ABOUT ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE: Archie and his partner, Murray buy the neighborhood bar and rechristen it “Archie's Place.” The Bunkers adopt their niece, Stephanie, but during the show's second season, Edith dies, leaving Archie to raise Stephanie, and, soon, another niece, with the help of a black housekeeper. Most of the action is set at the restaurant, with a cast of new characters including Anne Meara as the cook and Jason Wingreen as the bartender.

This episode marked a significant change of direction in ABP. Since Billie was older, they could do a broader range of stories with her. Denise Miller got a progressively larger role and Stephie's part on the show was drastically reduced.

@@davidsamuels9557 Yes, there were so many storylines left hanging, like Barney being unemployed, Harry being separated from his wife, Archie needing to find a new partner, etc. The fans deserved a real ending.

I love these! Tv is nothing but garbage anymore. I shut it off altogether 4 yrs ago. I love all the classics though! Before the snowflakes came along. Ever offended by everything.

Danielle Brisebois herself said that. Contrary to popular belief, there was no animosity or jealousy on her part toward Denise Miller ultimately overshadowing her in the show. She stated firmly how the character of Billie really helped the show.

@@nassauguy48 Danielle was a good sport publicly. Who knows how she felt privately. I think she was mislead by CoC who said in an Aug 81 interview with TV Guide he felt it was important for the show that the addition of Billie didn't come at the expense of Stephanie.

@@nassauguy48 I suspect Danielle was more hurt than she let on publicly which is why she never worked with CoC again. In a 1995 interview with Cardhouse, she was asked why she didn't thank CoC in the credits of her album. She responded that he didn't have anything to do with her music career, but she thanked others that also didn't and were far less influential in her life.

Probably they used different lighting for the house on this show because it was more somber now. And they didn't do live tapings anymore.

If I recall correctly, there was a reference to Maude having stayed in the room with Edith, as Archie was on the couch.

Yet, when Lionel stayed at the house (after he had an argument with his father), he slept on the couch. And when Maude stayed at the house, Archie slept on the couch. And when Edith wanted her cousin Estelle and her husband to stay at the house, Mike and Gloria said they would sleep on the rollaway bed in the living room. So confusing!

I can only assume it was because the extra lighting needed to film in front of a live studio audience was no longer used. Starting with Season 9 of AITF to cut production time, the live audience was dropped.

Once again, another inconsistency. When her father later visited for Christmas, Billie was angry at him for "abandoning" her mother and then marrying all those younger women. She finally found out that it was her mother who did the abandoning, and she became reconciled to her father.

@@nassauguy48 Yes, you are correct on that one. But what I was laughing about was how youth sees things though their eyes. Solidly in upper middle age, I think 2 years either way in age is a nothing. But to a young person, its like 10 or 15 years would be to US! LOL

Billie was a great character, but this marked an inconsistency in the show. During the AITF days, Archie's brother Fred, then unseen, was a model husband and father who was only married once, and had raised four children to adulthood. In fact, his daughter Linda (who theoretically was Billie's older sister) came to visit the Bunkers. In the later episodes. Fred had been married multiple times, and apparently only had one child, that being Billie.

Season 2 episode 4. Mrs. Canby was hired mainly to look after Stephanie while Uncle Arch was at the saloon. Ironically it was here when Billie came to live at 704 Hauser that made the need for an older housekeeper redundant and Mrs. Canby would be phased out later this season.

@@justmeiniowa Archie had prejudicial views, but was never a hateful bigot. Remember, he had the Jeffersons, especially Lionel, constantly in and out of his house. He even let Lionel stay over after Lionel had a falling out with his father.

@@robertpreston2220 Yep Arch interviewed several candidates and Mrs. Canby was the only one that would take the job because she was a relative of Archie's black neighbors. Sadly she as many other ABP characters were used a lot at first, then disappeared like the black neighbors, Amy Bloom and her father, Dotty, Roger the Accountant, etc. I guess it could be implied that as Stephanie got older and Billie moved in, the role of housekeeper became redundant. In fact after Billie arrived it seemed like they really didn't know what to do with Stephie. There wasn't enough storyline for both and of the two, Billie's age made her better suited for a show centered around a saloon.

Well, Archie was mellower because he was no longer working at that loading dock and had become a businessman. That was going to change him, of course, in some ways.
