had an orchestra behind him. When Austin took the lead in this version, he had 3 singers and a beatboxer to back him up. No contest -- Austin and Home Free take it! Done during the pandemic quarantine, they weren't together, so the producer gets a huge shout out as well. So glad you're back to Home Free -- my favorite of all the great vocal groups.

This version from Home Free feels so much more personal and intimate, because Austin is in the studio with Amberly, his now wife, and the guys were at their homes due to the pandemic. So, how Austin is able to make us feel connected while he is actually singing straight to Amberly, is his own special ingredient. Plus, we Home Fries truly feel connected to these guys through all of their music and the way they let us peek at their lives, so we are thrilled for Austin and Amberly. Yes, the musicianship is glorious, but there is more to this performance that "includes" us.

YES, he out-Boltened Bolton! 👍😳🤯😁 Bolton always sounded like it pained him to sing that song. With Austin, it just FLOWS out of him naturally! Austin owns this song now. ❤

He definitely out-Boltoned Bolton. Love Austin’s voice. Makes this 70 year old lady’s knees go weak! (Could be the arthritis!🤣) I went back once and watched Percy Sledge’s version (the original artist) and for me, Austin blows him out of the water.

Austin sings this joyfully. Michael sounds pained and like he's about to blow a gasket. Austin makes it look easy. Michael looks like his shorts are pinching him.

I really enjoyed watching you fall in love with this version. I have no idea if Darren works with VP or not, but he IS a genius. This is a man who is ecstatic about being in love, Bolton just sounded frustrated, and Percy was in despair at how love treated a man. Even without the visual of the joy on his face, you can tell this is a celebration. And his voice caresses this a lot better than Bolton's ever did.

Austin did a fabulous job of this classic song. Loved Percy Sledge's version, but this was taken to another level. I think it is also better than Michael Bolton's version. And remember this was done during quarantine, so the guys weren't even together. The backing harmonies are great, along with Tim's bass. And Adam's vocal percussion is outstanding. Drummers have often commented on just how realistic his sound is. This is why these guys are my favorite a cappella group.

Never cared for the Sledge nor the Bolton version. Bolton's version made me fear for his vical chords. But the boys killed it. Great backing vocals, perfect percussion and Austin effortlessly flying off. Definitely better than Bolton.

I'm happy to see the late Percy Sledge's 1966 classic brought back to life for new generations. The writer of the song had been through a bad break-up and wrote "I gave you everything I had". Austin Brown's lady (now wife) was in the studio and he sings "I'll give you everything I've got". A subtle but significant change. BTW, he's also one of the 3 song writers in Home Free and has originals with them & on his own channel.

Home Free's Version, (Austin Brown - Lead) brings such joy to my heart - much like the previous versions did in their time. Yes, I am an Old Donkey! It is truly unfair to make comparisons, as the technology will allow only what it can. Good sound engineers, however, are a different breed, altogether - they are few and far between. Lastly, Austin has the incomparable ability to emote such a song, with extremely powerful and identifiable qualities. It is also good to be reminded that each following rendition will have the luxury to 'tweak' a musical piece, which the original artist can never do... Home Free is so very good at what they do, that at times, we totally forget that this is in the form of A Capella. Still, Austin takes the cake. (Do give a listen to Austin Brown's solo version of 'Bring Him Home' - from Les Miserables, That last note is truly Un-Godly! Even a 'Castrato' can not compare !!!!) PS: I just can't, however, get past the Bolton Mullett!!!

Yes he did. He made me pay attention to every word AND I could actually understand what he was singing AND his emoting was spot on. All of them made this such an amazing experience after hating this song for so many years. Bolton was forced on me for months on end after the movie came out and I just couldn't connect to his version. This though, is magic. Love your reaction. 😊

For me the original Percy Sledge version is the best. Michael Bolton and Home Free both did fantastic covers but stayed true to the original which is a compliment in itself! :)

You have to do so... so many more Home Free songs. Tim taught Geoff how to go that low, they're good friends! It's not cheating to love all the groups (but Home Free is my favorite). Some Home Free suggestions: Funny ones - "All About That Bass", "The Butts Medley/Remis", "Country Fried Pop", and of course, "Never Gonna Give You Up" Tim Foust's solo, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay" And of course, Adam Rupp's drum solo... there's several versions of his live performances out there.

Percy Sledge did the original back in the 60's

much better than Bolton's cover (at least to me), and even out SOUL's the original Percy Sledge version which was an R & B smash in 1966. Austin is a musical genius

I believe Austin was singing this to his Woman at the time. That is why he sang it so well. I love this version so very much. The tiny little changes and additions just make it something so very special.

When Percy Sledge released this song in 1966, I was a senior in high school. It has remained one of my favorites since then. I've never heard anyone else do a cover version until Home Free. Now I don't care to hear anyone else attempt it.

Try the Percy Sledge original version when you get a chance. Now that is a pure classic 1966 it was and I was in my 20's and that song was so good and real it's been one of my favorites for all those intervening decades. Home Free, as usual, did not disappoint, and as usual the song has been upgraded with their vocal instrumentation just making the song rise to another level. And Austin, what can I say about Austin? That kid can Sing! He put some of the ladies hormones to work with that "Side-Eye" he was giving them. More than one female reviewer stated that he was singing to them. That was kind of true, it was during COVID and a shortage of help and his new girlfriend at the time Amberly, now his wive, was in the studio running the camera and that was who Austin was singing to, he was giving her that loving eye. Basically singing the song to and for her, he was in love and it showed when he was singing directly in the camera.

Great reaction! Not sure if mentioned by other comments but Austin's lady, Amberly, was in the studio as 'inspiration'. FYI...he's leaving HF this fall, after they finish their current tour, here in the US. He had lived his life on the road for many years until lockdown when he finally got a taste of what it was like to be home. He and A were married last year and want to start a family. HF is on the hunt for a replacement although Austin is one-of-a-kind so time will tell who the new face and voice will be. Saw MichaelB in concert decades ago. Really enjoyed the show and his performance of this song, which I already knew from the Percy Sledge version.

If you prefer smooth and effortless-sounding vocals that still manage to convey emotion, Austin wins, easily. If your preference is a voice that sounds strained with emotion and seems to take every ounce of effort to get the lyrics out, then Bolton is your man.

Don't you think it might be a good idea not to talk over the song? And singing along is really disrespectful. Personally I can't stand Bolton's version.
