One of the best Arcade documentaries of all time. Took me a lot of lunch breaks to finally finish this video, but it was worth every bit. Obviously you know I'm a fan of your videos, but once again thank you. I can see how much research and work has gone into this video (as well as previous ones) and it's just a joy to watch, it is never not appreciated and I'm sure others feel the same way. You have a huge fan here in the UK and I will continue to watch every video! Simply put: That was awesome!!! When I saw this come up in my feed and noted it was more than 4 hours, I figured it was a recording of a stream, so I thought -- "I'll take a peak" with no real intent of watching it from start to finish. Once I started I could not stop - excellent content and editing. I played the majority of these games back in the 80's, but the best part of this for me were games that I couldnt remember the names to, or games that I had forgotten until I saw some sort of familiar screen that jogged my memory. Wow that was easily one of the best arcade features I’ve ever seen. My first recollection of Arcade coin ops were the old table top pong games (yes I’m pretty old!). After that my next big memories were from the bi-weekly trips to the laundromat with my mom and playing pac-man and galaxian. They would swap out games frequently over the years so I moved on to Galaga, xevious, etc pretty much in the order you feature them. I also vividly remember the first time I played the Temple of Doom game, Dragons Lair, well, again just like the large majority of games you covered. What a wonderful nostalgia trip! Can’t wait for part 3. I replied in another comment thread but I would totally also buy the complete series on blu-ray. Keep up the fantastic work!

Arcade games were a big part of travelling fairgrounds in the UK along with fruit machines, roulette and coin drop machines... was the first time I ever saw Astro Blaster and Pole Position... I remember at one fairground thinking I was doing well to get 50,000 points on Battlezone only to come back a few hours later and see high scores into the 500,000s or more...

Oh man this is freaking amazing! I grew up gaming in the arcades and I loved it. I started gaming back in 1986 with the Nes and Master System but the arcades were what really drew me in. It was the Sega Genesis and its ability to run incredible versions of arcade games in 1989 that turned me into a hardcore gamer. Thank you for making this my friend. Digital Foundry! What, what! ;) Whoa, whoa, whoa Data East was the first to come up with swapping ROM's out of a cab all the way back in the 1980's?! I thought that idea was all SNK in 1990 with the MVS. Man, not 10 minutes in and I have already learned something neat. You did it again, I didn't know the Famicom (Nes) was designed after the Donkey Kong cab...keep em' coming. ;)

@@BastichB64K Oh absolutely my friend. I loved every minute of it. One thing...we had Time Gal in one of our huge arcades growing up in Florida (Malibu Grand Prix). It was one of those places with mini golf and two huge go-kart tracks. Their arcade was between two buildings one of which was 3 stories tall all dedicated to arcade games! ;)

@@BastichB64K I thought so as that was the only place I ever played Time Gal. There was another Lazer Disc game that I remember playing that you didn't mention here. I wish I could remember the name but you could choose your starting point and you played an anime guy with a handgun. It was absolutely stunning and I just wish I could remember the games name. I played it...I want to say in 1988 maybe 1989 on my birthday. I kept dying at a bridge and my last play was in some kind of alley. A bunch of soldiers caught me and shot me repeatedly until I was dead. I know this sounds vague but does that sound like anything you have ever played?

Great stuff! I had to watch this over a few sessions - so much content in here! I seldom got to go down to "the seaside" when I lived in the UK but I used to love Afterburner. I really sucked at it and my money would be gone before I'd even started. My favourite arcades before that were definitely Battlezone and Star Wars. The day I climbed into that X-Wing cockpit and heard "Use the Force, Luke" I was in another galaxy.. and that was a long time ago :-) But yeah, when Afterburner came out for the C64 I saved my pocket money and bought the huge box C64 version. I played it an entire Saturday night while my parents were out at the pub even though I was very disappointed with it. Fast forward a few years and it was great to play it on Mame. Unfortunately nothing will replace that moving cabinet and the way the music seemed to kick in and get louder once I'd inserted my coins for 30 seconds of the shortest gameplay ever. Thankfully Star Wars ended up being one of the cheapest arcade games while Afterburner was around so at least I got some quality gameplay out of that. Even to this day, I have a soft spot for wireframe vector graphics games. Being around at the time of their creation is something I will always cherish - the feeling of being totally immersed in another world such Targ (Mercenary) or worlds (Elite).

Cool story , my friend bought afterburner on the c64 as well ... It was disappointing but we played it regardless 😂👍👍 And yeah i think you had to have played some of the Vector games back in the day to still appreciate them now , i think they still look fantastic

Yeah classic era. I must admit that by 1983/84 I'd kinda crossed over to C64 and ZX games and didn't pay much attention to arcades afterwards.... except for Commando, MACH3, Firefox, Gauntlet and Space Harrier which you couldn't really fail to notice... oh and Marble Madness which was incredible for the time.

Amazing video Brendan. You really managed to capture the feel of what an exciting time it was and the innovation that was taking place. The amount of effort you have put in to this is incredible. Unfortunately it doesn’t feature my favourite arcade series, the Mr Do games :(. I look forward to the next episode even though I found the 90’s arcade experience quite bland compared to the 80’s with all the beat ‘em ups and vertical scrolling shoot em ups. Again a massive achievement and the 4 hours simply flew by.
