It's always the smallest things that make a huge difference. I just finished two hours of practice Mediterranean draw, trying to find a problem that was making me shoot too far to the left. Eventually I realized - I was placing one foot slightly to the side. So, now I come back to this video once more before I practice thumb release again tomorrow. I have been reminded to pay attention to the details!

I'm certain you're aware by now that your explanations/recommendations have helped thousands of thumb- release enthusiasts perfect their shooting. I've been having random problems with arrow deflection lately, and this video had just the info I needed to correct the issue. I've been feeling that my shots are more consistent and accurate when I do things like what you described, and your instruction validated my impressions. Thanks! ;-)

Thank you for the videos on beginner thumb release and the propper technique. I did realize I, was bending my wrist. So now I'm going to practice, with a arrow in my release hand. 👍🏹🐺

Thank you for these videos about thumb release! Not too long ago I started practicing it with my new bow, and your insight has helped my arrows find their target much more often. Cheers my good man, and keep up the excellent work!

One thing I think you didn't mention, but I found very important, at least for me, is to keep the bow hand straight. No bend in it. This helped my technique a lot.

Great video about how khatra helps stop the bend in the path. And great thumbnail! helped me find the concept/issue I was looking for.

Dear Mr. Hirmer: I have commented before how helpful you have been to me, but wanted to state again in regard to this video. I have two Alibows on the way along with some 36" arrows, both bamboo and carbon, thanks to your great training and reviews. The advice given in this particular video was especially helpful regarding bow hand grip. It works perfectly and I am now hitting the target regularly and arrows are straight upon impact. I have used carbon arrows from 600 spine down to 400 in the same bow with the same performance. I would also like to state how this form of shooting has not only NOT negatively affected my regular Mediterranean split fingers style, but seems to have helped. I continuously go back to my hunting bow after each session of practice thumb release and have noted an actual improvement in my ability to concentrate and accuracy. I hope that you have a smooth transition to your new location and anxiously await your videos from there. Again, thank you.

Hi Armin, Thanks for all your great videos. Extremely helpful! Your videos inspired me to buy my first bow (Scythian from Flagella Dei based on your recommendation). I was wondering where you rest the string on your thumb. Is it on the thumb pad or in the first groove? Also, for heavier bows, do you change the way to hold the string? Thanks!

Good morning from Phoenix AZ, I watch your videos and have been practicing thumb release for two months now "also have only been practicing archery for the past two months" but in the past two weeks I have been causing blood blisters on my release thumb. Do you have any suggestions for what I might be doing wrong? I don't use thumb rings and they make me feel disconnected from the bow so I would prefer not too. Practicing or studying archery is a form of stress release for me and learning the traditional ways have been very positive "spiritually" for me. Thank you for sharing your experience and your knowledge with us.

Hi, Armin I live in an isolated place and when it comes to archery I am self taught. When I was a kid I used the pinch draw and shot off the right side of the bow being right handed and right eye dominate. When our school offered archery classes I was the first one to sign up. When I got to the class there was only the instructor there, and she said it was ok to shoot until the other kids got there. I was shooting tighter groups than the instructor, but of course I was doing it all wrong. Soon after a family friend broke my bow and replaced it with a much heavier bow. So I went from 18# to 45# I was about 10 or 11 yrs old and now I had to learn how to shoot all over again. I couldn't pull the heavy bow with the pinch technic. The new bow came with a finger tab for one finger over and two fingers under. The shooting instructor showed me the (correct way to shoot), on the left side of the bow and since my bow was too heavy she let me shoot hers for the class. I was just starting to get good with the new technic and for some reason they pulled the plug on the class. I had about three or four lessons and that was it. I taught myself a sort of half draw snap shooting technic, I got pretty good at it at short distances. Then as I grew I started hunting with a compound bow etc.etc. Now I feel like I am coming back full circle trying to learn thumb draw much like my pinch technic all over again. I wish I could see exactly what is happening when you twist the string when preforming Khatra. I understand the bow clearance of the arrow. But I cannot figure out what the string twist does. Do you think you could explain that in one of your videos and if you have already made a video explaining all that, could you direct me to it? Please? Luke.

Hi. Thanks for your story. Before you think of string twist, get your release crisp :) search in my videos for string twist, should pop up! Enjoy shooting

What kind of cruel sociopath would replace your 18# bow with a 45#??? Especially when you were just 11? Way to overcome!

