Archaeologists Explore An Ancient Tomb Beside The Hellfire Club

The Hellfire Club is an eerie place.
The derelict stone building from the 1700s sits on an isolated hilltop overlooking Dublin city, and down through the years has been linked with everything from wild debauchery, a haunting by a massive black cat, to an appearance from Satan himself.
The building is said to have been cursed from the very beginning - an ancient passage grave once stood at the site, but was torn down and the stone used to build the club.
Now a team of archaeologists led by Neil Jackman are attempting to uncover the site's secrets - we paid them a visit earlier this week: jrnl.ie/3053842

This is surreal! I was on holiday in Dublin with my uni choir back in 2017, and one morning when I was up early and a bit hungover I thought I'd go for a bit of a hike to clear my head. I bought a map, jumped on a bus to the closest part of the Wicklow mountains national park and just started walking. This was the first place I came across, and I had no idea what it was about, I just saw the name on the map and thought "how odd", never thought to look it up online. I only saw two people on the entire walk, a farmer who made sure I wasn't lost, and a man who had been walking there every day for years. I took so long enjoying the beauty of it all that I was going to be late for a concert in the evening, so I had to hitch a lift back with a lady who was on the way to pick up her kids from school. Everything about that trip was fantastic, and this reminds me how much I want to go back.

It's mad, born and raised in Dublin, lived there for 45 years and have a permanent image of the Dublin mountains etched into my mind with the grey silhouette of the hellfire club, and I've never been upto visit it.

Never...?!? I grew up in Firhouse at the foothills of these mountains. We could see the Hellfire Club from our estate and we used to hike up to it regularly in our teens during the 90's. Such a magical place!

My understanding is that there is a neolithic passage grave directly underneath the building which William Connolly destroyed in order to build his lodge: it's believed one of the main stones was then built into the fireplace of the lodge (which is still there in the building).

Unfortunately for Irish archaeology, the decline of religion had reached a stage by the 18th century when superstitious dread no longer prevented the desecration of graves, but there was still enough belief in magic for it to be considered a good idea. Also the power balance in colonial Ireland was such that an Anglo-Irish landlord had no need to worry about angry locals with pitchforks. As far as "rituals" go, modern men don't need to put on gowns and surplices before abusing children.

Faithless Hound there not really superstitions they are beliefs from classical Irish paganism, these rituals are nothing to be joked they are real and have an effect on people and so is magic, and to say people involved in the occult are all paedophiles is a bit much
