Albanian is a unique languages that occupies an independent branch within the Indo-European family. It is an official language in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia, and has minority status in Italy, Romania, Montenegro, and Serbia. The Albanian language has a wide range of varieties, with two major groups of Gheg and Tosk. Within the Tosk group, Arbëresh is one of the five sub-dialects, with the other ones being Northern Tosk, Labërisht, Çam, and Arvanitika. Arbëresh (arbërisht) derives from a medieval variety of Tosk and retains many features of medieval Albanian. It is spoken by the Arbëreshë people in Italy.
In this video we'll take a look at how well a Sicilian and an Albanian speaker can work together as a team to understand Arbëresh.
Salvatore (Sicilian speaker) and Hazis (Albanian speaker) will listen to several sentences that Martin has put together in Arbëresh containing words that originate from both Albanian and Sicilian origin and try to guess the full meaning.
Tosk (toskë or toskërisht) is the basis of the standard Albanian language, with the major Tosk-speaking groups being the Myzeqars of Myzeqe, Labs of Labëria, Chams of Çamëria, Arvanites of Greece and the Arbëreshë of Italy. The Gheg variety (gegnisht) is spoken in northern and central Albania, Kosovo, northwestern North Macedonia, southeastern Montenegro and southern Serbia.

I'm a Brazilian Portuguese speaker and I understood almost half of the first sentence in Arbëresh. I couldn't completely get it but some words felt familiar enough to get an idea of what he was talking about. Sicilian was easier but it's definitely different from Italian and I wasn't expecting that since I had never heard of it until I clicked the video. Albanian is just hard lol but it probably has some words borrowed from Latin I guess so I can understand ~some words~ but not an entire sentence. Pretty cool video

As a comparative historical linguistic in training and enthusiast, I feel it’s imperative and very interesting to clearly display these differences visually so we can understand and appreciate these languages. What a great way to explain where we are with our language! It is fun, clear, and didactic. I hope this paves the way toward the rehabilitation of Arbëresh. There is nothing wrong with mixing up languages when different peoples with different cultures, traditions, and languages meet and live together for centuries. There is no other possible result. We must take care of this language, take care of it and be extremely proud. Thanks, Martín Di Maggio for your great job!

Arbëria sas a principality ruled by the native Progoni family, and the first Albanian state to emerge in recorded history. The principality was established in 1190 by the native archon Progon in the region surrounding Kruja, to the east and northeast of Venetian territories. Progon was succeeded by his sons Gjin and then Demetrius (Dhimitër), who managed to retain a considerable degree of autonomy from the Byzantine Empire.

There's some good news. There's at least one word as far as I know, which is very similar to Spanish. It comes from the Albanian Gheg/Northern dialect, which has been said to be the oldest dialect. The word: Chica in Spanish means Girl, In Albanian Gheg/Northern Dialect one of the words they use for Girl/Daughter is Çikë/Çika and it's pronounced similar. So, now you can say that you know at least one Albanian word, which is in Spanish as well. 😁

In south Italy, there are two big family of dialects : dialects born by sicilian and dialects born by napolitan. The first are speaking in Sicily , south Calabria and south Puglia; and the second are speaking in the other part of south Italy. Normally also in the part that are speaking the napolitan dialects can understand sicilian, but not all the words. In other part of Italy can understand some words of sicilian but less than in south Italy.

I met an Albanian women and her daughter who was referring to herself as "Nonna" when talking with her grandchildren. I assumed that she was Italian, but she told me she was from Kosovo and spoke Albanian, but I'm confused because "Grandmother" in Albanian does not translate to "Nonna".
@megangjoka9998
@megangjoka9998 Год назад
In the Gheg dialect (which is the dialect used in Kosovo as well) they refer to the grandmother as “nona” or in some other nothern regions “nana”. In the Tosk dialect (that is spoken in southern Albania) they refer to the grandmother as “nëna”. These are also terms that could be used to refer to your mother especially in north Albania. However in southern Albania, we mostly refer to our mothers as “mami”.

Albanian is the mother of all languages, especially Gheg dialect. It can decipher the symbols - God's language and other languages. When you compare Sanskrit and Albanian, they are very similar, but Albanian is more powerful and lives today. Latin and old Greek languages can be easy deciphered from Albanian language too. These languages are dead today. Ask why? Sicilian is romance dialect- language, while arbresh isn't. And it doesnt matter if they use some latin words because words or the names of some objects are not the language! Example. Maltese language has about 50% of italian sicilian words but that doesnt make it a romance language. Maltese language is only semituc language in Europe, and its mutualy inteligiable with arab language.
