another great video. I'd love to see how to replace an original older power supply (i.e. Galaga, Asteroids) to a switching power supply

There are 1000 page books on power supply units (psu). This video did the one smartest thing about psu issues - it suggested you get help when things get murky. Good on you guys. One suggestion, if the wiring color does not conform to the atx standard, send it back. Who knows what else they bodged up.

yeah i suspected that some machines would work with atx style power supplies... I dont have much experience in the arcade field. great vids guys... They are great for some general info on such a particular topic.

Thanks for this video. I just bought my first arcade cabinet (Bad Dudes) and when I powered on I would get a black screen. I had to leave the cabinet powered on for 5 minutes then shut it off and on a few times to get it to display. It’s like it needed to warm up. I tested the DC terminals on the switching power supply and had no voltage during the “warm up”. When the game was operating normally, it would show 5V and 12V on the DC terminals. I’m going to replace the power supply. Thanks again.

@BLACKCARGORECORDS We have a video on Replacing A Plug On A Power Cord that you might check out. The process is somewhat similar except you're going to wire up the cord inside the cabinet instead of at the plug. Hopefully we can shoot a video on this particular topic soon. We have also featured your question on episode 17 of our Q&A podcast. Please listen to it for more of our thoughts on your question. Thanks.

Where can I purchase a new power supply and how much do they typically cost? Are they for the most part all universal for all of the machines? Great and informative video.

Love your series. I just bought a new atx power supply, just like the one in this video, for my Neo Geo 25" and I think I should check the voltage before hooking her up. I am very new to the tech side of arcade cabs and this video is great. My question is do I need to have the PSU plugged in and powered up to test the voltage with the multimeter or do I do the test like you have demonstrated with just the meter and the PSU not plugged in and powered up? I'm new so forgive the noob question.

@Gamester81Arcade You can purchase power supplies from Arcade Shop or The Real Bob Roberts. Unfortunately not all power supplies are universal for arcade machines. If you machine was put together in the nineties or later then you probably have a switching power supply like the one we show in the video. Otherwise you will need to get a specific power supply for the game you're working on. Check out our video on Checking A Classic Power Supply for more information.

So, does this mean games like Atari Pole Position that came out in the early 1980s use their own specific power supply and a switching power supply would not be feasible in these early machines like PP, Tempest, Asteroids, Galaxian, Galaga, Pacman, Donkey Kong, Tron etc

I have a Lethal Enforcers machine that I recently picked up and see that the power supply has been in water and is ruined so I am going to swap it out. My question is can I just buy a new switching power supply like the black one in the video or do I have to use the old pc looking supply like the silver one in the video? Will it hurt it to swap?

I have an arcade power supply with normal +5V and +12V (it is only 11,4V), but there is -4V instead of -5V. What do you think I can do? Can I modify this -4V somehow or warranty return? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Should I disconnect the DC output completely before plugging in and testing? It will boot if I do not.
@arcaderepairtips
@arcaderepairtips 4 года назад
Justin, we usually test the DC output as it is when we first obtain the cabinet. If the DC output is hooked up, we also recommend checking the voltage at the board level to make sure it is getting good power there as well. We will also be discussing your on our Live Show Episode 42 coming up on Thursday, August 6, 2020. Here's a link to the episode if you want to hear more of our thoughts on your question: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IlCOqzjeDDY.html

you tell to set up the power supply to the most accurate we can to 5v and 12v but (at least with the 5V) shouldn't you leave it a little bit higher like 5,1 or 5,2 since when you connect the board it will make it go down a little bit...at least I use to do the measures and adjustments with the board connected (ensuring at least it is not overpowered) to make such adjustments.

Have you checked your power supply to see if it's putting out the correct voltage? That's definitely the first place to start. You can email pics to questions@arcaderepairtips.com if you need additional help.

It would help if you can show us what your are doing. I can’t see anything from where you are recording from. A close up would help.