Dear @Armin, thank you for this video, the push-pull is very good and creates natural kathra, especially when the bow snaps out the string out of the thumb from a relaxed wrist at full draw. This, somehow, I feel like the bow is "throwing" the arrow and can use the bow hand to "aim" towards the target. So for me, it is practice, practice, practice on this to be consistent. What do you think, did I get your message right, or did I miss anything? P.S. the string scratches my fore finger, is this normal?

I need some help. I am very new to archery and was wondering. What kind of bow would be a very good starter bow, also quite cheap if possible? (I am hoping to use it for both mediterranean and for thumb draw) I know used is an option, but that also requires a bow with the right specs to show up.

We use here the Snake Recurve (Arc Rolan) one piece polycarbonate. ambidextrous, draws more than 30". Perfect for a start and not very expensive

I'm also new in archery.Still practising which is more comfortable to shoot the arrow either using thumb or fingers..when wearing the finger cover it distracts my arrow release. So I shoot with bare thumbs or fingers. Need your advise. 😐

I've been using thumb lock (69) for about 4months now. Struggling with getting my arrows landing straight on the horizontal plane under 3 meters/yards. I definately cannot shoot through a frame, I will hit the sides of the frame. Armin, you told me that I should not force the lock and release, my lock is very loose now. Release is not forced too. I am using khatrah too which does help a bit. Please help?? Struggling for weeks now.

Also, I'm basically your student and train daily. Doing everything you teaching, even speedshooting. My thumbs dont need leather tabs anymore. I use side khatrah too, got my bow and draw shoulders sorted with your tutorial on that as well. Just straight arrows, hen landed in target, the arrows are at a 45degree to the right

I see. I watched 6:45 onwards and got the impression that the first 2 arrows without khatra knocking down the frame and pointing nock left. Maybe I need to view it again. Sorry for the mistake.

From the slow motion shots, it looks like the arrow has cleared the bow completely before the Khatra motion is initiated. Need faster frame rate to confirm.
@michaldante9797
@michaldante9797 3 года назад
I know it has been 5 months but maybe it will still be useful - hopefully to others too but I'm an amateur so don't take my words for granted. You are right, arrows clear the bow "kind of" before khatra is initiated visually. That's the way it is. But that doesn't mean at all that khatra is good for nothing. Evidence are large and bulletproof by many archers Armin included ! On the slower frame it may look like it have no effect, but it really have huge effect. You may test it by many ways and Armin tips here in video included, he have also another video where he describes particulary "string-twist" release and it goes hand in hand that not only by your eyes you can also evidence yourself by the noise of Arrow passing the bow with and without the touch/noise from bow handle. Traditional archery is art and it's useful to take science into it but it's still necessary to feel it, experience it by yourself. Science is also not 100% accurate and every research have it's own problematic things which comes into play. So my advice is to have open eyes like you have but also an open mind. Science is not straightforward bulletproof evidence particulary when things are more complex. But the experience of your feel and the result is evidence, if you then make a bad assumptions thats another thing. But your experience is a real thing and that is what we are trying to learn here from Armin - his experiences are very highly appreciated for reasons which are true. This is not critique to your comment or to you personally, it's just my opinion and advice which I hope will be to benefit you or/and others. In past I rellied on science heavily and it wasnt all bad, but doing the things by my own way and gaining more experiences gave me the push or even the edge above the earlier results. You can dip even deeper beyond things we are talking about here. Possibilities of learning from archery (form of art) are limitless and only to a point of limits by your mind, fortunately we can feel and experience by ourselves which help to develop our minds and characters thus our lives. Sorry for my bad english, hope it makes sense and keep living full-draw :-)

Dear Armin, I am trying to switch from the mediterranean to the thumb lock. I got a 53# bow. My arrow deflects far to the right and downwards. What could be the problem? Technique? Strong bow? etc. Besr regards!
@marnix786
@marnix786 7 лет назад
szmako I had the same issue when i first started thumb shooting. the issue is with aim/sighting. Once your brain and eyes start getting familiar to shooting from right side it should gradually move to centre. when I shoot recurve..arrows end up far left on target because im too use to aiming from right side

Another suggestion for someone who is changing over from finger shooting. Line the matin up with the line where your fingers join the hand. Then grip the bow with the bottom three fingers. as Armin suggests. Then clamp those fingers as hard as you can. Keep the tension up as you draw and release.
