Hello, Mark! I' m Greek and my husband is Lebanese. His very first word in Greek was Hara (which means "joy" ) and we use it to greet people as in the expression: Yià ke harà= Health and joy (to you). Imagine how he, a gentle and well-mannered youth, must have felt to receive greetings with shit on top! Apart from that, you're doing a great job! Aafek!

@hyacinthe7
@hyacinthe7 2 года назад
@@XarmutinhaTrue, it's (slightly) softer than a normal N, but should be heard in any case. One thing I've noticed living in Greece is that those who don't pronounce it are southerners (especially those in Athens). They will say péde instead of pénde (πέντε) and ágelos instead of ángelos (άγγελος). It sounds ridiculous (and arrogant) if you ask me.

@@hyacinthe7 me, a shocked athenian: 🤭😮🤐😱. True, yet in the spoken language nasal sounds are always modified, sometimes skipped others added (τον κήπο-το γκηπο, τον παπαγάλο-το μπαπαγαλο) sooooo.
@hyacinthe7
@hyacinthe7 2 года назад
@@Xarmutinha Haha, you're from Athens? I hate the Athenian accent, sorry. One thing I've noticed living here (was born/raised overseas) is that so many people (journalists and young kids in particular) don't even know how to speak and write Greek properly. So many mistakes with words and, as we've already discussed, pronunciation. I'll give you one more example, this time from my time in the army. How many times did I hear "Κύριε Διοικητά!" = δikitá. It's actually δiikitá, two i sounds just like in πΟΙΗτής.

In Arabic we have fikr, and faqr. Fikr means thinking/thoughts, faqr means poverty. فِكْر فَقْر So if someone has an empty mind or doesn't generate thoughts, we can describe them as: فَقِير الفِكْر
