My dad owned arcades in the Portland Oregon area in the late 70s & early 80s. I remember this game coming out when I was around 12 or 13. Was ADDICTED to it!
Memories of My dad saying ‘begin’ as I played this in the arcades comes flooding back Nearly 40 years ago now. Before life got in between us and now he’s gone I want to blink my eyes and be the there again .
What I remember about this game is the awesome number of moves you could get out of two joysticks. That's how it was controlled: each player had two joysticks, and moving them in the right combinations could make you kick, duck, back-flip, front-flip, just all kinds of stuff.
it was fantastic! You are so right, the number of moves from two joysticks combined. It was like every major martial arts move was in this game. "Lunge punch!" and the game would respond "Full Point!" or "Half point!"
God I loved playing this in the arcade when I was a lil boy. My main 3 fighting games were this....kung fu and the original street fighter. Love love love all 3 games. I used to play kung fu on the computer w/ my big cousin though. I gotta get all of these old games somehow.
This game is still the shit. I wish they made more martial arts game like this: legit, realistic gameplay where every punch and kick matters. The dual arcade-stick controls were awesome too.
truboricua It is coming to ps4 arcade archives soon. Ps4 already has double dragon, renegade came out yesterday. Rygar and others. I am so happy with Sony. They are killing it.
I am shocked nobody has tried to remake this with modern graphics and just twin stick contols. They could make it really deep with analogue sticks and 16 axis control on each stick.
I remember there was a certain pattern that you could use and it would work every time except the last few guys. forward flip, back wards flip, forward flip, jump kick or punch.
At the time the fact that you had intermissions and different stages (the championships even with a "moving" crowd) was an attention to details that most games didn't have!
ever since i saw this in the Bloodsport movie back in 2006 i been searching for it in the arcades and finally found it last year at a nickle arcade, i have the rom in my portable game emulator but i wanted to try the arcade and it was epic
I used to play this game often during the first year it was out. The "smack" sound was killer (for the era). We used to taunt each other with that..."How about that smack down, Joe!?" and so on.
God I was good at this game....take .50 cent to the arcade and spend hours in there playin this.....wish I had all the quarters back I spent learning it though! lol
this was one of the games closest to the entrance at the arcade here when I was a kid. I played it a lot but I don't think I ever got past the second guy. I remember beating the first guy and getting to dodge stuff but these guys were so tricky.
The 'VS' version came out the following year. It had improved AI and a sub-plot featuring fighting over a girls affections! It was a better game though - the fighters responded better and the AI was markedly improved. Check out Karate Champ Arcade Game on HubPages for a full rundown of it! :-)
All you had to do in this game was just take a couple steps forward and crouch. When the opponent got close enough you just press upwards on the other stick and it with punch him in the balls. Most of the time it was a half point but sometimes would give you the full point. This worked on every stage.

The version in this vid is called 'Karate Champ' - then about 1 year later another version was released Called 'Karate Champ VS'. Both games are similar but the later version had better AI and a sub-plot about fighting to win the heart of a girl.
